In this study, the wind load characteristics for a transmission tower is investigated considering the effect of the transmission lines through stochastic analysis. The assemblage of the transmission line and insulator are modeled as a double pendulum system connected to the SDOF model of the tower It is observed that the background component of the overturing moment induced by the wind response of the transmission line has considerable portion in the total overturning moment. Based on this result, a rotational viscoelastic damper (VED) is proposed for the mitigation of the transmission line reactions, which act as wind load transferred to the tower. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, time history analysis is conducted for different wind velocities and VED damping constants. From the analysis, the proposed VED is proved to be effective for mitigation of the background component rather than the resonance component of the transmission line reaction.
The inerter-based vibration absorber (IVA) is an enhanced variation of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD). The parametric optimization of absorbers in the previous research mainly considered only two decision variables, namely frequency ratio and damping ratio, and aimed to minimize peak displacement and acceleration individually under the excitation of the across-wind load. This paper extends these efforts by minimizing two conflicting objectives simultaneously, i.e., the extreme displacement and acceleration at the top floor, under the constraint of the physical mass. Six decision variables are optimized by adopting a constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (CMOEA), i.e., NSGA-II, under fluctuating across- and along-wind loads, respectively. After obtaining a set of optimal individuals, a decision-making approach is employed to select one solution which corresponds to a Tuned Mass Damper Inerter/Tuned Inerter Damper (TMDI/TID). The optimization procedure is applied to parametric optimization of TMDI/TID installed in a 340-meter-high building under wind loads. The case study indicates that the optimally-designed TID outperforms TMDI and TMD in terms of wind-induced vibration mitigation under different wind directions, and the better results are obtained by the CMOEA than those optimized by other formulae. The optimal TID is proven to be robust against variations in the mass and damping of the host structure, and mitigation effects on acceleration responses are observed to be better than displacement control under different wind directions.
To efficiently attenuate seismic responses of a structure, a novel pneumatic-driven active dynamic vibration absorber (PD-ADVA) is proposed in this study. PD-ADVA aims to realize closed-loop control using a simple and intuitive control algorithm, which takes the structure velocity response as the input signal and then outputs an inverse control force to primary structure. The corresponding active control theory and phase control mechanism of the system are studied by numerical and theoretical methods, the system's control performance and amplitude-frequency characteristics under seismic excitations are explored. The capability of the proposed active control system to cope with frequency-varying random excitation is evaluated by comparing with the optimum tuning TMD. The analysis results show that the control algorithm of PD-ADVA ensures the control force always output to the structure in the opposite direction of the velocity response, indicating that the presented system does not produce a negative effect. The phase difference between the response of uncontrolled and controlled structures is zero, while the phase difference between the control force and the harmonic excitation is π, the theoretical and numerical results demonstrate that PD-ADVA always generates beneficial control effects. The PD-ADVA can effectively mitigate the structural seismic responses, and its control performance is insensitive to amplitude. Compared with the optimum tuning TMD, PD-ADVA has better control performance and higher system stability, and will not have negative effects under seismic wave excitations.
This paper presents the design and the application of a new self-powered hybrid electromagnetic damper that can harvest energy while mitigating the vibration of a structure. The damper is able to switch between an energy harvesting passive mode and a semi-active mode depending on the amount of energy harvested and stored in the battery. The energy harvested in the passive mode resulting from the suppression of vibration is employed to power up the monitoring and electronic components necessary for the semi-active control. This provides a hybrid control capability that is autonomous in terms of its power requirement. The proposed hybrid circuit design provides two possible options for the semi-active control: without energy harvesting and with energy harvesting. The device mechanism and the circuitry that can drive this self-powered electromagnetic damper are described in this paper. The parameters that determine the device feasible force-velocity region are identified and discussed. The effectiveness of this hybrid damper is evaluated through a numerical simulation study on vibration mitigation of a bridge stay cable under wind excitation. It is demonstrated that the proposed hybrid design outperforms the passive case without external power supply. It is also shown that a broader force range, facilitated by decoupled passive and semi-active modes, can improve the vibration performance of the cable.

