  • This paper reports on the research which investigates acoustic signals acquired in turning with rough and finish simultaneously. The material is aluminum thin pipe. Two acoustic sensors were set on CNC machine. One was set on the finish bite and the other the rough. Two signals were first analyzed in order to consider how much the acoustic signal from the finish bite was coupled by that from the rough. A simple data collecting system to acquire signals from the finish was then determined because two acoustic signals were little coupled. Second the fundamental experiments were accomplished to study the effects of machine vibration and material state. The signal characteristics due to surface defects were studied from the collected acoustic signal data. The signal analysis was based on real time data, root mean squared average and frequency spectrum by fast fourier transform. As a result, the acoustic signals were made effects by machine condition, material structure. The acoustic signal from the finish bite was closely correlated with surface quality. Two types surface micro defects were then evaluated by the signal characteristics.

  • This paper reports on the research which investigates acoustic signals acquired in turning with rough and finish simultaneously. The material is aluminum thin pipe. Two acousto-ultrasonic sensors were set on the finish and the rough bite of the CNC machine. It was first evaluated that one source was affected by the other. It was found that two signals were little affected each other, and that the acoustic signal from the finish bite was more related to the surface defects. Signals from the finish bite only were then analyzed in order to observe several types of surface defects. Second the fundamental experiments were accomplished to study the effects of machine vibration and material state. The signal characteristics due to surface defects were studied from the collected acoustic signals. The analysis was based on real time data, root mean squared average and frequency spectrum by fast fourier transform. • To detect the failures in machine, the signals of current, vibration and acoustic emission are widely used in industry. And unexpected failures of gears are not only extremely damaging but also lead to economic losses. In this paper, to detect the misalignment occurred at between two gears in gearboxes, the signals of current, vibration and AE were measured at gearbox and motor power line. FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) was used for current and vibration signal analysis to find gear failure frequency. Especially, the envelop analysis and wavelet transform were applied for AE signal. Therefore, compared with the results of three kinds of signal, the possibility of earily detection by AE is identified or checked.

  • Gear system has been widely used in industrial applications and unexpected failures of gears are not only extremely damaging but also lead to economic losses. So, early detection of fault is important for diagnosis machine condition. And acoustic emission is an efficient non destructive testing technique for the diagnosis of machine health and is useful technique for early detection of fault because it can find low-amplitude and high-frequency signal on account of high sensibility. Therefore, in this paper, the AE signal was measured and preprocessed using envelop analysis for gearbox with misalignment between pinion and gear. And then the vibration characteristic of gear misalignment was analyzed.

  • AE(Acoustic Emission) signal is correlated to workpiece material, cutting conditions and tool geometry during metal cutting. The relationship between AE signal and cutting parameters can be obtained by theoretical model and experiments. The value of CR(Count Rate) is nearly constant in stable cutting, but when the chatter vibration occours, the value of CR is rapidly increased due to the vibration deformation zone. By experimental signal processing of AE, it is more effective than by RMS(Root Mean Square) measurement to detect the threshold of chatter vibration by CR measurement.

  • We should maintain the maximum operation capacity for production facilities and find properly out the fault of each equipment rapidly in order to decrease a loss caused by its failure. The acoustic and vibration signals of a machine always carry the dynamic information of the machine. These signals are very useful fur the feature extraction and fault diagnosis. We performed a fundamental study which develops a system of fault diagnosis for a pump. We experimented vibrations by acceleration sensors and noises by microphones, compared and analysed for normal products, artificially deformed products. We tried to search a change of the dynamic signals according to machine malfunctions and analyse the type of deformation or failure. The results showed that acoustic signals as well as vibration signals can be used as a simple method lot a detection of machine malfunction or fault diagnosis.

  • When we carry out acoustic holography, step-by-step measurement provides us larger aperture size with same number of microphones. But when we carry out step-by-step measurement, it is blown that sound signal must be stationary. However, when transfer function between input and output signal is time-invariant, we can apply step-by-step measurement to acoustic holography even if sound signal is transient We have to do only some Processing on signals from step-by-step measurements to make the signal data of each step compatiable with other steps. This paper accounts for that processing method.

  • Acoustic signal is emitted from a vessel and received by a cylindrical array sensor at some distance from the vessel. Acoustic signal is the source for a cylindrical array sensor which is designed to detect the acoustic signal. Cylindrical array sensors seldom have an ideal hydrodynamic shape and are not sufficiently robust to survive without some protection and they are normally housed in a sonar dome. Reflected signals by some structure inside a sonar dome make unwanted signals. Therefore, an acoustic baffle is used to minimize unwanted signals. The performance of the acoustic baffles can be determined from the acoustic numerical analysis at the design stage. In this study, finite element method was used to analyze the acoustic field around the cylindrical array sensor and baffle effects. The baffle performance can be defined the echo reduction. To show the baffle performance, the specimens were made for pulse tube test and echo reductions were measured during the test. In this paper, the effect of echo reduction of the acoustic baffle was discussed.

  • To detect external acoustic signal, fiber optic sensor array using Fabry-Perot interferometer which had benefit of minimize and light-weight was used. The sensor head has 1cm in length, total length of fiber is 9.5cm, and the sensor supported at both ends, simply. External sound applied in lateral direction and detected two signals were compared each other. It was confirmed that the Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor array detected acoustic signal, effectively.
