In this paper, we propose a hybrid Wyner-Ziv video coding structure that combines conventional motion predictive video coding and Wyner-Ziv video coding to eliminate the feedback channel, which is a major practical problem in applications using the Wyner-Ziv video coding approach. The proposed method divides a hybrid frame into two regions. One is coded by a motion predictive video coder, and the other by the Wyner-Ziv coding method. The proposed encoder estimates side information with low computational complexity, using the coding information of the motion predictive coded region, and estimates the number of syndrome bits required to decode the region. The decoder generates side information using the same method as the encoder, which also reduces the computational complexity in the decoder. Experimental results show that the proposed method can eliminate the feedback channel without incurring a significant rate-distortion performance loss.
Current communication networks consist of channels with various throughputs, protocols, and packet loss rates. Moreover, there are also diverse user multimedia consumption devices having different capabilities and screen sizes. Thus, a practical necessity of scalability on video coding have been gradually increasing. Recently, The Scalable High Efficiency Video Coding(SHVC) standard is developed by Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding(JCT-VC) organized in cooperation with MPEG of ISO/IEC and VCEG of ITU-T. This paper introduces coding tools of SHVC including adopted and unadopted tools discussed in the process of the SHVC standardization. Furthermore, the individual tool and combined tool set are evaluated in terms of coding efficiency relative to a single layer coding structure. This analysis would be useful for developing a fast SHVC encoder as well as researching on a new scalable coding tool.

H.264/AVC High 4:4:4 Intra/Predictive profiles supports RGB 4:4:4 sequences for high fidelity video. RGB color planes rather than YCbCr color planes are preferred by high-fidelity video applications such as digital cinema, medical imaging, and UHDTV. Several RGB coding tools have therefore been developed to improve the coding efficiency of RGB video. In this paper, we propose a new method to extract more accurate correlation parameters for inter-plane prediction. We use a searching method to determine the matched macroblock (MB) that has a similar inter-color relation to the current MB. Using this block, we can infer more accurate correlation parameters to predict chroma MB from luma MB. Our proposed inter-plane prediction mode shows an average bits saving of 15.6% and a PSNR increase of 0.99 dB compared with H.264 high4:4:4 intra-profile RGB coding. Furthermore, extensive performance evaluation revealed that our proposed algorithm has better coding efficiency than existing algorithms..
Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is the latest video coding standard, which had been developed by the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) of ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) in 2020. Although VVC can provide powerful coding performance, it requires tremendous computational complexity to determine the optimal block structures during the encoding process. In this paper, we propose a fast ternary tree decision method using two neural networks with 7 nodes as input vector based on the multi-layer perceptron structure, names STH-NN and STV-NN. As a training result of neural network, the STH-NN and STV-NN achieved accuracies of 85% and 91%, respectively. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the encoding complexity up to 25% with unnoticeable coding loss compared to the VVC test model (VTM).
This paper proposes a realistic multi-view scalable video coding scheme designed for user's interest in 3D content services and the usage in the future computing environment. Future video coding schemes should support realistic services that make users feel the 3-D presence through stereoscopic or multi-view videos, as well as to accomplish the so-called one-source multi-use services in order to comprehensively support diverse transmission environments and terminals. Unlike the most of video coding methods which only support two-dimensional display, the proposed coding scheme in this paper is the method which can support such realistic services. This paper designs and also implements the proposed coding scheme through integrating Multi-view Video Coding scheme and Scalable Video Coding scheme, then shows its possibility of realization of 3D services by the simulation. The simulation results show the proposed structure remarkably improves the performance of random access with almost the same coding efficiency.

Supporting video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks is particularly challenging due to the time-varying and error-prone characteristics of the wireless channel. In this paper, we propose a joint optimization scheme for video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks. Our coding scheme, called Joint Source/Network Coding (JSNC), combines source coding and network coding to maximize the video quality under the limited wireless resources and coding constraints. JSNC segments the streaming data into generations at the source node and exploits the intra-session coding on both the source and the intermediate nodes. The size of the generation and the level of redundancy influence the streaming performance significantly and need to be determined carefully. We formulate the problem as an optimization problem with the objective of minimizing the end-to-end distortion by jointly considering the generation size and the coding redundancy. The simulation results demonstrate that, with the appropriate generation size and coding redundancy, the JSNC scheme can achieve an optimal performance for video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks.

The architecture of a programmable video codec IC is described that employs multiple vector processors in a single chip. The vector processors operate in parallel and communicate with one another through on-chip shared memories. A single scalar control processor schedules each vector processor independently to achieve real-tiem video coding with special vector instructions. With programmable interconnection buses, the proposed architecture performs multi-processing of tasks and data in video coding. Therefore, it can provide good parallelism as well as good programmability. especially, it can operate multithread video coding, which processes several independent image sequences simultaneously. We explain its scheduling, multithred video coding, and vector processor architectures. We implemented a prototype video codec with a 0.8um CMOS cell-based technology for the multi-standard videophone. This codec can execute video encoding and decoding simultaneously for the QCIF image at a frame rate of 30Hz.

In this paper, we propose an integrated spatial and view scalable video codec based on high efficiency video coding (HEVC). The proposed video codec is developed based on similarity and uniqueness between the scalable extension and 3D multi-view extension of HEVC. To improve compression efficiency using the proposed scalable multi-view video codec, inter-layer and inter-view predictions are jointly employed by using high-level syntaxes that are defined to identify view and layer information. For the inter-view and inter-layer predictions, a decoded picture buffer (DPB) management algorithm is also proposed. The inter-view and inter-layer motion predictions are integrated into a consolidated prediction by harmonizing with the temporal motion prediction of HEVC. We found that the proposed scalable multi-view codec achieves bitrate reduction of 36.1%, 31.6% and 15.8% on the top of ${\times}2$, ${\times}1.5$ parallel scalable codec and parallel multi-view codec, respectively.

In this paper, we propose a new bit assignment scheme for Wyner-Ziv video coding. Distributed video coding (DVC) is a new video coding paradigm which enables greatly low complexity encoding because it does not have any motion prediction module at encoder. Therefore, it is very well suited for many applications such as video communication, video surveillance, extremely low power consumption video coding, and other portable applications. Theoretically, the Wyner-Ziv video coding is proved to achieve the same rate-distortion (RD) performance comparable to that of the joint video coding. However, its RD performance has much gap compared to MC-DCT-based video coding such as H.264/AVC. Moreover, Transform Domain Wyner-Ziv (TDWZ) video coding which is a kind of DVC with transform module has difficulty of exact bit assignment because the entire image is treated as a same message. In this paper, we propose a feasible bit assignment algorithm using adaptive quantization matrix selection for the TDWZ video coding. The proposed method can calculate suitable bit amount for each region using the local characteristics of image. Simulation results show that the proposed method can enhance coding performance.

VP8, an open web media video format, has recently attractedmuch attention, particularly from major web browser companies, as a video codec for HTML5 on internet due to its good coding efficiency and royalty-free policy. Compared to other video compression schemes such as H.264/AVC, it has several distinctive coding tools that help to ensure good coding efficiency and low decoding complexity. In this paper, we investigate its coding techniques and analyze its rate-distortion (R-D) coding performance as compared to that of H.264/AVC.
