The purpose of this study is to compare efficiency of broad spectrum LEDs ($VALO^{(R)}$, Ultradent, USA) with conventional LED curing lights ($Elipar^{TM}$ Freelight 2, 3M ESPE, USA) using a microhardness test. The light curing units used were $VALO^{(R)}$ in three different modes and $Elipar^{TM}$ Freelight 2. The exposure time was used according to the manufacturer's instructions. After cured resin specimens were stored in physiological saline at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, microhardness was measured using Vickers microhardness tester. The microhardness of upper and lower sides of the specimens were analyzed separately by the ANOVA method (Analysis of Variance) with a significance level set at 5%. At upper side of resin specimens, an increased microhardness was observed in the broad spectrum LED curing light unit with a high power mode for 4 seconds and plasma emulation mode for 20 seconds (p < 0.05). However, at the lower side of resin specimens, there were no significant differences in microhardness between broad spectrum LED curing light unit and conventional LED curing light unit.

In this study, the metallurgical analysis and mechanical property measurement have been performed to investigate the effect of long-term thermal aging on the microstructural evolution in the fusion boundary region between weld metal and low alloy steel in dissimilar metal welds. A representative dissimilar weld mock-up made of Alloy 690-Alloy 152-A533 Gr. B was fabricated and aged at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2,750 hours. The microstructural characterization was conducted mainly near in a weld root region by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. And the mechanical properties were measured with Vickers microhardness test and nanoindentation method. A steep gradient was shown in the chemical composition profile across the interface between A533 Gr. B and Alloy 152. Type-II boundaries were found in weld side of DMW and the hardness was the highest at the narrow zone between Type-II boundary and fusion boundary.
In PECVD(Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) process, titanium nitride is thin and its adhesion is poor for the protective coatings. Therefore it has been studied that intermediate layer forms between substrate and TiN thin film. Using R.F. plasma nitriding, nitride layer was first formed, then TiN thin film coated by PECVD. The chemical composition of the coatings has been characterized using AES, EDS and their crystallographic structure by means of XRD. Mechanical properties such as microhardness and film adhesion have also been determined by vickers hardness test, scratch test and indentation test. As a result, there was no difference in chemical composition and structure between the TiN deposition only and the composite of TiN deposition on nitrided steel. It was found that nitrided substrate increased the hardness of TiN coatings and was beneficial in preventing the plastic deformation in the substrate. Therefore the effective load bearing capacity of the TiN coatings on nitrided steel was increased and their adhesion was improved as well. According to the results of this study, the processes that lead to the formation of composite layers characterized by good working properties, i.e., high microhardness, adhesion and resistance to deformation.

A series experiments were performed to evaluate mechanical behavior of non-oxide boride type ceramics formed on the AISI 1040 plain carbon steel. Boronizing was performed in a slurry salt bath consisting of borax, boric acid, and ferro-silicon at $950^{\circ}C$ for 2-6h. The AISI 1040 steel used as substrate material was containing 0.4%C, 0.13%Si, 0.65%Mn, 0.02%P, 0.014%S. The presence of non-oxide boride type ceramics $Fe_2B $ and FeB formed on the surface of steel was confirmed by metallographic technique and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The hardness of borides measured via Vickers indenter with a load of 2N reached a microhardness of up to 1800 DPN. The hardness of unborided steel was 185 DPN. The fracture toughness of borides measured by means of Vickers indenter with a load of 10N was about 2.30 MPa.$m^{1/2}$. The thickness of boride layers ranged from 72$\mu\textrm{m}$ to 145$\mu\textrm{m}$. Boride layers have a columnar morphology.
