  • Effect of lubricants on the rheological and thermal properties of poly(butylene terephthalate) [PBT] were investigated. Calcium stearate and adipic acid glycol polyester (AhGP) were used as processing lubricants for PBT. Decrease of melt viscosity was accomplished by the addition of 1 wt% of lubricants. It was understood that melt viscosity was affected by the enhancement of chain mobility of PBT with AhGP as an internal lubricant as well as the lubricity on processing equipment developed by calcium stearate as an external lubricant. Lubricants also influenced chain scission of PBT which caused the viscosity drop as well. In addition, lubricant is resulted in the lowering of thermal stability, however, this might be minimized by adding less than 3 wt% of calcium stearate as a lubricant. As a consequence, calcium stearate as an external lubricant is more effective to control the melt viscosity of PBT with minimizing of chain scission and thermal instability in PBT.

  • An aim of this study is to study the correlation between rheological properties and sedimentation of capsules in aqueous polymer solution with low viscosity. Rheological properties of aqueous polymer solutions were controlled by carbomer (C), acylate/C10-30 alkyl acylate crosspolymer (AC), and ammonium acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP copolymer (AV). Small amount of polymer C solution had the highest viscosity and yield stress of polymer AV solution was higher than that of polymer C solution in the same viscosity when the concentration of polymer AV exceeded $0.35 wt\%$. Each aqueous polymer solution was tested and the results showed that as viscosity and yield stress increased, the sedimentation ratio of capsules decreased. The viscoelasticity data also showed the same tendency in a shear stress range of 0.1 to 2.0 Pa. These results demonstrated that the rheological properties of polymer solutions had a strong correlation with the sedimentation of capsules. When polymer I and AV were used, there was a synergistic effect and the correlation between rheological properties and sedimentation of capsules was very complicated. It was assumed that the characteristics of polymer structure and interaction between polymers caused this phenomena.

  • Bentonite-based grout has been widely used to seal a borehole constructed for a closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger in a geothermal heat pump system (GHP) because of its high swelling potential and low hydraulic conductivity. Three types of bentonites were compared one another in terms of viscosity and thermal conductivity in this paper. The viscosity and thermal conductivity of the grouts with bentonite contents of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by weight were examined to take into account a variable water content of bentonite grout depending on field conditions. To evaluate the effect of salinity (i.e., concentration of NaCl : 0.1M, 0.25M, and 0.5M) on swelling potential of the bentonite-based grouts, a series of volume reduction tests were performed. In addition, if the viscosity of bentonite-water mixture is relatively low, particle segregation can occur. To examine the segregation phenomenon, the degree of segregation has been evaluated for the bentonite grouts especially in case of relatively low viscosity. From the experimental results, it is found that (1) the viscosity of the bentonite mixture increased with time and/or with increasing the mixing ratio. However, the thermal conductivity of the bentonite mixture did not increase with time but increased with increasing the mixing ratio; (2) If bentonite grout has a relatively high swelling index, the volume reduction ratio in the saline condition will be low; (3) The additive, such as a silica sand, can settle down on the bottom of the borehole if the bentonite has a very low viscosity. Consequently, the thermal conductivity of the upper portion of the ground heat exchanger will be much smaller than that of the lower portion.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between steady shear flow (nonlinear behavior) and dynamic viscoelastic (linear behavior) properties for concentrated polymer solutions. Using both an Advanced Rheometic Expansion System(ARES) and a Rheometics Fluids Spectrometer (RFS II), the steady shear flow viscosity and the dynamic viscoelastic properties of concentrated poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO), polyisobutylene(PIB), and polyacrylamide(PAAm) solutions have been measured over a wide range of shear rates and angular frequencies. The validity of some previously proposed relationships was compared with experimentally measured data. In addition, the effect of solution concentration on the applicability of the Cox-Merz rule was examined by comparing the steady flow viscosity and the magnitude of the complex viscosity Finally, the applicability of the Cox-Merz rule was theoretically discussed by introducing a nonlinear strain measure. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) Among the previously proposed relationships dealt with in this study, the Cox-Merz rule implying the equivalence between the steady flow viscosity and the magnitude of the complex viscosity has the best validity. (2) For polymer solutions with relatively lower concentration, the steady flow viscosity is higher than the complex viscosity. However, such a relation between the two viscosities is reversed for highly concentrated polymer solutions. (3) A nonlinear strain measure is decreased with increasing stran magnitude, after reaching the maximum value in small strain range. This behavior is different from the theoretical prediction demonstrating the shape of a damped oscillatory function. (4) The applicability of the Cox-Merz rule is influenced by the $\beta$ value, which indicates the slope of a nonlinear stain measure (namely, the degree of nonlinearity) at large shear deformations. The Cox-Merz rule shows better applicability as the $\beta$ value becomes smaller.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with multiple enzymes composed of phytase plus carbohydrolases (ROVABIO$^{(R)}$ Max, RM) on growth performance, nutritional availability and intestinal viscosity in broiler chicks. A total of one thousand, one-day-old male broiler chicks were randomly allotted into treatment groups that received one of five experimental diets for 32 days. Each group consisted of 40 birds and all experiments included five replicates. The dietary treatments included PC (a positive control diet), NC1 (65 kcal/kg, 0.15% and 0.10% less ME, available phosphorus and calcium levels, respectively, than the PC diet), NC2 (85 kcal/kg, 0.20% and 0.10% less ME, available phosphorus and calcium levels, respectively, than the PC diet), NC1+RM (NC1 plus ROVABIO$^{(R)}$ Max) and NC2+RM (NC2 plus ROVABIO$^{(R)}$ Max). The average body weights, daily body weight gains and feed conversion rates of the chicks fed a diet containing RM improved significantly or tended to improve. The treatments also had no effect on the carcass characteristics or blood parameters, but the viscosity of the intestinal contents of the chicks fed the diet containing RM was significantly lower than that of chicks in the NC without RM groups. Additionally, chicks fed the dietary RM showed increased breaking strength and ash content of the tibia when compared to chicks that received the non-RM diets. Taken together, the results of the present study indicated that the addition of multiple enzymes consisting of phytase plus NSP enzymes improved the growth performance and mineral status of the tibia in broiler chickens fed corn-wheat-soybean meal-based diets with reduced levels of nutrients. Further, these findings suggest that the improved animal performance is associated with reduced intestinal viscosity by the dietary enzyme complex.

