We analyzed the wear characterization of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics according to the amount of added $SiO_2$ nanocolloid. The test specimen was prepared by hot-press sintering at 35 MPa and 2123 K in an $N_2$ gas atmosphere for 1 h. A wear test was performed with a block-on-ring tester, and the test conditions were as follows: (1) the ring with a diameter of 35 mm had a rotational speed of 50 rpm; (2) the load was 9.8 N; and (3) the temperature was $25^{\circ}C$. The test results show that $Si_3N_4$ ceramics have a friction coefficient of about 1.0 and a wear loss of about 0.02 mm. Of the specimens used this study, the test specimen with 1.3 wt% of added $SiO_2$ nanocolloid has the best wear resistance because it has the lowest friction coefficient and the smallest wear loss. This specimen also has the highest Vickers hardness and bending strength. In this study, the friction coefficient is inversely proportional to the hardness and bending strength.
The effects of the addition of either monoclinic $ZrO_2(pure)$ or tetragonal $ZrO_2$ containing 5.35wt% $Y_2O_3(Y-TZP)$ on the mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics were investigated. The addition of $ZrO_2$(m) and Y-TZP increased sintered density of $Al_2O_3$. The Vickers hardness also increased as the volume fraction of Y-TZP increased going through a maximum at 20wt%. The hardness of the specimens was found to be dependent on the sintered density. The higher volume fraction of either $ZrO_2(m)$ or Y-TZP resulted in the higher fracture toughness of the composite was. This result may be taken as evidence that toughening of $Al_2O_3$ can be achieved by not only the transformation toughening but microcrack toughening of $ZrO_2$. The thermal shock property for $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ composites was improved by increasing the volume fraction of monoclinic $ZrO_2(pure)$. The grain size increased as the volume fraction of $ZrO_2$ did.

Electrical, mechanical and sinterability properties of yttria-stabilized zirconia doped with 5.35wt% $Y_2$O$_3$(Y$_2$O$_3$- containing stabilized zirconia : YSZ) were studied as a function of $Al_2$O$_3$, CoO, Fe$_2$O$_3$ and MnO$_2$ addition. The ratio of monoclinic phase to tetragonal phase was changed by the addition of $Al_2$O$_3$, CoO, Fe$_2$O$_3$ and MnO$_2$ to 8.00 wt% and sintered density decreased with increasing $Al_2$O$_3$, CoO, Fe$_2$O$_3$ and MnO$_2$ addition. Fracture toughness increased with the increase of monoclinic to tetragonal phase ratio and was maximum at about 18%. When transition metals such as CoO, Fe$_2$O$_3$ or MnO$_2$ was added more than 1.5 wt%, the electrical conductivity of YSZ increased. But $Al_2$O$_3$ hardly affected the electrical conductivity of YSZ. The addition of $Al_2$O$_3$, CoO, Fe$_2$O$_3$ and MnO$_2$ into YSZ resulted in the more complex behavior of fracture toughness and hardness variation and the specimen with 1.5wt%-Fe$_2$O$_3$, 3.0wt%-Al$_2$O$_3$ and 1.5wt%-CoO showed the monoclinic to tetragonal phase ratio of 18% and the highest toughness of 10.8 MPa.m$^{1}$2/ and Vickers hardness of 1201 kgf/mm$^2$.

Effects of Na2SiO3 concentration added into 0.1 M NaOH + 0.05 M NaF solution on the formation behavior and properties of PEO films on AZ91 Mg alloy were investigated under 1200 Hz of alternating current (AC) by voltage-time curves, in-situ observation of arc generation behavior and measurements of film thickness, surface roughness and micro vickers hardness. In the absence of Na2SiO3 in the 0.1 M NaOH + 0.05 M NaF solution, about 4 ㎛ thick PEO film was formed within 1 min and then PEO film did not grow but white spots were formed by local burning. Addition of Na2SiO3 up to 0.2 M caused more increased formation voltage and growth of PEO film with uniform generation of arcs. Addition of Na2SiO3 from 0.2 M to 0.4 M showed nearly the same voltage-time behavior and uniform arc generation. Addition of Na2SiO3 more than 0.5 M resulted in a decrease of formation voltage and non-uniform arc generation due to local burning. PEO film growth rate increased with increasing added Na2SiO3 concentration but maximum PEO film thickness was limited by local burning if added Na2SiO3 concentration is higher than 0.5 M. Surface roughness of PEO film increased with increasing added Na2SiO3 concentration and appeared to be proportional to the PEO film thickness. PEO film hardness increased with increasing added Na2SiO3 concentration and reached a steady-state value of about 930 HV at more than 0.5 M of added Na2SiO3 concentration.

