  • In this article, we conducted a literature review about cognitive aging and social-psychological factors that influence cognitive function in old age. As getting older, cognitive function was mostly seen as declining, even though the effect of aging is differential across domains of cognitive ability. The negative view about cognitive aging might be reflecting social-psychological factors such as age stereotypes. Age stereotypes vary among different cultures, but appear to be negative in general. Negative age stereotypes are related to lower level of memory performances. Older adults who were experimentally presented with positive age stereotypes exhibited better memory performances than those with negative age stereotypes. Self-referent belief, appraisals of one's own cognitive abilities, could also affect actual performance in cognitive tasks. Older adults showed lower self-referent belief than younger adults, and it might explain memory decline in old age. Theoretical explanation and implication about the relationship between social-psychological factors and cognitive abilities were discussed.

  • Narratives are the old stories handed down for a long time, which are not personal creations but common ones for ages. They were formed from the public consciousness, passed orally and recorded in letters. There have been lots of studies on narratives about characters, whereas there have been poor in the studies on the great doctors. The author examined the narratives about great doctors in literature for successive generations, and made researches on world view and consciousness of reality reflected on the age directly or indirectly. And, as for the concrete survey contents, the idea on the marriage and family, marriage tiem, marriage selection, and the family planning after marriage etc. were center. As for the result examined in accordance with this, the data analysis was made by use of SPSS. And, as a result of the analysis, following conclusion was obtained. 1. This result is higher than 4.6% of Japan. Thus, it can be regarded as what reflected the tendency that the spinsterhood is increasing, with the decrease of the necessity about the marriage of the unmarried women of our nation recently. 2. Desiring marriage time is average 26.93 years old. Thus, it foreshowed that the late marriage tendency would continue. The relevancy to this late marriage was high (P<.001), in case that the age is high, and that the education level of parents is low (P<.01), and in case of the lone father and mother(P<.001) 3. The age difference with the spouse at the time of marriage is average 3.1 age. Thus, it was the tendency that 0.2 age was narrowed than the recent data of Statistics Agency. And, the difference appeared narrow, in case that the age of respondent is high and the level of education is high(P<.001). • White Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq.) is one of the fast growing species in Indonesia and has the potential as the raw material for pulp and paper. In this research, 3, 5, and 7 years old White Jabon woods were pulped under different active alkali charge of 15%, 18%, 21%, 24%, and 27%, and its effect on delignification degree, kappa number, pulp yield, pulp viscosity, brightness, unbeaten freeness, and delignification selectivity was investigated. The results showed that tree age and active alkali concentration influenced the quality of pulp and pulping properties, except for that of unbeaten freeness. Delignification degree increased with increasing active alkali charge, and this brought about the decrease of pulp kappa number. The pulping yield tended to decrease below the Klason lignin of approximately 4%. Even though the 3 years old wood resulted in the highest brightness and highest delignification selectivity, the highest pulp viscosity was obtained with the 5 years old wood. The dominant fiber length of all wood ages was in the range of 1.2 - 2.0 mm. The 3 years old wood was considered to be the most promising raw material for kraft pulping in the view point of pulping properties, pulp quality and harvesting rotation.

  • The purpose of this study are two-fold; 1) to identify the differences in the view of environmental value between 6-years-olds and 12-years-old, 2) to identify the differences in the attitude towards animals and plants between male-and female students. To accomplish the purposes of this study, two researchers deeply interviewed ten 6-years-old and 12-years-old boys and girls, respectively. First, the interviewees are asked to rank six constituents in nature, human-being, tiger, ant, gingko tree, weed, and stone, from their views of environmental value. Then, the interviewees were asked to talk about their various interaction with animals and plants. The results of this study are as follows; 1) In evaluating the value of nature constituents, 12-years-olds tended to be affected by scientific knowledge. On the other hand, 6-years-olds tended to evaluate the value of nature constituents by their emotional feeling; 2) From the perspectives of environmental ethics, 12-years-olds showed attitudes in anthropocentric or holistic ethics. On the other hand, 6-years-olds showed attitudes in nonanthropocentric ethics; 3) In evaluating the value of nature constituents, 12-year-olds tended to consider the constituent′s instrumental values and 6-years-olds tended to consider their intrinsic values; 4) From the perspectives of "ethics of care", females, especially 12-years females tended to take care of plants. The results propose more emphasis of environmental "sensuous" in school environmental education. And male- and female students should be expected fairly in their environmental attitudes, especially in taking care of natural creatures.

  • This study was carried out to get basic information that can be used in quality control for processing ginseng products and also in separation of pure ginsenosides for experimental purpose. The composition of various parts of 6 year-old ginseng was 4.1% of rhizome (node), 47.7% of main root, 34.1% of lateral root and 14.1% of fine Toot on dried weight basis. The weight ratios of epidermis-cortex and xylem were about 1 : 1 in main root and about 2 : 1 in lateral root. The distribution of total saponin content shows 29.2% in main root, 34.6% in lateral root, 29.1% in fine root and 7% in rhizome, but the order of the content per unit weight was fine root > rhizome > lateral root > main root. Total saponin content according to age of root was increased gradually within 3% for 6 years, as compared with two year old root. In view of the increase of root weight owing to the net amount of saponin in root increased continuously. The increase rates of total saponins per year were 3.1,12.3,19.8,43.8 and 21.1% in 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 years-old ginseng root, respectively.

  • For 387 married women in their 20s to 50s, we inquired about the differences in whether they intended on moving into a welfare facility, depending on their views on supporting the elderly and the burden of supporting elderly parents, and tried to find out factors that would affect their decision to move into a welfare facility. With those objectives in mind, we conducted a survey targeting married women in their 20s to 50s who live in Seoul, Daejun or a city or county in Choongnam-do, and carried out frequency analysis, intersection analysis, one-way ANOVA and judge analysis. Our findings from those analyses are summarized as follows. First, when considering married women's characteristics and examining their intention of moving into a welfare facility for the elderly, there was a meaningful difference in their intention depending on age, academic background, occupation, and area of residence. Second, our analysis of the differences in their intention of moving in, based on married women's view on supporting the elderly and the burden of supporting elderly parents, indicates that due to these responsibilities, the greatest number of married women expressed their intention of moving in if a convenient facility for the elderly and service were provided. However, the analysis for the intention of moving in depending on savings for old age, did not exhibit any meaningful difference. Third, from the examination of determining factors for married women's intention of moving into a welfare facility for the elderly, based on age, academic background, occupation, residential area, responsibility for supporting an elderly family member and savings for old age, it was found that the burden of support was the only meaningful effective factor.