  • Rape-seed oil has high viscosity and high rubber content like other vegetable oils. When crude rape-seed oil obtained by a general oil extraction process is used in a diesel engine, automization condition during injection is not good and a large amount of combustion product is doposited in a combustion chamber. The improvement of a diesel engine is required to use rape-seed oil as a diesel engine fuel. In this study, the physical and chemical properties and combustion characteristics of rape-seed oil were investigated. The auxiliary aid was developed to improve automization condition and the effect of the auxiliary injection aid on the performance of a diesel engine was determined. The results are as follows. 1) Oil content of rape-seed is 45%. The exraction rate is 33%. The resuls show higher values compared to those of other vegetable oils. 2) The viscosity of rape-seed oil is 50.8 cSt and nearly 14 times of diesel oil viscosity. 3) The heating value and flash point of rape-seed oil are 9720kcal/Kg and 318$^{\circ}C$, respectively. 4) In case rape-seed oil is used as fuel, brake horse power, specific fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency are compared to those of diesel oil. The results of rape-seed oil show 3.6%, 12.7% and 3.1% higher values. 5) Particle size of injection fuel with the auxiliary injection aid on the performance of a diesel engine was determined. The results are as follows. 1) Oil content of rape-seed is 45%. The extraction rate is 33%. The results show higher values compared to those of other vegetable oils. 2) The viscosity of rape-seed oil is 50.8 cSt and nearly 14 times of diesel oil viscosity. 3) The heating value and flash point of rape-seed oil are 9720kcal/Kg and 318.deg.C, respectively. 4) In case rape-seed oil is used as fuel, brake horse power, specific fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency are compared to theose of diesel oil. The results of rape-seed oil show 3.6%, 12.7% and 3.1% higher values. 5) Particle size of injection fuel with the auxiliary injection aids is 100.mu.m smaller than that od injection fuel without the aid. 6) Brake horse power and brake thermal efficiency with the auxiliary injection aid increase 5.07% and 6.07%, respectively. However, specific fuel consumption decreases 3.85% with the auxiliary injection aid.

