With the recent development of virtual reality, it has been actively investigated to develop user interfaces for immersive interaction. Immersive user interfaces improve the efficiency and the capability of information processing in the virtual environment providing various services, and provide effective interaction in the field of ubiquitous and mobile computing. In this paper, we propose an virtual reality platform "My Workspace" which renders an 3D virtual workspace by using an immersive user interface. We develop an interface that integrates an optical see-through head-mounted display, a Wii remote controller, and a helmet with infrared LEDs. It estimates the user's gaze direction in terms of horizontal and vertical angles based on the model of head movements. My Workspace expands the current 2D workspace based on monitors into the layered 3D workspace, and renders a part of 3D virtual workspace corresponding to the gaze direction. The user can arrange various tasks on the virtual workspace and switch each task by moving his head. In this paper, we will also verify the performance of the immersive user interface as well as its usefulness with the usability test.
To generate workspace analytically using the robot kinematics, data on range of human joints motion, especially range of two degrees of freedom motion, are needed. However, these data have not been investigated up to now. Therefore, in this research, we are to investigate an interaction effect of motions with two degrees of freedom occurred simultaneously at the shoulder, virtual hip(L5/S1) and hip joints, respectively, for 47 young male students. When motion with two degrees of freedom occurred at a joint such as shoulder, virtual hip and hip joints, it was found from the results of ANOVA that the action of a degree of freedom motion may either decrease or increase the effective functioning of the other degree of freedom motion. In other words, the shoulder flexion was decreased as the shoulder was adducted or abducted to $60^{\circ}C$TEX>or abducted from $60^{\circ}C$TEX>to maximum degree of abduction, while the shoulder flexion increased as the joint was abducted from $60^{\circ}C$TEX> to $60^{\circ}C$TEX> The flexion was decreased as the virtual hip was bent laterally at the virtual hip joint, and also did as the hip was adducted or abducted from the neutral position. It is expected that workspace can be generated more precisely based the data on the range of two degrees of joint motion measured in this study.

In this paper, we determine the design criteria of haptic device considering the human haptic system and determine the design specifications. We developed a new 2DOF haptic device based on the specifications. It has the wide workspace, statically-balanced, constant inertia matrix, well-conditioned Jacobian matrix and so on. There also is not singularity point within workspace of the device. We show that it has better performance than other 2DOF haptic device in the many aspects.

