A Study on management of interactive contents for digital television cooperated with digital video recorder (디지털 비디오 레코더와 연동한 DTV의 양방향 콘텐츠 관리에 대한 연구)

  • This paper describes a digital video recorder-based approach to realising interactive programmes on digital television. So far, it is very difficult that the most interactive programmes included the vast quantities of the content, whatever it is data or HD-ready broadcasting, are broadcasted on digital television via the set-top box. Furthermore it is not possible to envisage until IPTV was appeared. Even though IPTV makes possible for streaming the interactive services via broadband, it is not easy to receive tremendous contents for interactivity as set-top box at once. In this paper it will suggest an effective solution to resolve the download dilemma for the interactive services on DTV by employing the set-top box fitted with digital video recorder.

  • Recently, to analyze the cause of the railway accident objectively and quickly and prevent the accident, many countries are legislating for the installation of the black box what we call an event recorder, which records information about the operation of railway vehicle. Thus, the study of the event recorder has been in progress. Moreover, the analysis software that can analyze and express the stored data in the event recorder is required for the correct decision on the accident. Therefore, in this paper, we presented a design of analysis software which analyzes the data, plays the audio and video in the event recorder system. This software can quickly and accurately identify the cause of the accident and recognize the driving patterns and habits of the driver according to the operating section. In addition, by analyzing the audio and video data simultaneously in the previous accident, we expect that it is possible to prevent accidents in advance.

Optical system design for stereoscopic video-recorder (비디오 입체영상녹화를 위한 광학계 설계)

  • An optical system for a stereoscopic video recorder is designed with the field of view 42$^{\circ}$ and effective diameter 22 mm. We can use it by attaching it to the front lens of any video camera or camcorder to record a stereoscopic scene. This system is a double Kepler type afocal system to make the image erect and a bi-ocular type to record and display the stereoscopic scene. The optical tube length is folded with several flat mirrors and a beam splitter to be compact. This optical system is composed of 4 groups of lenses and each group serves as a relay lens for minimizing the vignetting effect. Whole field stereoscopic scenes may be captured by perpendicularly polarized alternated recording with a chopper and two perpendicular polarizers, without any loss of light energy. The displayed images may be seen stereoscopically with polarized spectacles and are kinetic because of an afterimage effect.

  • VOD(Video On Demand) that provides streaming service according to the user's requirement in real time, consists of the video streaming server and the client system. Since it is very hard to apply the traditional server-client model that a server communicates with many clients through 1:1 connection to VOD system because it requires very high network bandwidth, many researches have been done to address this problem. Batching technique is one of VOD system based on Multicast that requires very small network bandwidth. However, the batching based VOD system has a limitation that it is very hard to provide VCR(Video Cassette Recorder) ability. In this paper, we propose a technique that reduces the required network bandwidth to provide VCR function by using the characteristic of MPEG, one of international video compression standard. In the proposed technique, a new video stream for VCR function is constructed with I pictures that is able to be decoded independently. The new video stream for VCR function is transmitted with the video stream for normal play together in Batching manner. The performance evaluation result shows that the proposed technique not only reduces the required network bandwidth and memory usage but also decreases the CPU usages.

A Study on the Analysis of Driver Behavior in Traffic Accidents Using Driving Video Recorder (차량용 영상기록장치를 활용한 교통사고의 운전자 행태 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The automobiles in Korea have approximately 60 years of history and this is relatively short compared to advanced countries. However, considering the traffic accident rate or severity related to automobiles, various efforts are required to reduce traffic accidents. Various problems caused by traffic accidents are not only related to individual damages but also have become social problems. In order to resolve this, it is important to analyze the cause of traffic accidents. This study aims to suggest methods to reduce traffic accidents by analyzing driving behavior, which is one of the reasons for a number of traffic accidents that were collected through traffic accident videos reported using DVRs (Driving Video Recorder) and were aired to the public via a SBS TV program for the past two years and four months. In particular, unlike other existing studies that aim at analyzing the causes of traffic accidents simply using data, this study constructed a database by analyzing every single DVR that stores the situation before and after the accident using relatively high-resolution video information to provide practical plans to reduce traffic accidents through statistical analysis.

  • The intelligent PVR(Personal Video Recorder) is an enhanced PVR that provides viewers with some advanced features as well as pause, instant replay, search and skip forward found in conventional PVRs. By embedding a home server into a PVR, it is possible for an intelligent PVR to provide a powerful web-based management user interface constructed using HTML, graphics and other features common to web-browsers. When applied to other embedded systems, web technologies offer graphical user interfaces which are user-friendly, inexpensive, cross-platform and network-ready. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce implementation of intelligent PVR which is control by internet. We present the architecture of an home- server with a simple but powerful web-based network interconnection.

The effect of semantic, syntactic and lexical factors on the menu selection performance for video cassette recorder operation

  • The product-user interface for consumer electronic products became complex due to the increased variety of functions corresponding to consumer needs. In this study, three types fo design improvement of the menu interface for a video cassette recorder is studied. Three modifications to an existing menu interface was designed using the semantic, the syntactic and the lexical design factors. A series of the validation experiments was performed to test the effect of the three types of task modifications. The results showed that performance time, number of errors and learning effect were improved for all task modification. It also showed that the performance improvement effect of the semantic factors was 8.8%, that of the syntactic factors was 5.9% and that of the lexical factors was 5.6% respectively. It was found out that the performance improvement effect of the semantic design factors were relatively more significant than the syntactic and the lexical design factors.

  • In this paper, we present a DirectShow-based retrieval and playback subsystem of DVR(Digital Video Recorder), which supports real-time playback of stored video data and synchronized playback among several video channel data. The effectiveness of out proposed design is verified through experiments with a DVR system implementing the proposed design.

  • DVR(Digital Video Recorder) system stores video inputs in compressed digital formats and retrieve them. DVR system has several advantages over traditional analog tape recorder system which are (1) improved real-time monitoring, recording and searching capability, and (2) other capabilities such as watermarking and remote monitoring through network. AVI format is the most popular format used for DVR systems. However, AVI format has drawbacks in recording and searching due to structural problem. Some vendors develop and use their own format, do not open the format to the public. In this paper, ESP format is proposed. ESP format solves the drawbacks of AVI format, and the advantages of AVI format apply to ESP format. Moreover, ESP format provides multistream recording/replay and event-recording. In result, ESP format enchances functionality of recording and searching in DVR system.

Automatic Cast-list Analysis System in Broadcasting Videos (방송 비디오 등장인물 자동 분석 시스템)

  • In this paper, we propose a system that can analyze appearance interval of casts by detecting and recognizing casts in broadcasting videos. The cast is one of the most important characteristics in broadcasting videos such as drama and sports. In this paper, we propose the ACAV(Automatic Cast-list Analysis in Videos) system that analyzes cast-list automatically in video. The ACAV system consists of FAGIS(FAce reGIStration) which registers detected faces into the face DB and FACOG(FAce reCOGnition) that analyses the cast-list in video sequence using the face DB. We evaluate performance of the ACAV system by comparing with FaceIt, one of the most well-known commercial systems for the cast-list analysis. The ACAV shows face detection and recognition rates of 84.3% and 75.7% that are about 30% and 27.5% higher than those of FaceIt, respectively. The ACAV system can be applied to mass broadcasting videos management system for broadcasters and video management system of PVR(Personal Video Recorder) and mobile phone for the public.
