  • Although frame-based MPEG-4 video services have been successfully deployed since 2000, MPEG-4 video coding is now facing great competition in becoming a dominant player in the market. Object-based coding is one of the key functionalities of MPEG-4 video coding. Real-time object-based video encoding is also important for multimedia broadcasting for the near future. Object-based video services using MPEG-4 have not yet made a successful debut due to several reasons. One of the critical problems is the coding complexity of object-based video coding over frame-based video coding. Since a video object is described with an arbitrary shape, the bitstream contains not only motion and texture data but also shape data. This has introduced additional complexity to the decoder side as well as to the encoder side. In this paper, we have analyzed the current MPEG-4 video encoding tools and proposed efficient coding technologies that reduce the complexity of the encoder. Using the proposed coding schemes, we have obtained a 56 percent reduction in shape-coding complexity over the MPEG-4 video reference software (Microsoft version, 2000 edition).

  • Video coding technologies are progressively becoming more efficient and complex. The Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is a new state-of-the art video compression standard that is going to be a standard, as the next generation of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. To explore the future video coding technologies beyond the HEVC, numerous efficient methods have been adopted by the Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET). Since then, the next generation video coding standard named as VVC and its software model called VVC Test Model (VTM) have emerged. In this paper, several important coding features for motion estimation and motion compensation in the VVC standard is introduced and analyzed in terms of the performance. Improved coding tools introduced for ME and MC in VVC, can achieve much better and good balance between coding efficiency and coding complexity compared with the HEVC.

  • Currently, High-efficient video coding (HEVC) has become the most promising video coding technology. However, the implementation of HEVC in video streaming systems is restricted by factors such as cost, design complexity, and compatibility with existing systems. While HEVC is considering deploying to various systems with different reached methods, H264/AVC can be one of the best choices for current video streaming systems. This paper presents an adaptive method for manipulating video streams using video coding on an integrated circuit (IC) designed with a private network processor. The proposed system allows to transfer multimedia data from cameras or other video sources to client. For this work, a series of video or audio packages from the video source are forwarded to the designed IC via HDMI cable, called Tx transmitter. The Tx processes input data into a real-time stream using its own protocol according to the Real-Time Transmission Protocol for both video and audio, then Tx transmits output packages to the video client though internet. The client includes hardware or software video/audio decoders to decode the received packages. Tx uses H264/AVC or HEVC video coding to encode video data, and its audio coding is PCM format. By handling the message exchanges between Tx and the client, the transmitted session can be set up quickly. Output results show that transmission's throughput can be achieved about 50 Mbps with approximately 80 msec latency.

  • In recent years, due to its high efficiency and better performance, the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) has become the most common compression standard in the field of video coding. In this paper, the framework of HEVC is deeply analyzed, and an improved HEVC video coding algorithm based on all phase biorthogonal transform (APBT) is proposed, where APBT is utilized to replace the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and discrete sine transform (DST) in original HEVC standard. Based on the relationship between APBT and DCT, the integer APBT is deduced. To further improve the coding performance, an optimal HEVC video coding algorithm based on hybrid APBT is proposed. The coding performance of the proposed HEVC coding algorithm is improved without increasing the complexity. Experimental results show that compared with HEVC standard algorithm, the improved HEVC video coding algorithm based on hybrid APBT can improve the coding performance of chrominance components by about 0.3%.

  • In this paper, we propose a low bit-rate embedded video coding scheme with 3-D block partition in the wavelet domain. The proposed video coding scheme includes multi-level three dimensional dyadic wavelet decomposition, raster scanning within each subband, partitioning of blocks, and adaptive arithmetic entropy coding. Although the proposed video coding scheme is quite simple, it produces bit-streams with good features, including SNR scalability from the embedded nature. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed video coding scheme is quite competitive to other good wavelet-based video coders in the literature.

  • The Future Video Coding (FVC) is a new state of the art video compression standard that is going to standardize, as the next generation of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. The FVC standard applies newly designed block structure, which is called quadtree plus binary tree (QTBT) to improve the coding efficiency. Also, intra and inter prediction parts were changed to improve the coding performance when comparing to the previous coding standard such as HEVC and H.264/AVC. Experimental results shows that we are able to achieve the average BD-rate reduction of 25.46%, 38.00% and 35.78% for Y, U and V, respectively. In terms of complexity, the FVC takes about 14 times longer than the consumed time of HEVC encoder.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved distributed multi-view video coding method that is robust to illumination changes among different views. The use of view dependency is not effective for multi-view video because each view has different intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters. In this paper, a modified distributed multi-view coding method is presented that applies illumination compensation when generating side information. The proposed encoder codes DC values of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients separately by entropy coding. The proposed decoder can generate more accurate side information by using the transmitted DC coefficients to compensate for illumination changes. Furthermore, AC coefficients are coded with conventional entropy or channel coders depending on the frequency band. We found that the proposed algorithm is about 0.1~0.5 dB better than conventional algorithms.

  • After the Versatile Video Coding (VVC)/H.266 standard was completed, the Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET) began to investigate new technologies that could significantly increase coding gain for the next generation video coding standard. One direction is to investigate signal processing based tools, while the other is to investigate Neural Network based technology. Neural Network based Video Coding (NNVC) has not been studied previously, and this is the first trial of such an approach in the standard group. After two years of research, JVET produced the first common software called Neural Compression Software (NCS) with two NN-based in-loop filtering tools at the 27th meeting and began to maintain NN-based technologies for the common experiment. The coding performances of the two filters in NCS-1.0 are shown to be 8.71% and 9.44% on average in a random access scenario, respectively. All the material related to NCS can be found in the repository of the JVET. In this paper, we provide a brief overview and review of the NNVC activity studied in JVET in order to provide trend and insight for the new direction of video coding standard.

  • Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is the most recent video coding standard, which had been developed by Joint Video Expert Team (JVET). It can improve significant coding performance compared to the previous standard, namely High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Although VVC can achieve the powerful coding performance, it requires the tremendous computational complexity of VVC encoder. Especially, affine motion compensation (AMC) was adopted the block-based 4-parameter or 6-parameter affine prediction to overcome the limit of translational motion model while VVC require the cost of higher encoding complexity. In this paper, we proposed the early termination of AMC that determines whether the affine motion estimation for AMC is performed or not. Experimental results showed that the proposed method reduced the encoding complexity of affine motion estimation (AME) up to 16% compared to the VVC Test Model 17 (VTM17).

최근 국제 표준화 기구인 JCT-3V(Joint Collaborative Team on 3D Video Coding Extension Development)에서는 다시점 및 3차원 비디오 영상을 효율적으로 부호화할 수 있는 기술에 대하여 표준화가 진행되고 있다.
