In our fast-moving information and knowledge society, skills and know-how rapidly become outdated. Virtual learning environments play a key role in meeting today's growing demand for customized educational and vocational training and lift-long teaming. The scope of multimedia-based and web-supported education is illustrated by means of an interdisciplinary multimedia project 'New Statistics' funded by the German government. The project output contains more than 70 learning modules covering the complete curriculum of an introductory statistics course. All modules are based on a statistical laboratory and on a multitude of Java applets, animations and case studies. The paper focuses on presenting the statistical laboratory and the applets. These components present the main project pillars and are particularly suitable for international use, independently from the original project framework. This article also demonstrates the application of Java applets and other multimedia developments from the educational world to official statistics for interactive presentation of statistical information.

In this paper we present an overview of existing state of the art visualization techniques fur the interactive analysis of results from numerical simulations and measurements. We describe the basic concepts and key ideas behind these different visualization methods in this paper. The potential of these techniques for an efficient integration into a virtual reality environment will be investigated. Furthermore we present our first demonstrator fur visualizing multiparametric data and give an outlook on our plans for further exploiting and developing these techniques in an upcoming project.

This paper proposes a cost-effective solution to the synonym problem of virtual caches. In the proposed solution, a minimal hardware addition guarantees the correctness whereas the software counterpart helps improve the performance. The key to this proposed solution is an addition of a small physically-indexed cache called U-cache. The U-cache maintains the reverse translation information of the cache blocks that belong to unaligned virtual pages only, where aligned measns that the lower bits of the virtual page number match those of the corresponding physical page number. The page alignment is a simple software optimization to improve the performance of the U-cche hardware. With the combination of both hardware and software, the proposed solution reduces the hardware costs and minimizes software modification and performance degradation. Performance evaluation base on ATUM traces shows that a U-cache, with only a few entries, performs almost as well as fully-configured hardware-based solution when more than 95% of the pages are aligned.

Earliest virtual deadline zero laxity (EVDZL) algorithm is proposed for mobile GPU schedulers for its improved responsiveness. Responsiveness of user interface (UI) is one of the key factors in evaluating smart devices because of its significant impacts on user experiences. However, conventional GPU schedulers based on completely fair scheduling (CFS) shows a poor responsiveness due to its algorithmic complexity. In this letter, we present the EVDZL scheduler based on the conventional earliest deadline zero laxity (EDZL) algorithm by accommodating the virtual laxity concept into the scheduling. Experimental results show that the EVDZL scheduler improves the response time of the Android UI by 9.6% compared with the traditional CFS scheduler.

Researches on three-dimensional multimedia has been performed actively in recent years. Virtual sound technology corresponding to virtual image should be provided to implement 3D multimedia with high quality. Head-related transfer function (HRTF) plays a key role in this research area. HRTFs measured in changing azimuth, elevation, and distance for each and every subject is necessary for ideal solution. However, it is practically impossible to measure all subjects' HRTFs, so various HRTF databases have been built by many researchers. Because HRTF displays quite different aspects from subject to subject, HRTF of dummy head has been used for generic usage. However, mannequin's HRTF showed much worse performance comparing with individual case so this solution should be improved. From previous work, standardization of HRTF based on tensor-singular value decomposition method has been proposed. For effective extraction of standard HRTF, three different decomposition methods are compared in this paper.

In this paper we have compared three materials which are used for background chromakey in virtual studio. Each material reflects the illumination in different ways. In our experimental comparison, the 'chromatte' have the best quality in making good background image. Without predetermined light condition, chromatte provides wide range of adaptability.

Interactive art is an art form that closely links art creators and art participants. It has been doomed with advanced technology from the very beginning. Virtual Reality is a technology which born in the background of the maturity of computer technology. Its birth has brought immeasurable possibilities for interactive art, especially the interactivity and multi-sensory experience. This paper discusses the current development status of interactive art in the field of interactive art through the characteristics of virtual reality technology and the future development of this technology will bring to interactive art.

We propose a method to analyze user requirements to design a virtual reality-based risk management system. This paper presents surveys, interviews, prototype evaluation methods, and implementation process. Architectural heritage is easily exposed to natural and artificial dangers caused by various material combinations and structural features. So, risk management of cultural heritage plays a key role in preserving and managing cultural heritage. However, risk management has been carried out through empirical methods using distributed data. This study analyzes user requirements for designing functions and interfaces of VR-based risk management system and evaluates prototypes to overcome the above problems. As a result, most heritage managers wanted a system function to support risk analysis and response. They also found that they prefer 2D information such as existing drawings and photos rather than 3D information. The results of the user requirements analysis derived from this study will be used to create risk management applications.
This paper introduces a virtual signal injected maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control strategy for direct-torque-controlled five-phase interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. The key of the proposed method is that a high frequency signal is injected virtually into the stator flux linkage. Then the responding stator current is calculated and regulated to compensate the amplitude of the flux linkage. This is done according to the relationship between the stator current and the stator flux linkage. Since the proposed method does not inject any real signals into the motor, it does not cause any of the problems associated with high-frequency signals, such as additional copper loss and extra torque ripple. Simulation and experimental results are offered to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The Republic of Korea (ROK) Army is developing the Army Synthetic Battlefield Training System and plans divisional-level Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) integrated training. This study proposes a plan to apply VR/AR/MR (Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality/Mixed Reality) technology to LVC integrated training systems to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of future LVC integrated training. The study investigated immersive military training systems in the ROK and advanced countries. As a result, we confirm that immersive technology can significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of military training. Accordingly, we review the key technologies required for building a defense training system with immersive features and propose training subjects that can be enhanced in effectiveness and efficiency when built with an immersive approach. We also propose a plan to apply immersive technology to the Live, Virtual, and Constructive systems for the development of future LVC integrated training system.
