The Symbol of Hùng Kings: From a Founding Myth to Modern National Belief

  • Using sociohistorical approaches, the paper shows that before the 15th century, myths of Hùng Kings, considered to be the descendants of the Dragon race and ancestors of the Vietnamese people, may have existed locally. Vietnamese rulers and people strongly supported the integration of these myths into indigenous culture to form a new belief: the worship of Hùng Kings. By way of discovering the transformation process from the founding myths to the modern national beliefs of the Vietnamese, this paper attempts to demonstrate that both myths and worship of Hùng Kings were politically created and encouraged. The article also focuses on the reasons why these myths and worship reached a broad public as these were integrated into Vietnamese culture.

19세기 베트남 관선의 광동(廣東) 왕래 시말 (Vietnamese Court Vessel Journeys to Canton in the 19th Century)

  • In terms of seaborne contacts of Vietnamese court with foreign countries had two directions in the 19th century. One was with Island Southeast Asian ports such as Singapore, Malacca, Penang, Batavia, and Manila. The other direction was to Canton. The Canton contact of Vietnam again can be interpreted as one of the two directions of Vietnamese contact with China. The inland route far to Beijing was based on the political and diplomatic consideration, while the closer route to Canton by the court vessels was more for the economic consideration as the case for the contact with the Island Southeast Asia. In this article, author discusses three issues to illuminate the nature of the trips of the court vessels of the Nguyễn dynasty to Canton. First is to clarify detail itinerary of the trip from the Thuận An Estuary to the City of Canton via Đà Nãng and Hanan. Unlike to the Western ships that visited Canton but anchored at the Huang Fu, Vietnamese square-rigged/copper-bottomed ships sailed up the Pearl river to the Guangzhou city front to stay for four or five months before they returned to Vietnam. In the second chapter, various kinds of observation of the Vietnamese officials are discussed. If the objects of the observation are divided into two categories, one is the world Westerners in Canton, and the other is the world of Chinese. In a same place, Canton, the Vietnamese officials could have enough chance to compare the two worlds clearly. An important consequence for the Vietnamese officials was to conclude that the mechanical technology of the Westerners was better than that of Chinese. This kind of conclusion led the Vietnamese court to send court personnels to learn Western technologies and languages in the port cities of Island Southeast Asia and to enlarge contacts with them. In the last chapter, author tries to find out the items that the Vietnamese mission purchased in Canton in exchange to the Vietnamese products. The items that the Vietnamese mission purchased included ceramics, silk, books, and medicines. With the support of the Chinese settlers in Vietnam the mission was able to be involved in the deal of illegal items such as opium, and possibly some kinds of precious ginseng from Korea. Overall, the process of the itinerary, observation, and purchase during the trip to Canton was the way to form the new point of view of Vietnamese intellectuals towards China standing from the side of Westerners. To the Vietnamese who experienced both Canton/Macao and the Western worlds in the port cities of Island Southeast Asia China was not the only center of the world, nor the Westerners could be looked down as the barbarians. In Canton, a peripheral region looked from the imperial capital Beijing, but the most internationalized city of China at that time, Vietnamese officials were training themselves to overcome China.

예비교사들의 베트남어 습득을 위한 강좌: 글로벌·다문화 교육역량 육성의 일환 (Vietnamese Language Classes to Develop Prospective Teachers' Global-Multicultural Competences)

  • 기회의 땅 베트남에는 수많은 한국 기업들이 진출해 있으며 베트남어를 구사할 수 있는 인재의 공급이 절실하다. 국내 교실에서는 베트남 배경의 학생들이 그 수에 있어 1, 2위를 차지하고 있어, 교사들이 베트남어로 소통할 수 있다면 긍정적 효과는 클 것이다. 본 논문은 국내 최초로 경북대학교 사범대학이 대학생 예비교사들의 글로벌·다문화 교육역량 강화를 위해 베트남어를 개발·운영한 결과를 평가하였다. 베트남어 교육은 방학을 이용하여 두 차례 실시되었고, 총 20명이 참가하였다. 1, 2차 교육 모두에서 참가자들의 글로벌·다문화 교육 역량은 집단상 유의미한 증가를 보였으며, 95%의 학습자들에게서 향상이 관찰되었다. 참가자들은 더 많은 학생들이 베트남어 학습 기회를 가지게 되기를 바란다고 했으며, 베트남 문화에 대한 편견을 없애고 지식과 이해를 넓혔으며, 베트남어로 소통하는 자신들을 그려보게 되었다. 또한 베트남어 심화학습과 베트남 문화와의 접촉을 이어 갈 수 있는 새 방안의 마련을 건의하였다. 타 양성기관들이 본 사례를 응용하여, 조화로운 한-베 다문화 학교 운영과 경제발전에 도움이 되기를 바란다.

