  • Although the embedded network-engine is a demand of time, it is observed that up to this time the network-engines are not sufficient to control the input and output device for Video On Demand (VOD). In this paper we have proposed the wireless network-engine with the capability of controlling the input and output device.

  • Video On Demand servers generally require massive disk storages for storing many video data. Many researches have been done on the topics of efficient allocation of movies in disks. This paper, We describe efficient disk placement techniques and implement storage system with SCSI and PCI Bus interface for efficient data handling. This paper also proposes a logical zone reconstruction method for the SCAN data placement technique. The proposed method reconstructs physical zones into logical zones by split and merge operations.

  • Video-On-Demand servers use compression techniques to reduce the storage and bandwidth requirements. The compression techniques make the bit rates of compressed video data significantly variable from frame to frame. Consequently, Video-On-Demand servers with a constant bit rate retrieval can not maximize the utilization of resources. It is possible that when variable bit rate video data is stored, accurate description of the bit rate changes could be computed a priori. In this paper, I propose a buffer management scheme called MAX for Video-On-Demand server using variable bit rate continuous media. By caching and prefetching the data, MAX buffer management scheme reduces the variation of the compressed data and increases the number of clients simultaneously served and maximizes the utilization of system resources. Results of trace-driven simulations show the effectiveness of the scheme.

  • Scalable video coding can handle peer heterogeneity of P2P streaming applications, but there is still a lack of comprehensive studies on how to use it to improve video playback quality. In this paper we propose a capacity aware scalable video coding mechanism for P2P on demand streaming system. The proposed mechanism includes capacity based neighbor selection, adaptive data scheduling and streaming layer adjustment, and can enable each peer to select appropriate streaming layers and acquire streaming chunks with proper sequence, along with choosing specific peers to provide them. Simulation results show that the presented mechanism can decrease the system's startup and playback delay, and increase the video playback quality as well as playback continuity, and thus it provides a better quality of experience for users.

  • In this paper, we develop the system for audio volume equalization of video on demand(VoD) content and propose the solution for it. In recent years, there has been a steady increase in the number of VoD users in addition to linear channels. However, viewers ought to sit in an uncomfortable way, adjusting the volume intermittently while they are broadcasted. Sudden changes of volume occur between the broadcasting channels, the programs from the co-channel, or the linear channels and the VoDs. Especially, upsurged dissatisfaction from the televiewers has been found due to the unequalized volume when shifting between the linear channel and the VoD. In order to solve this problem, multilateral efforts were put forth, such as a system for keeping the volume at a certain level in digital broadcasting program has been legislated domestically. It leads success in equalizing linear channel volume. On contrary, too little notice has been taken for distorted volume problem of video on demand(VoD) content. In this paper, we developed and applied the volume equalization system into VoD content to achieve uniformization, a similar condition with linear channel(-24LKFS). This suggestion helped uneven current of volume which was in the stage -16 ~ -20LKFS to stable condition by lowering into the stage of -24LKFS. It also brought 20% increase in perspective of volume quality satisfaction level.

  • This paper illustrates not only the effectiveness of applying content quota system for on-demand video streaming platform, but also the effect of OTT regulation on copyright protection and cultural industry protection in a single market, focusing on the community's response to Netflix's entry into the EU market. Additionally, this paper examines on-demand video streaming services, growth of Netflix. The EU policy on the on-demand video streaming service market consists of 'portability' in the digital single market and content quota for copyright protection. In this paper, I analyze the market protection and the aspect of improving competitiveness of online streaming service industry. The EU is trying to protect the cultural industry and copyright protection in the region by applying and regulating the OTT business in content quota system, which has been applied only to European broadcasting companies.

  • In designing a video-on-demand (VoD) system, the major challenge may be how to reduce the channels concurrently used maintaining the client's waiting time. For this reason, the various architectures which integrate the multicast streams with the unicast streams were suggested in order to improve channel efficiency in recent years. In combining multicast with unicast, the ways to group the unicast channels together are important so that clients can share the multicast transmission channels. This paper proposes a hybrid video-on-demand system which gathers the unicast channels in new ways and shares multicast transmission channels efficiently by using dynamic channel allocation architecture. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed architecture in some case achieves performance gain of $551{\%}$ compared to existing architecture. This paper presents procedure of channel release and reuse, performance analysis, and simulation results of the dynamic channel allocation architecture.

  • VOD(Video On Demand) that provides streaming service according to the user's requirement in real time, consists of the video streaming server and the client system. Since it is very hard to apply the traditional server-client model that a server communicates with many clients through 1:1 connection to VOD system because it requires very high network bandwidth, many researches have been done to address this problem. Batching technique is one of VOD system based on Multicast that requires very small network bandwidth. However, the batching based VOD system has a limitation that it is very hard to provide VCR(Video Cassette Recorder) ability. In this paper, we propose a technique that reduces the required network bandwidth to provide VCR function by using the characteristic of MPEG, one of international video compression standard. In the proposed technique, a new video stream for VCR function is constructed with I pictures that is able to be decoded independently. The new video stream for VCR function is transmitted with the video stream for normal play together in Batching manner. The performance evaluation result shows that the proposed technique not only reduces the required network bandwidth and memory usage but also decreases the CPU usages.

  • The performance of video-on-demand(VOD) systems is known to be mainly dependent on a scheduling mechanism which they employ. Broadcast-based scheduling schemes have attracted a lot of attention as an efficient way of distributing popular videos to very large client populations. The main motivations of broadcasting scheduling mechanisms are that they scale up extremely well and they have very modest bandwidth requirements. This paper studies this issue and proposes a new broadcasting scheduling mechanism, named fast universal video dis-tribution(FUVD). FUVD scheme dynamically constructs a video broadcasting schedule in response to client requests, and broadcasts video seg-ments according to this schedule. This paper also evaluates the performance of FUVD on the basis of a simulation approach. The simulation results indicate that FUVD protocol shows a superior performance over UD, CBHD, and NPB in terms of the average response time.
