Sand scorpions are nocturnal animals to mostly use tactile senses to detect their prey. It has been reported that sand scorpions have high vibration sensitivity for their prey-localizing behavior. We tested vibration experiments in the sand with microphone sensors to model the sand scorpion's behavior and a time-difference model was applied to find the direction of a vibration source. Using the information of the arrival time of the vibration signal to reach each leg position, we can find the location of the vibration source.
The characteristics of vibration and sound signals which occurs at the driving system of electric train are investigated in this study since the vibration of driving system is one of the main sources of vibration and sound in electric train. The vibration signals are changed its signal patterns during the transmission from the source to passengers due to noise or several unknown factors. To avoid the complexity of actual signals of electric train, signals from experimental apparatus of motor/gear driving system are analyzed to find the appropriate method of analysis and to characterize the signal patterns. The used methods are waterfall diagram, transfer function and modal analysis. The results shows that the vibration signals are usually originated from motor bearing and gear meshing and these signals are transmitted to bottom or bogie. Also, the sound signal is similar to the vibration of bottom or bogie, but it is not so clear to figure out the source of vibration.

Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) algorithm was applied to sound source positioning. Using measured microphones signal, difference of distance from source to sensors were estimated by TDOA and speed of sound, and taken by navigational measurements. And iteration procedures were induced to find the actual source location. For the case of stationary and moving sound source, validation test were performed in the anechoic room. In the stationary case, the error of positioning is less then 1.3% in length scale, and it could be seen proper filtering processes were required in the application of moving sound source.

Measurement techniques for in-duct acoustic source parameters can be classified into the direct method and the load method, according to whether it utilizes an extra external source or not. It is reported that the load methods yield the negative source resistance and the purpose of this paper is to clarify that the time-varying nature of the source is the main cause of this physically implausible result. For this purpose, the direct and load methods for measuring the source characteristics of a simplified fluid machine are simulated using the time domain numerical analysis. In the numerical simulations, the method of characteristics is employed and the source characteristics are calculated from the resultant data. It is shown that the load method results in negative source resistance for some frequencies, whereas the direct method yields positive values for all frequencies considered. It is found that the result of load method is quite sensitive to the change of cylinder pressure or valve profile in contrast to the direct method.

An important factor of vibration test using MAST(multi axial simulation table) system is the reliance of input excitation source. Generally the generation of input excitation source is obtained by the measured data on special road in proving ground. The measured data on special road have more exciting energy than the data of real fields, therefore the time and expense for test can be reduced. But the magnitude of input excitation source must be defined by comparison with the excited energy on real field. The object of this paper makes the data base of domestic roads for the definition of input excitation source which is obtained by the measured data on special road in proving ground. These real field data on domestic roads are analyzed by the power spectral density and interrelationship index.

Pressure pulsation of exciting sources that generally occurs on the piping system connected to the discharge of BFP(boiler feed water pump) in power plants causes wave reflection, wave interference, resonance, standing wave and so on. But if the operating speed of the pump is changed, the state of the noise and vibration can be done because characteristics of the exciting source are changed. This paper is to investigate the cause of the noise and vibration occurring on the piping system when the operating speed of BFP is down in accordance with lowering of the power generation. It is approached to two points of view ; Firstly, it is examined whether the pulsation source impacts on the shell mode vibration that vibrates radially across the cross-section of the pipe. But it doesn't affect the shell mode as much as the resonance occurs. Secondly, to find the relation between the pulsation source and the acoustic mode of the piping system, analysis for the piping system by indirect BEM(boundary element method) is carried out. Therefore it is investigated that the mechanism of the noise and vibration relates with acoustic mode of the piping system.

A case history is presented pertaining to high frequency piping vibration and noise caused by globe valve in the spent fuel pool cooling system of nuclear power plant. Frequency analyses were performed on the system to diagnose the problem and develop a solution to reduce the piping vibration and noise. The source of the high frequency and noise energy was traced to the globe valve located immediately downstream of the centrifugal pump by performing valve throttling test. Measurements of vibration and noise are presented to show that the high frequency vibration and noise amplitude was dependent upon the valve disc position and flow rate. Strouhal vortex shedding frequencies were generated at the exit of the globe valve which exited structural resonance of valve disc and amplified the high frequency vibration and noise. The problem was identified as an interaction between the flow inside globe valve and the valve disc structure. Attempts to reduce the vibration and noise amplitudes of the piping system were successfully achieved by the modification of guide-disc diameter and disc-edge figure The valve disc was replaced by an alternative to eliminate the source of the harmful high frequency vibration and noise.
Earthborne vibrations are induced by construction operation such as pile driving, roadbed compaction, and blasting and also by transit activities such as truck and trains. The earthborne vibration creates the stress waves traveling outward from the source and can structurally damage nearby buildings and structures in the forms of direct damage to structure and damage due to dynamic settlement. The wave propagation characteristics depends on impact or vibration energy, distance from the source, and soil characteristics. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review on the mechanistic of earthborne vibration and the current practice of vibration control and mitigation measures. The paper describes the state of knowledge in the areas of: (1) mechanics of earthborne vibration, (2) damage mechanism by earthborne vibration, (3) calculation, prediction of ground vibration, (4) the criteria of vibration limits, (5) vibration mitigation measures and their performance, and (6) the current practice of vibration control and mitigation measures.

Tire noise is divided into a road noise(structure-borne noise) and a pattern noise(air-borne noise). Whilst the road noise is caused by the structural vibration of the components on the transfer path from tire to car body, the pattern noise is generated by the air-pumping between tire and road. In this paper, a practical method to estimate the pattern noise inside a passenger car is proposed. The method is developed based on the sound intensity and airborne source quantification. Sound intensity is used for identifying the noise sources of tire. Airborne source quantification is used for estimating the sound pressure level generated by each noise source of a tire. In order to apply the airborne source quantification to the estimation of the sound pressure, the volume velocity of each source should be obtained. It is obtained by using metrics inverse method. The proposed method is successfully applied to the evaluation of the interior noises generated by four types of tires with different pattern each other.

An air-conditioner has various noise sources such as cooling fan noise, pumping noise, flow noise and impact noise. Among these, impact noise is the most unpleasant source. This is because the noise is produced in indoor unit of air-conditioner. To control the noise source effectively, first we must identify the noise sources. When we identify impact noise source, the measurement have to be carried out simultaneously. So we use beamforming method that requires less measurement points than intensity method and acoustic holography. The objective of this paper is to estimate the location of impact source. This objective can be achieved by using minimum variance cepstrum that is able to detect impulse embedded in noise. In this study, modified beamforming method based on cepstrum domain is proposed. Then this method applied to air-conditioner noise sources which produce impact noise.
