In the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) streaming systems, peers randomly form a network overlay to share video resources with a data scheduling scheme. A data scheduling scheme can have a great impact on system performance, which should achieve two optimal objectives at the same time ideally. The two optimization objectives are to improve the perceived video quality and maximize the network throughput, respectively. Maximizing network throughput means improving the utilization of peer's upload bandwidth. However, maximizing network throughput will result in a reduction in the perceived video quality, and vice versa. Therefore, to achieve the above two objects simultaneously, we proposed a new data scheduling scheme based on multi-objective particle swarm optimization data scheduling scheme, called MOPSO-DS scheme. To design the MOPSO-DS scheme, we first formulated the data scheduling optimization problem as a multi-objective optimization problem. Then, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed by encoding the neighbors of peers as the position vector of the particles. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrated the MOPSO-DS scheme could improve the system performance effectively.
The performance of video-on-demand(VOD) systems is known to be mainly dependent on a scheduling mechanism which they employ. Broadcast-based scheduling schemes have attracted a lot of attention as an efficient way of distributing popular videos to very large client populations. The main motivations of broadcasting scheduling mechanisms are that they scale up extremely well and they have very modest bandwidth requirements. This paper studies this issue and proposes a new broadcasting scheduling mechanism, named fast universal video dis-tribution(FUVD). FUVD scheme dynamically constructs a video broadcasting schedule in response to client requests, and broadcasts video seg-ments according to this schedule. This paper also evaluates the performance of FUVD on the basis of a simulation approach. The simulation results indicate that FUVD protocol shows a superior performance over UD, CBHD, and NPB in terms of the average response time.
Adaptability is an important issue in video streaming over mobile environments, since the clients may request videos with great differences in their workload. In this paper, we propose the issues in limited bandwidth scheduling for efficient MPEG-4 video stream transmission over a mobile or wireless network. In the phase of admission control, the amount of bandwidth allocated to serve a video request is the mean bandwidth requirement of its requested video. The dynamic allocation of bandwidth in the phase of scheduling depends on the playback buffer levels of the clients with an objective to make it more adaptive to the playback situation of individual clients. In the proposed RTA scheduling protocol, more bandwidth may be allocated temporarily to the client whose buffer level is low. By employing the buffer level based scheduling policy, this protocol attempts to maximize the real-time performance of individual playback while minimizing the impact of transient overloading. Extensive simulation experiments have been performed to investigate the performance characteristics of the RTA protocol as comparing with BSBA protocol. This RTA protocol shows the better performance by transferring more frames than BSBA protocol.Computer simulations reveals that the standard deviation of the bit rate error of the proposed scheme is 50% less than that of the conventional method.
HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is a technique that adapts its video quality to network conditions for providing Quality of Experience. In the HAS approach, a video content is encoded at multiple bitrates and the encoded video content is divided into several video segments. A HAS player estimates the network bandwidth and adjusts the video bitrate based on estimated bandwidth. However, the segment scheduler in the conventional HAS player requests video segments periodically without considering TCP. If the waiting duration for the next segment request is quite long, the TCP connection can be initialized and it restarts slow-start. Slow-start causes the reduction in TCP throughput and consequentially leads to low-quality video streaming. In this study, we propose a TCP-aware segment scheduling scheme to improve performance of HAS service. The proposed scheme adjusts request time for the next video request to prevent initialization of TCP connection and also considers the point of scheduling time. The simulation proves that our scheme improves the Quality of Service of the HAS service without buffer underflow issue.
In video-on-demand(VOD) systems, a broadcast-based scheduling mechanism is known to be a very efficient technique for disseminating popular videos to very large client populations. The main motivations of broadcasting scheduling mechanisms are that they scale up extremely well and they have very modest bandwidth requirements. This paper proposes a new dynamic broadcasting scheduling mechanism, named FDBS (fast dynamic broadcasting scheme), and proves its correctness. This paper also evaluates the performance of FDBS on the basis of a simulation approach. The simulation results indicate that FDBS shows a superior performance over UD, CBHD, and NPB in terms of the average response time with very reasonable bandwidth requirements.