Rapid social change in economy, society and information technology takes the initiative of changing office formation. It also requires new change in workspace function for the office workers. This research is about the change of office formation chronologically according to the change in economy, society and cultural diversity. The study also shows the directions for the workspace design considering the new demand and flow of the new office formation. Mobile Office, Virtual Office and Moduler Office are the new office formation. Also, the new workspace requires the common space where the workers can communicate diversely and share their knowledge and ideas, enhancing collaboration and productivity of the new workspace.
The process equipment for handling high level radioactive materials like spent fuels is operated in a hot cell, due to high radioactivity. Thus, this equipment should be maintained and repaired optimally by a remotely operated manipulator. The master-slave manipulators(MSM) are widely used as a remote handling device in the hot cell. The equipment in the hot cell should be optimally placed within the workspace of the wall-mounted slave manipulator for the maintenance operation. But, because of the complexity in the hot cell, there would be some parts of the equipment that are not reached by the MSM. In this study, the maintenance process for these parts of the equipment is developed using virtual prototyping technology. To analyze the workspace of the maintenance device in the hot cell and to develop the maintenance processes for the process equipment, the virtual mock-up of the hot cell for the spent fuel handling process is implemented using IGRIP. For the implementation of the virtual mock-up, the parts of the equipment and maintenance devices such as the MSM and servo manipulator are modeled and assembled in 3-D graphics, and the appropriate kinematics are assigned. Also, the virtual workcell of the spent fuel management process is implemented in the graphical environment, which is the same as the real environment. Using this mock-up, the workspace of the manipulators in the hot cell and the operator's view through the wall-mounted lead glass are analyzed. Also, for the dedicated maintenance operation, the analyses for the detailed area of the end effectors in accordance with the slave manipulator's position and orientation are carried out. The parts of the equipment that are located outside of the MSM's workspace are specified and the maintenance process of the parts using the servo manipulator that is mounted in the hot cell is proposed. To monitor the process in the hot cell remotely, the virtual display system by a virtual camera in the virtual work cell is also proposed. And the graphic simulation using a virtual mock-up is performed to verify the proposed maintenance process. The maintenance process proposed in this study can be effectively used in the real hot cell operation and the implemented virtual mock-up can be used for analyzing the various hot cell operations and enhancing the reliability and safety of the spent fuel management.
After COVID-19, organizations have widely adopted platforms such as zoom or developed their proprietary online real-time systems for remote work, with recent forays into incorporating the metaverse for meetings and publicity. While ongoing studies investigate the impact of avatar customization, expansive virtual environments, and past virtual experiences on participant satisfaction within virtual reality or metaverse settings, the utilization of the metaverse as a dedicated workspace is still an evolving area. There exists a notable gap in research concerning the factors influencing the performance of the metaverse as a workspace, particularly in non-immersive work-type metaverses. Unlike studies focusing on immersive virtual reality or metaverses emphasizing immersion and presence, the majority of contemporary work-oriented metaverses tend to be non-immersive. As such, understanding the factors that contribute to the success of these existing non-immersive metaverses becomes crucial. Hence, this paper aims to empirically analyze the factors impacting personal outcomes in the non-immersive metaverse workspace and derive implications from the results. To achieve this, the study adopts the Embodied Social Presence (ESP) model as a theoretical foundation, modifying and proposing a research model tailored to the non-immersive metaverse workspace. The findings validate that the impact of presence on task engagement and task involvement exhibits a moderating effect based on the metaverse platform used. Following interviews with participants engaged in non-immersive metaverse workplaces (specifically Gather Town and Ifland), a survey was conducted to gather comprehensive insights.
We present the initial results of on-going research for building a novel Mobile Haptic Interface (MHI) that can provide an unlimited haptic workspace in large immersive virtual environments. When a user explores a large virtual environment, the MHI can sense the position and orientation of the user, place itself to an appropriate configuration, and deliver force feedback, thereby enabling a virtually limitless workspace. Our MHI (PoMHI v0.5) features with omnidirectional mobility, a collision-free motion planning algorithm, and force feedback for general environment models. We also provide experimental results that show the fidelity of our mobile haptic interface.
Collaboration has become essential in the product design process due to internationalized and specialized business environments. This study presents a real-time collaborative 3D design workspace for distributed designers, focusing on the development and the evaluation of new interaction techniques supporting nonverbal communication such as awareness of participants, shared manipulation and tele-presence. Requirements were identified in terms of shared objects, shared workspaces and awareness through literature reviews and an observational study. An Augmented Reality based collaborative design workspace was developed, in which two main interaction techniques, Turn-table and Virtual Shadow, were incorporated to support shared manipulation and tele-presence. Turn-table provides intuitive shared manipulation of 3D models and physical cues for awareness of remote participants. Virtual shadow supports natural and continuous awareness of location, gestures and pointing of partners. A lab-based evaluation was conducted and the results showed that interaction techniques effectively supported awareness of general pointing and facilitated discussion in 3D model reviews. The workspace and the interaction techniques can facilitate more natural communication and increase the efficiency of collaboration on virtual 3D models between distributed participants (designer-designer, engineer, or modeler) in collaborative design environments.

In this study, the maintenance process by the servo manipulator has been developed for the parts of the equipment, which we unable to reach out by the Master-Slave Manipulator(MSM) in a hot cell. To do this, a virtual mock-up is implemented using the iか prototyping technology. Using this mock-up, the workspace of the manipulators in the hot cell and the operator's view through the wall-mounted lead glass have been analyzed. In addition, the path planning of the servo manipulator using the collision detection function of the virtual mock-up has been established. From these, the maintenance process for the parts of the equipment, which are located at the outside of the MSM's workspace using the servo manipulator has been proposed and verified through the graphic simulation. It is revealed that the proposed remote maintenance process of the equipment can effectively be used in the real hot cell operation. It is also believed that the implemented virtual mock-up of the hot cell can effectively be applied in analyzing the various hot cell operation and enhancing the reliability and safety in a hot cell remote handling for the spent fuel management.
