  • In this paper we propose a novel electrode structure for high transmittance in the Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) LC cell. We use the 'TechWiz LCD' for calculation of the director configuration and optical characteristics. We studied the area decreasing the transmittance through the electrode structure for wide viewing angle and proposed new electrode design to change LC director configuration in the area. We show the comparison of the calculated optical transmittance between the conventional PVA mode and the proposed PVA mode. From the results, we confirm that the optical transmittance of the proposed structure of the PVA cell becomes higher.

  • This paper deals with accurate image reconstruction of gamma camera using a coded-aperture mask based on pixel-type CsI(Tl) scintillator coupled with silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) array. Coded-aperture imaging (CAI) system typically has a smaller effective viewing angle than Compton camera. Thus, if the position of the gamma source to be searched is out of the fully-coded field-of-view (FCFOV) region of the CAI system, artifacts can be generated when the image is reconstructed by using the conventional cross-correlation (CC) method. In this work, we propose an effective method for more accurate reconstruction in CAI considering the source distribution of partially-coded field-of-view (PCFOV) in the reconstruction in attempt to overcome this drawback. We employed an iterative algorithm based on compressed-sensing (CS) and compared the reconstruction quality with that of the CC algorithm. Both algorithms were implemented and performed a systematic Monte Carlo simulation to demonstrate the possiblilty of the proposed method. The reconstructed image qualities were quantitatively evaluated in sense of the root mean square error (RMSE) and the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Our simulation results indicate that the proposed method provides more accurate location information of the simulated gamma source than the CC-based method.

  • The light extraction technology for improving the light efficiency of OLEDs is the core technology for extracting the light inside the OLEDs to the outside. This study demonstrates a simple method to generate random nanostructures (RNSs) containing high refractive index nanoparticles to improve light extraction and viewing angle characteristics. A simple dry low-temperature process makes the nanostructured scattering layer on the polymer resin widely used in the industry. The scattering layer has the shape of randomly distributed nanorods. To control optical properties, we focused on changing the shape and density of RNSs and adjusting the concentration of high refractive index nanoparticles. As a result, the film of the present invention exhibits a perpendicular transmittance of 85% at a wavelength of 550 nm. This film was used as a scattering layer to reduce substrate mode loss and improve EL efficiency in OLEDs.

  • We presented a micro hemi-sphere structure flexible film to improve the external quantum efficiency (EQE) in OLEDs. The micro hemi-sphere flexible film was fabricated with breath figure (BF) method and replica process. At 45 mg/mL of concentration, the size of the hemi-spheres was approximately 6.2 ㎛ were obtained which are the most circular shape. So, it was possible to yield the best performance with an improvement of 33 % in the EQE and the widest viewing angle ranging from 0° to 70°. As a result, the hemi-sphere film's size and distribution seem to play important roles in enhancing the EQE in OLEDs. Furthermore, the flexible hemi-sphere film based on polymeric materials could offer an effective, large-scale, mass-produced product and a simple process and approach to achieve high efficiency in flexible OLEDs.

  • The AGN unification model suggested the presence of obscuring material, a dusty torus, to explain the various types of AGN. IR SED model fitting is a crucial tool to probe the structure and properties of the dusty torus. We use a sample of 16 local quasi-stellar objects in Martinez-Paredes et al. (2017) with obtained NIR and MIR high-angular resolution (~0.3") imaging data from EMIR, CIRCE and CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC) while 4 objects have NIR high-angular resolution photometry from NICMOS/HST from the literature. The unresolved NIR emission from the NIR image analysis and low-resolution Spitzer/IRS spectra are used to construct NIR-MIR SEDs covering a larger spectral range. We investigate the sensitivity of the geometrical (e.g. viewing angle) and physical parameters (e.g. optical depth) of the clumpy dusty torus model of Nenkova et al. and the clumpy disk+outflow model of Hoenig et al. We aim to investigate the minimal dataset needed to well constrain the parameters of the models and derive the properties of the dusty torus. These results will allow us to plan future observations for a larger sample of high luminosity AGNs with the James Webb Space Telescope and the Giant Magellan Telescope.

  • Frequent accidents occur when workers at construction sites leave the safety zone, and particularly in the past 5 years, 9 fatal accidents occurred at the Korea Railroad Corporation due to train accidents on other tracks during track work. With the Severe Accident Punishment Act taking effect in January 2022, it is a priority to secure a safe work environment for workers at industrial (construction) sites. Therefore, there is a need to manage workers' departure from the safety zone (construction zone) and to facilitate communication within the construction zone. In this study, a mobile edge computing CCTV system is proposed that uses geofencing to determine whether workers are working in the danger zone, which can judge and respond in real-time to the ever-changing field environment. The proposed system is mobile and flexible, rather than server-based fixed CCTV. However, since it is designed mainly based on images, it has limitations in recognition rate depending on the environment such as distance, viewing angle, and illumination. As a way to compensate for this, it is required to develop more reliable equipment by combining technologies such as LiDAR and Radar.

  • The propagation speed of a circumstellar pattern revealed in the plane of the sky is often assumed to represent the expansion speed of the wind matter ejected from a post-main-sequence star at the center. We point out that the often-adopted isotropic wind assumption and the binary hypothesis as the underlying origin for the circumstellar pattern in the shape of multilayered shells are, however, mutually incompatible. We revisit the hydrodynamic models for spiral-shell patterns induced by the orbital motion of a hypothesized binary, of which one star is losing mass at a high rate. The distributions of transverse wind velocities as a function of position angle in the plane of the sky are explored along viewing directions. The variation of the transverse wind velocity is as large as half the average wind velocity over the entire three dimensional domain in the simulated models investigated in this work. The directional dependence of the wind velocity is indicative of the overall morphology of the circumstellar material, implying that kinematic information is an important ingredient in modeling the snapshot monitoring (often in the optical and near-infrared) or the spectral imaging observations for molecular line emissions.

  • Thermal sensors, also called thermal infrared wavelength sensors, measure temperature based on the intensity of infrared signals that reach the sensor. The infrared signals recognized by the sensor include infrared wavelength(0.7~3.0㎛) and radiant infrared wavelength(3.0~100㎛). Infrared(IR) wavelengths are divided into five bands: near infrared(NIR), shortwave infrared(SWIR), midwave infrared(MWIR), longwave infrared(LWIR), and far infrared(FIR). Most thermal sensors use the LWIR to capture images. Thermal sensors measure the temperature of the target in a non-contact manner, and the data can be affected by the sensor's viewing angle between the target and the sensor, the amount of atmospheric water vapor (humidity), air temperature, and ground conditions. In this study, the characteristics of three thermal imaging sensor models that are widely used for observation using unmanned aerial vehicles were evaluated, and the optimal application field was determined.

  • The optical properties of the materials composing organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are considered when designing the optical structure of OLEDs. Optical design is related to the optical properties, such as the efficiency, emission spectra, and color coordinates of OLED devices because of the microcavity effect in top-emitting OLEDs. In this study, the properties of top-emitting blue OLEDs were optimized by adjusting the thicknesses of the thin metal layer and capping layer (CPL). Deep blue emission was achieved in an OLED structure with a second cavity length, even when the transmittance of the thin metal layer was high. The thin metal film thickness ranges applicable to OLEDs with a second microcavity structure are wide. Instead, the thickness of the thin metal layer determines the optimized thickness of the CPL for high efficiency. A thinner metal layer means that higher efficiency can be obtained in OLED devices with a second microcavity structure. In addition, OLEDs with a thinner metal layer showed less color change as a function of the viewing angle.