Otherness and Diversity in Vietnamese Confucianism: The Formation of the Symbol of the Ancestral King Lạc Long Quân Based on the Nguyễn Huy Thiệp Complex

  • Quân sư phụ (君師父) is a concept of respectfulness derived from the Chinese Confucian concepts of sān gāng wǔ cháng (三綱五常, the Three Principles and Five Constant Virtues) and sān cóng sì dé (三從四德, the Four Virtues Applied to the Three Male Figures) that is applied to Vietnamese Confucianism in regards to not only kings but also Chinese Emperors, as well as Chinese culture generally. In his famous literary work Vàng lửa (Golden Fire), Nguyễn Huy Thiệp revealed the Vietnamese attitude to Chinese civilization: "Our country could be characterized as nhược tiểu (弱小, small and weak). Vietnam was like a maiden forcibly deflowered by Chinese civilization. 'She' enjoyed it, but also came to hate it and feel disgraced by it" (Nguyễn 1988). This is a special sentiment or psychological complex of the Vietnamese in relation to Chinese civilization. The research findings are that the Nguyễn Huy Thiệp complex is the rationale behind which the symbol of the ancestral King Lạc Long Quân (貉龍君) was altered via SinoVietnamese motifs in order to develop Vietnamese Confucian thought.

Comparison of mandibular arch forms of Korean and Vietnamese patients by using facial axis points on three-dimensional models

  • Objective: This study was aimed at comparing the mandibular arch forms of Korean and Vietnamese patients by using facial axis (FA) points on three-dimensional (3D) models. Methods: Mandibular casts of 68 Korean (Class I malocclusion, 30; Class II malocclusion, 38) and 78 Vietnamese (Class I malocclusion, 41; Class II malocclusion, 37) patients were scanned in their occluded positions and grouped according to arch form (tapered, ovoid, and square). The FA point of each tooth was digitized on the 3D mandibular models. The measurements and frequency distributions of the arch forms were compared between the ethnic groups. Results: The Vietnamese patients had significantly greater intercanine depth and intercanine and intermolar width-to-depth ratios than the Korean patients (p < 0.05). The frequency distributions of the arch forms were also significantly different (p = 0.038), but no sexual dimorphism was found. Conclusions: Vietnamese people tend to have deeper and wider arches than Korean people. The three arch forms are evenly distributed in Korean people, but Vietnamese people frequently have square arches. Clinicians should identify the correct arch form of an ethnic group before initiating orthodontic treatment.

Building an Annotated English-Vietnamese Parallel Corpus for Training Vietnamese-related NLPs

  • In NLP (Natural Language Processing) tasks, the highest difficulty which computers had to face with, is the built-in ambiguity of Natural Languages. To disambiguate it, formerly, they based on human-devised rules. Building such a complete rule-set is time-consuming and labor-intensive task whilst it doesn't cover all the cases. Besides, when the scale of system increases, it is very difficult to control that rule-set. So, recently, many NLP tasks have changed from rule-based approaches into corpus-based approaches with large annotated corpora. Corpus-based NLP tasks for such popular languages as English, French, etc. have been well studied with satisfactory achievements. In contrast, corpus-based NLP tasks for Vietnamese are at a deadlock due to absence of annotated training data. Furthermore, hand-annotation of even reasonably well-determined features such as part-of-speech (POS) tags has proved to be labor intensive and costly. In this paper, we present our building an annotated English-Vietnamese parallel aligned corpus named EVC to train for Vietnamese-related NLP tasks such as Word Segmentation, POS-tagger, Word Order transfer, Word Sense Disambiguation, English-to-Vietnamese Machine Translation, etc.

Motivating Underserved Vietnamese Americans to Obtain Colorectal Cancer Screening: Evaluation of a Culturally Tailored DVD Intervention

  • Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer death among Vietnamese Americans, yet screening remains underutilized. We investigated the effectiveness of a culturally tailored DVD intervention in promoting CRC screening among unscreened Vietnamese Americans age 50 and over. Materials and Methods: Using a community-based participatory research approach, we conducted a trial comparing twenty-eight subjects who received a mailed DVD in Vietnamese, with twenty-eight subjects who received a mailed brochure in Vietnamese. Subjects completed telephone surveys at baseline, One-month, and one-year. The primary outcome was receipt of screening. Secondary measures were participants' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about CRC screening. Two focus groups explored the intervention's acceptability and effectiveness. Results: At one year, CRC screening rates of 57.1% and 42.9% were observed in experimental and control group respectively (p=0.42), Subjects in both groups showed increased knowledge about CRC after one month. Focus group findings revealed that the DVD was an effective method of communicating information and would help promote screening. Conclusions: The findings suggest that culturally tailored, linguistically appropriate content is more important than the type of media used. This relatively low intensity, low cost intervention utilizing a DVD can be another useful method for outreach to the often hard-to-reach unscreened population.