  • Characteristics of rubber mixture were evaluated in order to find the optimum mixing conditions of compounds containing silica and silane at various temperatures. With different mixing temperatures of 105, 120, 130, 140 and $160^{\circ}C$, the viscosity of the compound mixed at $105^{\circ}C$ showed a very high viscosity value. Compounds mixed the temperature range from at $120^{\circ}C$ to $140^{\circ}C$ showed lower viscosity than the compound mixed at $105^{\circ}C$. However, the difference was found to be small in those temperature ranges. On the contrary, at the mixing temperature of $160^{\circ}C$, the viscosity of compound increased again. Through the physical and dynamic observations, it was verified that at the mixing temperature below $120^{\circ}C$ only insufficient silica-silane reaction has been obtained. In addition, with the elevated mixing temperature of $160^{\circ}C$, Cross-linking occurred during mixing by the sulfur contained in coupling agent. In the temperature ranges from $120^{\circ}C$ to $140^{\circ}C$, because of the fast coupling reaction at higher temperature, it was thought to be more advantageous during reaction even though the trend of viscosity and dynamic mechanical property was not clear.

  • Production of a high viscosity exoploysaccharide, methylan, by Methylobacterium organophilum from methanol was carried out in fed-batch cultures and the rheological properties of methylan fermentation broth were studied. Bacterial biomass showed little influence on viscosity, but the accumulation of methylan caused the increase of viscosity. With proceeding fermention, the viscosity at the same concentration of methylan was significantly increased and methylan solution showed slightly higher pseudoplasticity. The composition changes of methylan were investigated at various fermentation times. Contents of total sugar, reducing sugar and methylan were decreased but contents of acids(pyruvic acid, uronic acid and acetic acid) were increased with the culture time. It was considered that the increased content of acids resulted in the increase of the hyrodynamic domain in the solution due to charge repulsion. Consequently, the solution viscosity increased in propotion to the acids contents of methylan. Cell growth and methylan production were severely decreased by the limitation of dissolved oxygen. However, the cellular activity for methylan production was almost constant regardless of the level of dissolved oxygen. As a result, the high speed of agitation increased the methylan production, the specific production rate of methylan, and the methylan yield of the cell.

  • Thermoplastic starch (TPS) was prepared by mixing starch with glycerol as a plasticizer. The glycerol content ranged from 20 to 35 wt. % and TPS was prepared in a twin screw extruder. The shear viscosity, thermal and mechanical properties of the TPS were investigated. The viscosity of TPS exhibited typical shear thinning behavior: decreasing viscosity with increasing shear rate. The power index, n, increased with increasing glycerol content. This is because as the content of glycerol, a Newtonian fluid, increases, the viscosity behavior of the TPS becomes closer to that of a Newtonian fluid. The thermal behavior of TPS showed that starch and glycerol are miscible. In addition, when TPS was aged for more than one day at room temperature, TPS showed a partially miscible phase structure. The moisture absorbed into the TPS was assumed to change the phase behavior. The mechanical properties of TPS were found to be strongly dependent on the content of the plasticizer. Both the toughness and stiffness increased with increasing plasticizer content. DSC showed that this unusual result was due to the combined effect of humidity and the high amylose content in starch.

  • The circulatory system is closely related to the inter-relationship between the anatomy of the heart and blood vessels, and the fluid dynamic properties of blood. The physical properties of blood, which affect blood flow, are called hemorheologic factors. Hemorheologic factors, such as blood viscosity and erythrocyte aggregation, are influenced mainly by hematocrit. A higher hematocrit level results in an increase in blood viscosity, erythrocyte aggregation, which impedes the circulation itself, and tissue oxygenation. An excess of serum ferritin causes injury to vascular endothelial cells and erythrocytes via oxygen free radicals. In addition, an excess of blood can aggravatee the adverse effects of the hemorheologic parameters and induce atherogenesis, microcirculatory disturbances, and major cardiovascular events. A preventive and therapeutic approach with a phlebotomy or blood donation has been stimulated by the knowledge that blood loss, such as regular donations, is associated with significant decreases in key hemorheologic variables, including blood viscosity, erythrocyte aggregation, hematocrit, and fibrinogen. Major cardiovascular events have been improved in regular blood donors by improving blood flow and microcirculation by decreasing the level of oxidative stress, improving the hemorheologic parameters, and reducing the serum ferritin level. Confirmation of the positive preventive and therapeutic effects of blood donations on cardiovascular disease by a well-designed and well-controlled Cohort study may be good news to patients with cardiovascular disease or at risk of these diseases, as well as patients who require a transfusion.
