In this paper, the Flow Control Fin(FCF) optimization has been carried out using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) techniques. This study focused on evaluation for the performance of the FCF attached in the stern part of the ship. The main advantage of FCF is to enhance the resistance performance through the lift generation with a forward force component on the foil section, and the propulsive performance by the uniformity of velocity distribution on the propeller plane. This study intended to evaluate these functions and to find optimized FCF form for minimizing viscous resistance and equalizing wake distribution. Four parameters of FCF are used in the study, which were angle and position of FCF, longitudinal location, transverse location, and span length in the optimization process. KRISO 300K VLCC2(KVLCC2) was chosen for an example ship to demonstrate FCF for optimization. The optimization procedure utilized genetic algorithms (GAs), a gradient-based optimizer for the refinement of the solution, and Non-dominated Sorting GA-II(NSGA-II) for Multiobjective Optimization. The results showed that the optimized FCF could enhance the uniformity of wake distribution at the expense of viscous resistance.
The prediction of the total resistance of a ship is generally based on considering it to be a simple sum of the viscous resistance and the wave resistance. An experimental approach for predicting full-size ship resistance on this basis is practical but obviously has the deficiency that a model has to be built for each prototype of interest and the resulting tank tests are time consuming. On the other hand, purely theoretical calculations of the wave resistance, using, for example, the Michell theory, require relatively little computer time and give an excellent portrayal of the overall variation of the vessel resistance as a function of forward speed. Unfortunately, there are sufficient differences between this theory and the measured results to make this method impractical for design purposes. The proposal examined here is to use a data bank of experimental resistance results to modify the theoretical predictions. It is demonstrated that the technique will produce remarkably accurate resistance predictions and can take into account the effects of the water depth, any restriction of canal or river width, as well as the prismatic coefficient, and other geometric parameters.
This paper deals with the added resistance of a ship in waves using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The ship added resistance is one of the key considerations in the design of energy-efficient ship. In this study, the added resistance of a LNG carrier in head waves is computed using a CFD code to consider the nonlinearity and the viscous effects. The unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation (RANS) is numerically solved and the volume of fluid (VOF) approach is used to simulate the free surface flows. The length of incident wave varies from half the ship length to twice the ship length. To investigate the nonlinearity effect, both the linear wave condition and the nonlinear wave condition are considered. The heave and pitch motions are calculated along with the added resistance, and the wave contours are obtained. Grid convergence test is conducted thoroughly to achieve the converged motion and resistance values. The calculated results are compared and validated with experimental data.
Borosilicate, $B_2O_3$ and BN derived from liquid precursors have been tested as shielding materials for the long period of oxidation resistance of C/BN composites at $650^{\circ}C$. Borosilicate coating displayed excellent oxidation resistance and low moisture absorbance, while $B_2O_3$ and BN were less effective in elevating the oxidation resistance. The enhancement of the oxidation resistance was explained as self-healing effect by viscous flow of the borosilicate glass over Tg, resulting in the reduction of the exposed carbon fibers in a BN matrix.
In this paper, wake equalizing duct (WED) form optimization was carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. A WED is a ring-shaped flow vane with a foil-type cross-section fitted to a hull in front of the upper propeller area. The main advantage of a WED is the power savings resulting from the uniformity of the velocity distribution on the propeller plane, a reduction in the flow separation at the aft-body, and lift generation with a forward force component on the foil section. This paper intends to evaluate these functions and find an optimized WED form for minimizing the viscous resistance and equalizing the wake distribution. In the optimization process, the study uses four WED parameters: the angle of the section, longitudinal location, and angles of the axes for the half rings against the longitudinal and transverse planes of the ship. KRISO 300K VLCC2 (KVLCC2) is chosen as an example ship to demonstrate the WED optimization. The optimization procedure uses genetic algorithms (GAs), a gradient-based optimizer for the refinement of the solution, and Non-dominated Sorting GA-II(NSGA-II) for Multiobjective Optimization. The results show that the optimized WED can reduce the viscous resistance at the expense of the uniformity of the wake distribution.

