반사형 LCD를 위한 반사판의 설계 (Design of relfectors for reflective LCDs)

  • 최근 이동용 기기의 디스플레이 소자로서 주목받고 있는 반사영 LCD의 핵심 부품중의 하나인 반사판은 반사형 LCD가 최적의 디스플레이 특성을 나타나게 하기 위해서 반사되는 빛의 방향을 조절하는 동시에 사용자 위주의 시야각을 형성할 수 있어야 한다. 하지만 기존의 반사판들은 이러한 기능을 수행하기에는 부족한 점이 많아 실제에 적용되었을 경우 주변광원에 따라 문제가 되기도 한다. 본 연구에서는 이를 개선하기 위해서 기존 반사판들의 특성을 몇 가지 샘플에 대한 기초적 실험과 이론적 해석을 통해 살펴보고, 나아가 표면구조와 빛의 산란특성과의 관계를 이용하여 반사형 LCD용 반사표면구조를 설계해 보았다.

  • 본 연구에서 우리는 반사형 LCD용 반사판을 최적화하고자 한다. 반사판의 새로운 표면구조를 체계적인 수식적 접근 및 분석을 통해 구한 후, 반사특성의 결과를 바탕으로 기존의 표면구조와 비교해서 보다 최적화된 표면구조를 제시하고자 한다. 반사특성의 결과로는 새로운 표면구조가 기존의 표면구조에 비해 동일한 시야각 범위에서 보다 균일한 반사율 분포를 나타내고 있으며, 또한 주변환경을 충분히 고려해서 사용자 위주의 자유로운 시야각 범위 조절이 가능함을 알 수 있다. 결과적으로, 새로운 표면구조는 보다 균일한 반사율 분포를 가지게 됨으로써, 기존의 반사형 LCD의 시야각 의존성을 상당부분 개선할 수 있으리라 본다.

  • A new method to get reliable viewing angle measurements on LCD reflective display is presented. This method is based on the use of commercial Fourier optics viewing angle instruments already proposed by ELDIM for more than 15 years. This apparatus is capable to measure simultaneously quasi all the incidence and azimuth angles and to control very precisely the illumination of the sample. We show that, in contrast to other instruments, a clever illumination procedure with two different conditions allows separation of the intrinsic reflective contribution of the display and of the parasitic front end reflection. In this way, intrinsic performances of the display can be obtained at any incidence and azimuth angles and realistic observer conditions can be simulated.

  • We have developed charged particle type display using opposite-charged two particles. We fabricated the charged particle type display to be controlled the addressing layers by putting voltage. To get the effect of number of layers, we measured driving voltage, reflectivity, viewing angle, and color characteristics, for 1~2 layer. Reflectivity was different according to the number of layers and wavelength of yellow particles is alike to that.

  • This paper studies the method to extend the sensing range of a fiducial maker using a tilt camera. In the system that uses a fiducial marker to estimate their position on a map, the sensing range of the marker is an important issue. Although there are markers around, a robot with a fixed camera often misses nearby markers in the case that the viewing angle of the camera does not cover the sensing range of the marker. If the robot adjusts the viewing angle of a camera by adjusting the position information of the markers, this problem will be solved. The contribution of this paper is as follows. 1) Structural considerations for the tilting module of cameras attached to robots. 2) Tilting module control method considering the position of a marker and a robot. 3) Finally, verification of the differences in the sensing range of markers between the proposed system and the previous system.

  • The present study is part of the Special Research Project for the Construction of a Kansei Sensory Evaluation Model that is currently underway at the University of Tsukuba. In this study, a robot was operated by remote control at an actual art museum as part of a preliminary experiment. The results obtained therefrom were used to consider how people might view exhibits. In a previous study, a standard lens and s wide-angle lens were used to analyze differences in sensory-based movements, while VRML was used to analyze differences in these movements between a virtual and an actual museum. In the present study, the time delay in remote operation, which is currently unavoidable, placed some restrictions on the degree of freedom with which exhibits could be viewed, but it was apparent that sensory evaluation could be possible depending on the search behavior and viewing time. Furthermore specific viewing behaviors using the robot were observed, suggesting that new Kansei sensory perceptions were derived from these behaviors.

Safe and Comfortable Electromotive Cart for People of Advanced Age

  • When the people of advanced age drive the public electromotive cart of tricycle type on the slant and bumpy roads, the viewing angle of driver changes at the different directions. So the risk of traffic accident is increased. For the improvement of the above problem, we had produced the first experimental cart installed to the new driver´s seat based on the 2$\pi$ control theory. Based on the results of the driving test for the first experimental cart, we have produced the safe and comfortable electromotive cart.

A Fast Vision-based Head Tracking Method for Interactive Stereoscopic Viewing

  • In this paper, the problem of a viewer's head tracking in a desktop-based interactive stereoscopic display system is considered. A fast and low-cost approach to the problem is important for such a computing environment. The system under consideration utilizes a shuttle glass for stereoscopic display. The proposed method makes use of an image taken from a single low-cost video camera. By using a simple feature extraction algorithm, the obtained points corresponding to the image of the user-worn shuttle glass are used to estimate the glass center, its local 'yaw' angle, as measured with respect to the glass center, and its global 'yaw' angle as measured with respect to the camera location. With these estimations, the stereoscopic image synthetic program utilizes those values to interactively adjust the two-view stereoscopic image pair as displayed on a computer screen. The adjustment is carried out such that the so-obtained stereoscopic picture, when viewed from a current user position, provides a close-to-real perspective and depth perception. However, because the algorithm and device used are designed for fast computation, the estimation is typically not precise enough to provide a flicker-free interactive viewing. An error concealment method is thus proposed to alleviate the problem. This concealment method should be sufficient for applications that do not require a high degree of visual realism and interaction.

Gamma-ray emission from millisecond pulsars - an Outergap perspective

  • In this review paper we explain the following gamma-ray emission features from the millisecond pulsars. (1) Why is the dipolar field of millisecond pulsars so weak but the magnetic pair creation process may still be able to control the size of the outergap? (2) A sub-GeV pulse component could occur in the vicinity of the radio pulse of millisecond pulsars. (3) Orbital modulated gamma-rays should exist in the black widow systems for large viewing angle.

  • This paper describes a method of calculating the viewing parameters of a camera using a perspective view of a circular pattern. The proposed method determines the angle of pan, tilt, and swing, as well as the distance from the camera to the reference point of a world coordinate system, using simple equations. The proposed method is so simple and accurate that when used in a well-controled environment as in robot vision systems or visual inspection systems it may even seem trivial.