Recent advancements in broadband wireless communication technologies enable mobile users to receive video streaming services with various smart devices. The long term evolution (LTE) network provides high bandwidth and low latency for several emerging mobile applications. This paper proposes the buffer aware scheduling (BAS) approach to schedule the downlink video traffic in LTE network. The proposed BAS scheme applies the weighting function to heuristically adjust the scheduling priority by considering the buffer status and channel condition of UE so as to reduce the time that UE stays in the connected state without receiving data. Both of 1080P and 2160P resolution video streaming sources were applied for exhaustive simulations to examine the performance of the proposed scheme by comparing to that of the fair bandwidth (FB) and the best channel quality indicator (CQI) schemes. The simulation results indicate that the proposed BAS scheme not only achieves better performance in power saving, streaming delivery time, and throughput than the FB scheme while maintaining the similar performance as the best CQI scheme in light traffic load. Specifically, the proposed scheme reduces streaming delivery time and generates less signaling overhead than the best CQI scheme when the traffic load is heavy.
Network bandwidth is one of the major factors that impact the cost of a video service. In this paper we propose approaches to reducing the bandwidth requirement for transporting MPEG-4 video traffic over wireless LANs while guaranteeing a required level of quality of service(QoS). To support high quality video playbacks, video frames must be transported to the client prior to their playback times. A real-time transmission scheduling is used for this purpose, which transmits each frame assigned with a priority according to its importance. It addresses the challenge for a scheduling algorithm that efficiently handles the changing workloads of MPEG-4 video traffic. The goal of our research is to maximize the number of frames that are transported within their deadlines while minimizing the tardiness of frames that missed their deadlines. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of similar service mechanisms through extensive simulation experiments.
In this paper, we propose a new scheduling method that can guarantee reliable jitter by minimizing the queue length variation in the streaming service provisioning such as IPTV and VoD. The amount of traffic to be delivered within a certain time is very fluid because MPEG-4 and H.264 encoders use VBR(Variable Bit Rate) for delivering video streaming traffic. This VBR characteristic increases the end-to-end propagation delay variation when existing scheduling methods are used for delivering video frames. Therefore, we propose the new scheduling method that can minimize change rate of queue length by adaptively controling service rate taking into account the size of bulk incoming packets and arrival rate for bulk streaming traffic. Video frames can be more reliably transmitted through the minimization of the queue length variation using the proposed method. We use the queueing model and also carry out OPNET simulation to validate the proposed method.

Scalable video coding can handle peer heterogeneity of P2P streaming applications, but there is still a lack of comprehensive studies on how to use it to improve video playback quality. In this paper we propose a capacity aware scalable video coding mechanism for P2P on demand streaming system. The proposed mechanism includes capacity based neighbor selection, adaptive data scheduling and streaming layer adjustment, and can enable each peer to select appropriate streaming layers and acquire streaming chunks with proper sequence, along with choosing specific peers to provide them. Simulation results show that the presented mechanism can decrease the system's startup and playback delay, and increase the video playback quality as well as playback continuity, and thus it provides a better quality of experience for users.
In this paper, we propose scheduling algorithms for transporting variable-bit-rate video stream using playback buffer level of the clients over wireless communication networks. The proposed algorithms attempt to maximize the utilization of limited bandwidth between the central video server and the clients over a mobile network. Since a video server may serve several video request at the same time, it is important to allocate and utilize network bandwidth to serve them fairly and efficiently. In order to improve the quality of service and real-time performance of individual video playback, the video server attempts to allocate temporarily more network bandwidth to serve a video request with the lower buffer level preferentially. The simulation results prove the fair service and load balancing among the mobile concurrent clients with different buffer levels and hence maximizing the number of frames that are transported successfully to the client prior to their playback times.