We report structural, mechanical, and thermal properties of diecast ADC12 aluminum alloys characterized using synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, thermal conductivity (λ), Vickers hardness (Hv), and stress-strain measurements. We also studied the effect of post-annealing performed in a vacuum atmosphere on the mechanical properties of diecast ADC12 alloys. EDX and XRD results revealed that Al2Cu and AlCu3 grains are formed, well dispersed in Al base and highly crystalline. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 307.9 ± 9.1 MPa and elongation of 2.98 ± 0.62 % were estimated. λ was 129.3 ± 0.27 W/m·K and Hv was approximately 130. Both values were significantly higher than the reported values. At annealing temperatures ranging from 25 to 200℃, UTS and Hv values remained constant, while as the annealing temperature increased to 500℃, these values gradually decreased. This is because stabilization of the microstructure improves toughness and ductility.

Non-ferrous metals, widely used in the mechanical industry, are difficult to machine, particularly by drilling and tapping. Since non-ferrous metals have a strong tendency to adhere to the cutting tool, the tool life is greatly deteriorated. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) is one of the promising candidates to improve the performance and life of cutting tool due to their low frictional property. In this study, a sacrificial DLC layer is applied on the hard nitride coated drill tool to improve the durability. The DLC coatings are fabricated by controlling the acceleration voltage of the linear ion source in the range of 0.6~1.8 kV. As a result, the optimized hardness(20 GPa) and wear resistance(1.4 x 10-8 ㎣/N·m) were obtained at the 1.4 kV. Then, the optimized DLC coating is applied as an sacrificial layer on the hard nitride coating to evaluate the performance and life of cutting tool. The Vickers hardness of the composite coatings were similar to those of the nitride coatings (AlCrN, AlTiSiN), but the friction coefficients were significantly reduced to 0.13 compared to 0.63 of nitride coatings. The drilling test were performed on S55C plate using a drilling machine at rotation speed of 2,500 rpm and penetration rate of 0.25 m/rev. The result showed that the wear width of the composite coated drills were 200 % lower than those of the AlCrN, AlTiSiN coated drills. In addition, the cutting forces of the composite coated drills were 13 and 15 % lower than that of AlCrN, AlTiSiN coated drills, respectively, as it reduced the aluminum clogging. Finally, the application of the DLC sacrificial layer prevents initial chipping through its low friction property and improves drilling quality with efficient chip removal.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of soft-start light curing on contraction stress and hardness of composite resin. Composite resin mold was cured using the one-step continuous curing method with three difference light sources; conventional halogen light curing for 40 seconds at $400\;mw/cm^2$, plasma arc light curing for 6 seconds at $1300\;mW/cm^2$ and LED light curing for 10 seconds at $7The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of soft-start light curing on contraction stress and hardness of composite resin. Composite resin mold was cured using the one-step continuous curing method with three difference light sources; conventional halogen light curing for 40 seconds at . For the soft-start curing method ; 2 seconds light exposure at $650\;mW/cm^2$ followed by 3 seconds at $1300\;mW/cm^2$ and exponential increase with 5 seconds followed by 10 seconds at $700\;mW/cm^2$ were used. Contraction stress was measured using strain gauge method and Vickers hardness was measured 24 hours after polymerization at the top and bottom of specimens. Resin-acrylic interfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results of present study can be summarized as follows: 1. Contraction stresses at 10 min after polymerization were significantly reduced with the soft-start curing both in plasma and LED light sources(P<0.05). 2. Plasma light curing with soft-start resulted in not only the lowest contraction stress, but also the lowest hardness(P<0.05) 3. LED light curing with soft-start showed lower contraction stress than the one-step continuous halogen and LED light curing(P<0.05). 4. Microhardness of specimens cured by LED light with soft-start was equivalent to that of cured by the one-step continuous halogen and LED light(P>0.05). 5. Curing by LED light with soft-start and conventional halogen light resulted in better marginal sealing than plasma light and one-step LED light curing.