This paper deploys optimization techniques to obtain the optimum hull form of KSUEZMAX at the conditions of full-load draft and design speed. The processes have been carried out using a RaPID-HOP program. The bow and the stern hull-forms are optimized separately without altering neither, and the resulting versions of the two are then combined. Objective functions are the minimum values of wave-making and viscous pressure resistance coefficients for the bow and stern. Parametric modification functions for the bow hull-form variation are SAC shape, section shape (U-V type, DLWL type), bulb shape (bulb height and size); and those for the stern are SAC and section shape (U-V type, DLWL type). WAVIS version 1.3 code is used for the potential and the viscous-flow solver. Prior to the optimization, a parametric study has been conducted to observe the effects of design parameters on the objective functions. SQP has been applied for the optimization algorithm. The model tests have been conducted at a towing tank to evaluate the resistance performance of the optimized hull-form. It has been noted that the optimized hull-form brings 2.4% and 6.8% reduction in total and residual resistance coefficients compared to those of the original hull-form. The propulsive efficiency increases by 2.0% and the delivered power is reduced 3.7%, whereas the propeller rotating speed increases slightly by 0.41 rpm.
This paper focuses on the effects of the changes in the resistance characteristics caused by the changes of the POD shape installed in the Hydrofoil vessel, using the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). We input the POD sections' basic shape as the origin of the x and y axis. Then as we cut the x-axis 0 to 2 cm, and the more we cut it, the total resistance value had increased. However, we have recognized the fact that as we cut the POD section, 3 to 5 cm, the resistance value had rather decreased. Furthermore we found out the result that as the cut partition was larger; the POD cross-section would decrease, resulting in the linear decrease of the viscous force.
The present work develops a method of evaluating thrust deduction and wake for different loads of the propeller using the concerted application of the theoretical tools and experimental techniques. It also shows the applicability of the new method to the design of optimum hull form. Firstly, the problem of hull-propeller interaction was analyzed in terms of inviscid as well as viscous components of the thrust deduction and wake. The wavemaking resistance of a hull and propeller were mathematically represented by sources on the hull surface and sink on the propeller plane, respectively. The strength of sink was determined by utilizing the radial distributions of propeller load and nominal wake. The resistance increment due to a propeller and the axial perturbation flow induced by the hull in the propeller plane were calculated. Especially, the inviscid component of the thrust deduction was calculated by subtraction the wavemaking resistance of a bare hull, the wavemaking resistance of a free-running propeller and the augmentation of propeller resistance due to hull action from the wavemaking resistance of the hull with a propeller. The viscous components of the thrust deduction and wake were estimated as functions of propeller load which were established by the propeller load varying test after deduction the calculated inviscid components. Secondly, an analysis method of powering performance was developed based on the potential theory and the propeller load varying test. The hybrid method estimates the thrust deduction, wake and propeller open-water efficiency for different propeller load. This method can be utilized in the analysis of powering performance for the propeller load variation such as the added resistance due to hull surface roughness, the added resistance due to wind, etc. Finally, the hybrid method was applied to the optimum design of hull form. A series of afterbody shapes was obtained by systematically varying the waterplane and section shapes of a parent afterbody without changing the principal dimensions, block coefficient and prismatic coefficient. From the comparison of the predicted results such as wavemaking resistance, thrust deduction, wake and delivered power, an optimum hull form was obtained. The delivered power of the optimized hull form was reduced by 5.7% which was confirmed by model tests. Also the predicted delivered power by the hybrid method shows fairly good agreement with the test result. It is therefore considered that the new analysis method of powering performance can be utilized as a practical tool for the design of optimum hull form as for the analysis of powering performance for the propeller load variation in the preliminary design stage.
A three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes code based on the third derivative upwind is employed to simulate the flow around the underwater vehicle advancing on the calm water. Computations are carried out in the range of Froude numbers 0.4 to 0.7. The wave resistance, lift, moment and the pressure distribution on the body are calculated. Computations are performed in a rectangular grid system based on the Marker & Cell method. For validation, computation results are compared with existing experimental results.
At the running speed higher than 250 km/h, several aerodynamic problems such as the increase of aerodynamic resistance, aerodynamic noise, pressure fluctuation at the tunnel entry, impulsive wave at the tunnel exit bring about the power consumption, deterioration of riding quality, and severe environmental noise. To solve these aerodynamic problems, the flow phenomena around the high speed train have to be analyzed in detail. In this study, the flow around the train is modelled as the 2-dimensional viscous compressible flow and the flow field is calculated numerically for the three different types of geometry and running speed. The aerodynamic drag coefficient and the pressure coefficient are evaluated each case.