Structures of Civil Engineering have been designed with a safety as their main purpose. However recently, the greenness side of the technology of civil engineering regarded as most Important and also utility values and stability of the structures. Also developments in the technology make materials to be higher strength and they shortened scales and stiffness of the structural members. This means that it brings an immoderate deflection and vibration of bridge structures simultaneously. Accordingly, this study ai ed to find and estimate the most idealized structure models on the effects of the deflection and vibration of bridges from the traffic lane load and human vibration - the main pass of bridge structures.

Impact damper is a passive damping system that controls undesirable vibration with mass block impacting with stops fixed to the excited structure, introducing momentum exchange and energy dissipation. However, harmful momentum exchange may occur in the random excitation increasing structural response. Based on the mechanism of impact damping system, a semi-active impact damper (SAID) with controllable impact timing as well as a semi-active control strategy is proposed to enhance the seismic performance of engineering structures in this paper. Comparative experimental studies were conducted to investigate the damping performances of the passive impact damper and SAID. The extreme working conditions for SAID were also discussed and approaches to enhance the damping effect under high-intensity excitations were proposed. A numerical simulation model of SAID attached to a frame structure was established to further explore the damping mechanism. The experimental and numerical results show that the SAID has better control effect than the traditional passive impact damper and can effectively broaden the damping frequency band. The parametric studies illustrate the mass ratio and impact damping ratio of SAID can significantly influence the vibration control effect by affecting the impact force.
This paper presents a multi-functional system, consisting of a magnetorheological (MR) damper and an electromagnetic induction (EMI) device, and its applications in stay cables. The proposed system is capable of offering multiple functions: (1) mitigating excessive vibrations of cables, (2) estimating cable tension, and (3) harvesting energy for wireless sensors used health monitoring of cable-stayed bridges. In the proposed system, the EMI device, consisting of permanent magnets and a solenoid coil, can converts vibration energy into electrical energy (i.e., induced emf); hence, it acts as an energy harvesting system. Moreover, the cable tension can be estimated by using the emf signals obtained from the EMI device. In addition, the MR damper, whose damping property is controlled by the harvested energy from the EMI device, can effectively reduce excessive cable vibrations. In this study, the multi-functionality of the proposed system is experimentally evaluated by conducting a shaking table test as well as a full-scale stay cable in a laboratory setting. In the shaking table experiment, the energy harvesting capability of the EMI device for wireless sensor nodes is investigated. The performance on the cable tension estimation and the vibration mitigation are evaluated using the full-scale cable test setup. The test results show that the proposed system can sufficiently generate and store the electricity for operating a wireless sensor node twice per day, significantly alleviate vibration of a stay cable (by providing about 20% larger damping compared to the passive optimal case), and estimate the cable tension accurately within a 2.5% error.

Estimate method of cable tension forces can be classified into direct method and indirect method. Direct method is not accuracy and it has many restrictions. Therefore, in generally Indirect method, vibration method using natural frequency, has been applied to estimate the tension forces. In this study, cable tensions of recently constructed cable-stayed bridge are measured using string vibration method and this result comparing with result of multiple mode method. To put it brief, the error of string vibration method is not exceeding 2% under 7th mode. Specially third and 4th mode error is not exceeding 1%. safety.

Using magnetorheological (MR) dampers in multiswitch open-loop control mode has been shown to be cost-effective for cable vibration mitigation. In this paper, a method for analyzing the damping performance of taut cables incorporating MR dampers in open-loop control mode is developed considering the effects of damping coefficient, damper stiffness, damper mass, and stiffness of the damper support. Making use of a three-element model of MR dampers and complex modal analysis, both numerical and asymptotic solutions are obtained. An analytical expression is obtained from the asymptotic solution to evaluate the equivalent damping ratio of the cable-damper system in the open-loop control mode. The individual and combined effects of the damping coefficient, damper stiffness, damper mass and stiffness of damper support on vibration control effectiveness are investigated in detail. The main thrust of the present study is to derive a general formula explicitly relating the normalized system damping ratio and the normalized damper parameters in consideration of all concerned effects, which can be easily used for the design of MR dampers to achieve optimal open-loop vibration control of taut cables.