The Ar/Ar-$H_2$ plasma method was applied to reduce oxides and refine metals of V, Ta and B. In addition, the high temperature chemical reaction in Ar plasma and of the refining reaction in the Ar-(20%)$H_2$ plasma were analyzed. The crude V of 96wt% purity was obtained at the ratio of $C/V_{2}O_{5}=4.50$ by the Ar plasma reduction grade and the maximum reduction was obtained at $C/V_{2}O_{5}=4.50$ due to the $O_{2}$ loss from the thermal decomposition of vanadium oxide. In the Ar-(20%)$H_2$ plasma refining, the metallic V of 99.2wt% was produced at the ratio of $C/V_{2}O_{5}=4.40$. It was considered that a main refining reaction resulted from the chemical reaction between the residual carbon and residual oxygen. The metallic Ta of 99.8wt% was obtained at the ratio of $C/Ta_{2}O_{5}=5.10$ in a Ar plasma reduction and the Oz loss from the thermal decomposition of tantalum pentoxide did not take place. The deoxidation reaction was more significant than the decarburization reaction in the Ar-(20%)$H_2$ plasma refining and the metallic Ta of 99.9wt% was produced within the range of $C/Ta_{2}O_{5}$ ratio of 4.50 to 5.10. The Vickers hardness of Ta in the above mentioned range was about 220Hv due to the decrease in a residual oxygen by the deoxidation reaction. On the other hand, C is no suitable agent for the reduction of $B_{2}O_{3}$ by the Ar and Ar-$H_2$ plasma. But Fe-B-Si alloy was produced with the reduction of $B_{2}O_{3}$ in the melt when Fe, C, $B_{2}O_{3}$, and ferroboron mixtures were melted by the high frequency induction melting.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of shade and thickness of resin-nanoceramic CAD-CAM block (RNB) on the microhardness of dual-cured resin cement, as well as to measure the number of photons transmitted through RNBs of different thicknesses and colors. One dual-cured resin cement was used to prepare resin cement specimens. Resin cement specimens were light-cured for 40 seconds through 3 shades (A1, A2, A3 in HT (high translucency) and LT (low translucency) respectively) and four thicknesses (1, 2, 3, 4 mm) of RNB specimens. Vickers microhardness measurements of resin cement specimens were performed using a Vickers hardness tester. The light transmission of RNB specimens was measured using a spectrometer (SpectroPro-500, Acton Research, Acton, MA, U.S.A.), and the translucency parameter was calculated using the CIEL*a*b* system. Data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test. There was a significant decrease of microhardness of resin cement specimen with an overlay of 4 mm of RNB thickness and A3 shade in comparison to A1 and 1 mm, respectively (p<0.05). The translucency parameter values and light transmission of RNBs tested differed significantly, according to the thicknesses of the specimen (p<0.05). Light transmission is decreased with increase in the thicknesses of RNBs. Shade A1 transmitted more light than darker blocks. A decrease in microhardness of resin cement specimens was observed with increasing thickness and shade (A1 to A3) of RNBs.

Two kinds of welding methods were carried out for 22APU stainless steel, one is a Laser welding and the other is the TIG welding. In this case, difference of corrosion characteristics of welded zone with two welding methods mentioned above was investigated with electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, polarization curves and cyclic voltammogram etc.. Vickers hardness of all welded zone (WM:Weld Metal, HAZ:Heat Affected Zone, BM:Base Metal)in the case of Laser welding showed a relatively higher value than those of TIG welding. Futhermore their corrosion current density in all welding zone were also observed with a lower value compared to TIG welding. In particular corrosion current density of BM regardless of welding method indicated the lowest value than those of other welding zone. Intergranular corrosion was not observed at the corroded surface of all welding zone in the case of Laser welding, however it was observed at WM and HAZ with TIG welding, which is suggested that chromiun depletion due to forming of chromium carbide appears to WM and HAZ which is in the range of sensitization temperature. Therefore their zone can easily be corroded with more active anode. Consequently we can see that corrosion resistance of all welding zone of 22APU stainless steel can apparently be improved by using of Laser welding.