PURPOSE. The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate, for the first time, the effects of addition of titania nanotubes ($n-TiO_2$) to poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) on mechanical properties of PMMA denture base. MATERIALS AND METHODS. $TiO_2$ nanotubes were prepared using alkaline hydrothermal process. Obtained nanotubes were assessed using FESEM-EDX, XRD, and FT-IR. For 3 experiments of this study (fracture toughness, three-point bending flexural strength, and Vickers microhardness), 135 specimens were prepared according to ISO 20795-1:2013 (n of each experiment=45). For each experiment, PMMA was mixed with 0% (control), 2.5 wt%, and 5 wt% nanotubes. From each $TiO_2$:PMMA ratio, 15 specimens were fabricated for each experiment. Effects of $n-TiO_2$ addition on 3 mechanical properties were assessed using Pearson, ANOVA, and Tukey tests. RESULTS. SEM images of $n-TiO_2$ exhibited the presence of elongated tubular structures. The XRD pattern of synthesized $n-TiO_2$ represented the anatase crystal phase of $TiO_2$. Moderate to very strong significant positive correlations were observed between the concentration of $n-TiO_2$ and each of the 3 physicomechanical properties of PMMA (Pearson's P value ${\leq}.001$, correlation coefficient ranging between 0.5 and 0.9). Flexural strength and hardness values of specimens modified with both 2.5 and 5 wt% $n-TiO_2$ were significantly higher than those of control ($P{\leq}.001$). Fracture toughness of samples reinforced with 5 wt% $n-TiO_2$ (but not those of 2.5% $n-TiO_2$) was higher than control (P=.002). CONCLUSION. Titania nanotubes were successfully introduced for the first time as a means of enhancing the hardness, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of denture base PMMA.

Recently some studies have shown that low light intensity followed by final cure at high light intensity may result in a smaller marginal gap and may be no negative effect on material properties. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the initial cure with low intensity on the shear bond strength of dentin and the microhardness of composite resin. Twenty intact bovine teeth were prepared for shear bond strength test and each tooth sectioned to three specimens. The specimens were randomly divided into three groups according to the light intensity and curing time as follows; Group I. $450mmW/cm^2$ 40sec Group II. $300mmW/cm^2$ 20sec and $600mmW/cm^2$ 20sec Gropu III. $250mmW/cm^2$ 20sec and $450mmW/cm^2$ 20sec. Samples of each group were restored with light-cured composite resin after dentin bonding and then the shear bond strength of each specimen were measured using universal testing machine. Ten resin specimens per group were prepared. After 24 hours, the Vickers microhardness value was measured at the top and bottom surfaces. The result are as follows; 1. Mean value of low initial intensity groups(II, III) were higher than the control group(I) in shear bond strength, but no significant difference could be found. 2. No significant difference could be found between three groups in microhardness.

Microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPD II) is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder form of primordial dwarfism, caused by mutations in the pericentrin gene. The purpose of the study was to examine the clinical and radiological features, physicochemical properties and microstructures of the tooth affected with MOPD II. The mandibular 2nd molar was collected from the MOPD II patient. Micro-computerized tomography, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry and Vickers microhardness analysis were performed on the MOPD II and the normal control. The morphology of the MOPD II tooth appeared to have malformed pulp and root and showed a small size. The mineral density measurement showed that the MOPD II tooth had similar scores in the enamel, but lower scores in the root 1/2 and apical dentin compared to the normal control. The microhardness values were smaller in the cusp enamel, root 1/2 dentin and apical dentin of the MOPD II compared to the normal control. In this study, the dental characteristics and the physicochemical properties of a tooth affected with MOPD II were analyzed to improve understanding of the oral manifestations of the disease and to assist in proper dental treatment by identifying precautions.
