  • Calculation was carried out for phase velocity and deformation wave decay in a layer of viscoelastic material fixed tightly on the solid substrate. Analysis has been performed regarding the inner structure of the wave, i.e., the proportions between the vertical and horizontal displacements and their profiles. The wave characteristics depend strongly on media compressibility factor. The effect of viscous losses on parameters of the main oscillation mode was studied in detail. Results were compared with the model of coating with local deformation. A new experimental approach was made in order to measure such wave properties of a compliant coating as the dependency of deformation wave velocity on frequency and decay factor was made. The method for estimation of coating parameters enabling the drag reduction in turbulent flow was then refined.

  • In this paper, the integration issue, such as an air-side integration design between the gas turbine and air separation unit, is described and analyzed by the exergy and energy balance of the combined-cycle power block in an IGCC power plant. The results showed that the net power of the system was almost same, but that of the gas turbine was decreased as the integration degree increased. The highest exergy loss was occurred in the combustor of gas turbine, which was affected by the chemical reaction, heat conduction, mass diffusion, and viscous dissipation.

  • A commercial CFD code is used to compute the 3-D viscous flow field within the inlet flow concentrator of the newly developed AHU(Air Handling Unit). To improve the performance of the AHU, the inlet air needs to be gradually accelerated to the fan's annular velocity without causing turbulence or flow separation. Three major geometric parameters were selected to specify the inlet shape of the AHU. Several numerical calculations are carried out to determine the influence of the geometric parameters on the performance of the AHU. The performance of the AHU could be measured by the inlet and outlet flow uniformity and the total pressure loss through the inlet flow concentrator. The optimized nondimensionalized velocity profile through the inlet flow concentrator were used for the design of the AHU with the various volume flow rates.

  • Polystyrene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (PS/MWCNT) composites were prepared by the use of latex technology. The monodisperse PS latex was synthesized by an emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization from styrene/potassium persulfate/water system in the presence of ethanol. The MWCNTs were first treated with acid mixture to eliminate impurities, dispersed in deionized water driven by ultrasonicator, and then mixed with the PS latex. From these mixtures, PS/MWCNT composites were prepared by freeze-drying and subsequent compression molding. In the small-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments, both complex viscosity and storage modulus increased with increasing MWCNT content. A pronounced effect of MWCNT content was observed, resulting in larger storage modulus and stronger yield behavior at low frequencies when compared to unmodified PS. It showed a transition from viscous to elastic behavior with increasing MWCNT content. Over the MWCNT content of 3 wt%, the storage modulus was higher than the loss modulus across all frequencies.

  • Lip seals, important components in many hydraulic devices, dissipate energy through friction, resulting in power loss. This study contributes to an understanding of lip seal friction by further exploring the connections between friction behavior, viscoelastic properties of robber and viscous properties of the lubricant. Experiments haven been conducted for short stroke oscillations, where these connections are quite strong. Sliding friction experiments at a variety of pressures, temperatures and oscillation rates (for different seal materials, surface roughnesses and lubricant viscosities) are examined. Speculative explanations are suggested for conditions under which friction maxima and frictional vibrations occur.

  • Pressure and temperature in the cavity of injection molding have been investigated. Special injection mold was designed to install pressure and temperature sensors. The sensors were supplied by KISTLER and the pressure and temperature were measured for various operational conditions, such as injection pressure, holding pressure, cooling time, mold temperature, and injection temperature. As injection pressure increased cavity pressure and temperature increase. There were no big differences in temperatures according to the holding pressures. As mold temperature increased pressure and temperature in the cavity increase. The flowability of resin increases as mold temperature increases subsequently the pressure in the cavity increases since the pressure loss is less in the low viscous medium than high ciscous medium. The cavity temperature highly depends upon mold temperature.

  • Foil gas bearing is a noncontact bearing operated by coupled interaction between hydrodynamic pressure of viscous fluid and elastic deformation of foil structure. It has valuable advantages, such as low power loss, long life, oilless environment and low vibration, over conventional bearings for the high speed applications. A high speed BLDC motor adopting the foil bearing has been developed. It is designed to have 38㎾ power at 100,000 RPM for a cryogenic cooler whose operating fluid is neon. In this paper, structural development details especially for the foil gas bearing and rotordynamics are presented.

  • Steady state flow calculations are conducted for the newly-designed turbo-pump inducers to validate the performance of Tascflow code. Hydrodynamic performance is evaluated, and structures of the passage flow and leading edge recirculation are also investigated. The calculated results show good coincidence with the experimental data of the static pressure performance and velocity profiles near the leading edge. Upstream recirculation, tip leakage and vortex flow at the blade tip and near leading edge are main sources of pressure losses. Amount of pressure losses from the upstream to the leading edge corresponds to that of pressure losses through the whole blade. The total viscous losses are considerably large due to the strong secondary flow.

  • Single phase pressure drops in micro tubes were investigated through an experimental measurement and a numerical simulation. Experimental Po was obtained in circular micro tubes with 87 and $118{\mu}m$ diameter with distilled water. Experiments were carried out in laminar flow region with varying the Re 15-450 for the $87{\mu}m$ diameter tubes and 60-1300 for the $118{\mu}m$ diameter tube. No early transition from laminar to turbulent flow was detected for the experimental range. The computational estimation of pressure drop in the $87{\mu}m$ diameter tube was performed with the aid of CFD software. Boundary conditions from experiments were used for the numerical simulation. The results of experimental and numerical studies showed a good agreement with the conventional macro theory.

  • Binary systems of a white dwarf showing mass transfer activities are classified into cataclysmic variables and symbiotic stars. In the case of cataclysmic variables, the companion is usually a late type main sequence star filling its Roche lobe, where material is transferred through the inner Lagrangian point to form an accretion disk around the white dwarf. The disk becomes unstable and highly viscous when the surface density exceeds the critical density, leading to dwarf nova outbursts. In contrast, symbiotic stars are wide binary systems having a giant as the mass donor. Some fraction of giant stellar wind is accreted to the white dwarf giving rise to various symbiotic activities. In particular, half of symbiotics show Raman O VI at 6830 and 7088, which are important spectroscopic probe of mass transfer process. Monitoring observations using 1 m class telescopes will produce valuable information regarding the mass loss and mass transfer to white dwarf stars, shedding much light on the last stage of stellar evolution of low and intermediate mass stars.