한국 영화와 TV 드라마에 나타난 베트남 여성상 고찰 (A study on Vietnamese Women in Korean Films and TV Dramas)

  • To properly answer the question 'Why have Vietnamese Women kept appearing in Korean Films and TV dramas?', We need to induce Postcolonial discourse along with historical and cultural similarities between Korea and Vietnam. It is because the relationship of two countries can be defined as a neocolonialism specially in view of economic relationship. Koreans need to locate themselves on the superior position by othering Vietnamese women, who are close enough to be compared and also distant enough to be othered. This paper is intended to bring their being in Korean films and TV dramas under the light of postcolonial discourse. According to the postcolonial concepts such as ambivalence, stereotyping and subaltern, Korean films and TV dramas are classified into three groups, which are Vietnam war melodramas, Horror movies based in Vietnam, and TV dramas with Vietnamese brides. War melodramas have been othering Vietnamese woman through ambivalence of the fear of Vietcom warrior and the fascination of exotic beauty. Horror movies, produced about 10 years later, brought the Vietnamese women back to Korean audience, stereotyping them into ghosts, which are incarnated through the suppression and eruption of sexual desire. The third group consists mainly of TV dramas. Their story usually evolves around Vietnamese brides migrating into Korea. The women are forced into the position of Subaltern, not representing themselves in their own voices. Facing multi-cultural society, our visual media are requested to modify their neocolonial approach of presenting Vietnamese women. To accomplish the goal, they have to find ways of storytelling to show the women in their everyday lives and help them to speak for themselves.

베트남 화인의 귀환이주와 정체성 변화에 관한 연구 (Return Migration and Identity Shifting: A Case Study of the Ethnic Chinese Refugees in Vietnam)

  • 본 연구는 난민으로 떠났던 베트남 화인들이 '고국'인 베트남으로 돌아오거나 재정착하는 과정에서 경험하고 인식한 바에 초점을 두고 디아스포라 정체성의 변환 과정과 귀환이주의 역동성을 고찰한 것이다. 대개 1970~80년대 여러 가지 정치적, 경제적 이유로 베트남을 탈출하였던 화인 중 다수가 1990년대 후반부터 다시 베트남으로 돌아오고 있다. 베트남 화인 이주민의 귀국 현상과 관련하여 흥미로운 점은 그들이 베트남을 떠날 때는 대부분 '호아'(Hoa) 또는 '호아끼우'(Hoa Kiểu,)로 불렸으나, 베트남으로 돌아올 때는 다른 베트남 출신 귀국자들과 동일하게 베트남 해외동포라는 의미의 '비엣끼우'(Việt Kiểu)로 불리고 있다는 점이다. 이들은 베트남 정부의 '귀국동포 우대정책'의 혜택을 함께 누리고 있다. 비록 한때 이들에게 부여된 '중국인' 정체성으로 인해 파도가 거센 바다에 목숨을 맡기는 위험을 감수하도록 하였으나, 지금은 이러한 우대정책과 함께 이들이 '베트남인' 정체성을 부착하고 '고국' 베트남으로 돌아오고 있는 것이다. 이 연구는 이와 같이 '화교'에서 '비엣끼우'로 정체성 변환이라는 흥미로운 현상에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 또한 중국계 베트남 이주민의 귀환 현상에는 복합적인 정체성의 문제가 내포되어 있다. 한마디로 '혼종 디아스포라'(hybrid diaspora)라고 할 수 있는 카테고리가 만들어진다.

베트남의 캄보디아 병합(1835-1847) - 여왕 메이(Mei)의 처리문제를 중심으로 (Vietnamese Annexation of Cambodia(1835-1847) with the Handling of the Queen Mei)

  • In 1835, quickly after the Cambodian king Ang Chan died, Vietnamese emperor Minh Mang started to proceed his ambition to grab the territory of Cambodia. As the first step, he stationed big forces led by Truong Minh Giang in Phnom Phen, and appointed the Ang Chan's second daughter, Mei, as the successor of her father but with the humble title of Chan Lap Quan Chu, or the Prefecture sovereign of Cambodia. This article discusses the ways how the Vietnamese leaders manipulated the status of the Cambodian queen with each step of protection, assimilation, and finally a rupture. The author seeks for Vietnamese own theory of annexation in the process. In doing so, the author claims that Vietnamese tough policy of annexation was closely interwoven with the unequal relationship between the Vietnamese emperors and the Cambodian queen, i. e. men and woman. The first chapter discusses how and why the second daughter was chosen, and what in reality the status of the queen was under the protection of Vietnamese general Truong Minh Giang. Second chapter shows how much Mei was bullied by the Vietnamese. She was kidnapped to Vietnam, and was even regarded by the Cambodian people that she became the 'lover' or the 'concubine' of the general Truong Minh Giang. Third chapter deals with Vietnam's retreat forced by the Cambodian resistance together with the Thai intervention, and discusses how much Vietnam tried to maintain its authority over Cambodia through the queen Mei. Cambodia, in the 19th century, was a experimental place for the 'mission of civilization' from the side of Vietnam. Mei was a main character in this period from the beginning to the end. The conclusion of this article stresses that the desire of Vietnam ('civilized') to assimilate Cambodia ('barbarious') was strengthened by the psychology of the male master (Vietnam) to domesticate the female subject (Cambodia). The relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia was not only political but also gender oriented. In this epic, the existence of the queen Mei should be regarded as an important key to understanding of the Vietnamese theory for the annexation of Cambodia.