Dental caries is the most common oral disease. There are many factors contributing to its development, but complete understanding and prevention are not fully known. However, it is possible to remineralize the early enamel curious lesion by fluoride containing remineralization solution. Recently the pH-cycling model has been used to examine the effect of fluoride solution on remineralization of artificial caries in vitro as it can closely simulate the conditions encountered in vivo within a carefully controlled environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the remineralizing effects of supersaturated buffer solutions under pH-cycling model. The specimen with 3mm-diameter was made using mature bovine incisors which has no caries and has sound enamel surface. Early curious lesions were produced by suspending each specimens into demineralization solution at pH 5.0 for 33 hours and the specimen whose surface hardness value ranged from 25 to 45 VHN were used. The pH cycling treatment regimen consisted of 5 min soaks of three treatment solutions four times per days for 15 days and the continuous cycling of demineralization and remineralization were carried out for 15 days. Following the pH-cycling treatment regimen, the specimens' surface microhardness were measured by the Vickers hardness test (VHN) and analyzed by ANOVA and Duncan's multiple-range test. 1. The surface microhardness value of supersaturated solution, Senstime, and Gagline groups were increased after pH cycling, and that of supersaturated solution was significantly Increased compared to saline group(P<0.05). 2. The surface remineralization effect of fluoride containing solutions was accelerated by saliva under pH-cycling mode 3. The pH cycling model was considered appropriate to mimic the intra-oral pH changes when evaluating demineralization and remineralization in vitro. Under the results of above study, salivary remineralization effect can be improved by fluoride containing remineralization solution. The pH-cycling model was considered appropriate to mimic the intra-oral pH changes when evaluating demineralization and remineralization in vitro.
PURPOSE. This study was to evaluate the effect of the solution temperature on the mechanical properties of dualcure resin cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS. For the study, five dual-cure resin cements were chosen and light cured. To evaluate the effect of temperature on the specimens, the light-cured specimens were immersed in deionized water at three different temperatures (4, 37 and $60^{\circ}C$) for 7 days. The control specimens were aged in a $37^{\circ}C$ dry and dark chamber for 24 hours. The mechanical properties of the light-cured specimens were evaluated using the Vickers hardness test, three-point bending test, and compression test, respectively. Both flexural and compressive properties were evaluated using a universal testing machine. The data were analyzed using a two way ANOVA with Tukey test to perform multiple comparisons (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS. After immersion, the specimens showed significantly different microhardness, flexural, and compressive properties compared to the control case regardless of solution temperatures. Depending on the resin brand, the microhardness difference between the top and bottom surfaces ranged approximately 3.3-12.2%. Among the specimens, BisCem and Calibra showed the highest and lowest decrease of flexural strength, respectively. Also, Calibra and Multilink Automix showed the highest and lowest decrease of compressive strength, respectively compared to the control case. CONCLUSION. The examined dual-cure resin cements had compatible flexural and compressive properties with most methacrylate-based composite resins and the underlying dentin regardless of solution temperature. However, the effect of the solution temperature on the mechanical properties was not consistent and depended more on the resin brand.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of shade and thickness of resin-nanoceramic CAD-CAM block (RNB) on the microhardness of dual-cured resin cement, as well as to measure the number of photons transmitted through RNBs of different thicknesses and colors. One dual-cured resin cement was used to prepare resin cement specimens. Resin cement specimens were light-cured for 40 seconds through 3 shades (A1, A2, A3 in HT (high translucency) and LT (low translucency) respectively) and four thicknesses (1, 2, 3, 4 mm) of RNB specimens. Vickers microhardness measurements of resin cement specimens were performed using a Vickers hardness tester. The light transmission of RNB specimens was measured using a spectrometer (SpectroPro-500, Acton Research, Acton, MA, U.S.A.), and the translucency parameter was calculated using the CIEL*a*b* system. Data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test. There was a significant decrease of microhardness of resin cement specimen with an overlay of 4 mm of RNB thickness and A3 shade in comparison to A1 and 1 mm, respectively (p<0.05). The translucency parameter values and light transmission of RNBs tested differed significantly, according to the thicknesses of the specimen (p<0.05). Light transmission is decreased with increase in the thicknesses of RNBs. Shade A1 transmitted more light than darker blocks. A decrease in microhardness of resin cement specimens was observed with increasing thickness and shade (A1 to A3) of RNBs.
