Pure WC powders which does not include a binder phase were consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process at 1600~185$0^{\circ}C$ for 0~30 min under 50 MPa. Microstructure alid mechanical properties of binderless WC prepared by SPS were investigated. With increasing sintering temperature, sintered density and Vickers hardness of binderless WC increased. The fracture toughness of binderless WC was 7~15 MPa $m^{1/2}$ depending on the sintered density and decreased with increasing the Vickers hardness. It is found that the binderless WC prepared by SPS at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 min under 50 MPa showed nearly full densification with fine-grained structure and revealed excellent mechanical properties of high hardness (~HV 2400) and considerably high fracture toughness (~7 MPa $m^{1/2}$).

The advantage of plasma-sprayed coating is their good resistance against thermal shock due to the porous state of the coated layer with a consequently low Youngs modules. However, the existence of many pores with a bimodal distribution and a laminar structure in the coating reduces coating strength and oxidation protection of the base metals. In order to counteract these problems, there have been many efforts to obtain dense coatings by spraying under low pressure or vacuum and by controlling particle size and morphology of the spraying materials. The aim of the present study is to survey the effects of the HIP treatment between 1100 and 130$0^{\circ}C$ on plasma-sprayed oxide coating of A1$_2$O$_3$, A1$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$ on the metal substrate (type C18N10T stainless steel). These effects were characterized by phase identification, Vickers hardness measurement, and tensile test before and after HIPing, These results show that high-pressure treatment has an advantage for improving adhesive strength and Vickers hardness of plasma- sprayed coatings.

The objective of this research is to analyze the fracture toughness of pure and silica co-doped yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) bioceramics containing 0.1 and 0.2 wt.% of alumina, and sintered at a temperature of $1500^{\circ}C$. Because of the relatively easy preparation of the test specimens and the high speed of testing, the Vickers indentation fracture (VIF) technique is more frequently used to evaluate the fracture toughness of biomaterials and hard biological tissues. The Young's modulus and hardness values were obtained by means of nanoindentation and indentation methods. The fracture toughness values of 3Y-TZP bioceramics were calculated and analyzed using 15 equations related to the VIF technique, and loadings of 49.03 and 196.13 N with a Vickers diamond. For validation, the results were compared with fracture toughness values obtained by the single-edge laser-notch beam (SELNB) method with an almost atomically sharp laser-machined initial notch.
The current work investigates the effects of nucleation heat treatments, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a novel silicate glass in $Li_2O-BaO-SiO_2$ system with 1 mol% $P_2O_5$ as nucleating agent. As-cast glass was exposed to nucleation heat treatments at $490-550^{\circ}C$ for 1-3 h. The microstructural examination was performed by SEM/EDS. The highest Vickers microhardness was determined to be 650 Hv for the sample heat treated at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The increase in the nucleation time also affected Vickers microhardness and the highest one was determined to be 600 Hv after nucleation for 3 h. The fracture toughness, $K_{IC}$ reached $2.51MPa.m^{1/2}$ after nucleation at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The nucleation temperatures had a more pronounced effect on the fracture toughnesses in comparison to nucleation times. The indentation toughness data was used to determine Weibull parameters from Ln ln [1/(1-P)]-$lnK_{IC}$ plots. Weibull modulus, m of the samples nucleated at 500, 510, 530, $550^{\circ}C$ for 1h. and $540^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. were determined similarly to be 3.8, 3.5, 4.7 and 3.9, respectively. The rest of the samples indicated higher Weibull moduli, which may be attributed to the formations of microcracks due to the mismatch in between newly formed crystals and remaining glassy matrix.

We present a new procedure to evaluate the residual life of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel by reversible magnetic permeability. The method is based on the existence of the first harmonics in the differential magnetization around the coercive force. The apparatus is based on the detection of the voltage induced in a coil using a lock-in amplifier tuned to a frequency of the exciting one. Results obtained for the first harmonics and Vickers hardness on the aged samples show that the peak interval of reversible permeability and Vickers hardness decrease as ageing time increases. The correlation between Vickers hardness and the peak interval of the reversible permeability could well be used to evaluate the residual life of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel, nondestructively.

In this study, machine learning models are proposed to predict the Vickers hardness of AlSi10Mg alloys fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). A total of 113 utilizable datasets were collected from the literature. The hyperparameters of the machine-learning models were adjusted to select an accurate predictive model. The random forest regression (RFR) model showed the best performance compared to support vector regression, artificial neural networks, and k-nearest neighbors. The variable importance and prediction mechanisms of the RFR were discussed by Shapley additive explanation (SHAP). Aging time had the greatest influence on the Vickers hardness, followed by solution time, solution temperature, layer thickness, scan speed, power, aging temperature, average particle size, and hatching distance. Detailed prediction mechanisms for RFR are analyzed using SHAP dependence plots.
In this study, a monolithic MoSi2 matrix reinforced with 20 vol% SiC particles, a SiC/MoSi2 composite matrix reinforced with 20 vol% ZrO2 particles, and a ZrO2/MoSi2 composite were fabricated using hot press sintering at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under a pressure of 30 MPa. The Vickers hardness and sliding wear resistance of the monolithic MoSi2, ZrO2/MoSi2, and SiC/MoSi2 composite were investigated at room temperature. A wear behavior test was carried out using a disk-type wear tester with a silicon nitride ball. The ZrO2/MoSi2 composite showed an average Vickers hardness value and excellent wear resistance compared with the monolithic MoSi2 and SiC/MoSi2 composite at room temperature.

This study presents the optimal hardness range for a coated layer of a workpiece when the diamond tool cuts the corner-cube pattern on the coated plates using an ultra-precision diamond-turning machine. Two kinds of coated plates, which have the hardness range of 211~328 Vickers hardness, are used on the first experiments. The form accuracy for the corner-cube pattern could be achieved through the following experiments using the accumulated thin copper plates in second experiments, having optimal 265~275 Vickers hardness based on the basic first experiments without tool wear. When the number of machining adjustments was increased to seven times, having machining depth was reduced successively in second experiment, a fine surface could be achieved without tool wear.

A precision wear tester is developed to measure the wear rate of a high friction and high pressurized cylinder. The tester consists of indentor system and optical measuring system. The indentor system has two diamond indentors so that they make indents on the inside of the cylinder by using compressed air system. The X-Y-$\theta$ stage of the measuring system can trace the positions of the indents and can measure the diameters of them. The variation of the diameter of each indent after test is converted into the wear rate.
Vickers microhardness for polished Cu specimen has been measured by conventional and new methods. The conventional microhardness was measured by observing the diagonal of indentation after the load was removed. Whereas, the new method for microhardness was obtained by measuring the penetration depth of indenter into the specimen under the load. As the applied load was increased, the microhardness obtained by new method was increased. When the applied load was in the range of 5mN to 80mN, the rate of elastic to total depth of indenter was about 6% and the calculated depth of rounded indenter was 0.07$\mu\textrm{m}$. The difference in microhardness measured by two different methods such as conventional and new methods can be explained in terms of the elastic deformation of specimen, the shape of practical indenter and pile up of material.
