This paper presents a fault diagnosis algorithm of control surfaces of small fixed-wing aircraft to reduce maintenance cost or to improve repair efficiency by estimation of fault occurrence or part replacement periods. The proposed fault diagnosis algorithm consists of ANPSD (Averaged Normalized Power Spectral Density), PCA (Principle Component Analysis), and GC (Geometric Classifier). ANPSD is used for frequency-domain vibration testing. PCA has advantage to extract compressed information from ANPSD. GC has good properties to minimize errors of the fault detection and isolation. The algorithm was verified by the accelerometer measurements of the scaled normal and faulty ailerons and the test results show that the algorithm is suitable for the detection and isolation of the control surface faults. This paper also proposes solutions for some kind of implementation problems.

This study is proposed a new hybrid mount having a moving-magnet type electromagnetic actuator to reduce the vibration transmitted from naval shipboard equipment to the structure of the ship's hull. Optimal design specifications are determined through experimental analysis. The detailed design of the hybrid mount is determined through several design steps with electromagnetic numerical analysis using Maxwell Software(S/W). The hybrid mount that combines a rubber mount and an electromagnetic actuator has a fail-safe function for shock resistance. The mount is fabricated and tested using a universal testing machine to evaluate the design specifications. Finally, numerical simulation of the hybrid mount is performed to confirm control performance and applicability.

High-rise buildings (HRBs) are considered one of the most common structures nowadays due to the population growth, especially in crowded towns. The lack of land in crowded cities has led to the convergence of the HRBs and the absence of any gaps between them, especially in lands with weak soil (e.g., liquefaction-prone soil), but then during earthquakes, these structures may be exposed to the risk of collision between them due to the large increase in the horizontal displacements, which may be destructive in some cases to the one or both of these adjacent buildings. To evaluate methods of reducing the risk of collision between adjacent twin HRBs, this research investigates three vibration control methods to reduce the risk of collision due to five different earthquakes for the case of two adjacent reinforced concrete (RC) twin high-rise buildings of 15 floors height without gap distance between them, founded on raft foundation supported on piles inside a liquefaction-prone soil. Contact pounding elements between the two buildings (distributed at all floor levels and at the raft foundation level) are used to make the impact strength between the two buildings realistic. The mitigation methods investigated are the base isolation, the tuned mass damper (TMD) method (using traditional TMDs), and the pounding tuned mass damper (PTMD) method (using PTMDs connected between the two buildings). The results show that the PTMD method between the two adjacent RC twin high-rise buildings is more efficient than the other two methods in mitigating the earthquake-induced pounding risk.
Tunnels that have recently been constructed are characterized by longer length than ever before and furthermore they frequently go through the ground area with poor conditions such as fractured zones. If ground strength is weak, plastic deformation of tunnel occurs, and occasionally a big fall may be brought about. Up to now, the construction work of tunneling has been executed as a sequential method placing the lining concrete after completion of excavation. Such a method requires a long time and much money to complete the tunnel. It is hard to ensure the stability of tunnel if tunnel is left undone for a long time after excavation in fracture zones or plastic grounds. For this reason, we tried to take simultaneous construction of tunnel excavation and lining concrete in order to not only shorten construction schedule but also stabilize the tunnel at the highly fractures zone as soon as possible. As preliminary consideration for simultaneous construction, in-situ tests are performed to calculate the isolation distance over which blasting vibration does not influence the strength of lining concrete. Improvement of ling form, placing method of concrete, ventilation using a dust collector, together with equipment arrangement, was made to assure the simultaneous construction work.

The design concepts using vibration reduction techniques, or structural control, have been proposed recently to protect infrastructure against earthquakes. The magnetorheological(MR) fluid damper is one of the most promising new devices for structural vibration reduction because of its mechanical simplicity, high dynamic range, low power requirement, large force capacity and robustness. In this study, the seismic performance of MR devices are compared with that of NZ systems as an attempt to provide some data for improving seismic design techniques applied to structures. For nonlinear time domain analysis of a base isolation system, a six-story building model is considered as a numerical example. The ground acceleration data of El Centre 1940, Mexico City 1985 and Kobe 1995 earthquakes are used as seismic excitations. The results show that MR damper systems for outperform NZ systems in wide-ranging seismic excitations with respect to intensity and period characteristics.
A CFPBS (Cone-type Friction Pendulum Bearing System) was developed to control the acceleration delivered to a structure to prevent the damage and degradation of critical communication equipment during earthquakes. This study evaluated the isolation performance of the CFPBS by numerical analysis. The CFPBS was manufactured in the shape of a cone differenced with the existing FPS (Friction Pendulum System), and a pattern was engraved on the friction surface. The natural frequencies of the CFPBS were evaluated from a free-vibration test with a seismic isolator system consisting of 4 CFPBS. To confirm the earthquake-resistant performance, a numerical analysis program was prepared using the equation of the CFPBS induced from the equations of motion. The equation reported by Tsai for the rolling-type seismic isolation bearings was proposed to design the equation of the CFPBS. Artificial seismic waves that satisfy the maximum earthquake scale of the Korean Building Code-Structural (KBC-2005) were created and verified to review the earthquake-resistant performance of the CFPBS by numerical analysis. The superstructural mass of the CFPBS and the skew angle of friction surface were considered for numerical analysis with El Centro NS, Kobe NS and artificial seismic waves. The CFPBS isolation performance evaluation was based on the numerical analysis results, and comparative analysis was performed between the results from numerical analysis and simplified theoretical equation under the same conditions. The validity of numerical analysis was verified from the shaking table test.

Through the data transfer race in industry since 1990s, the operational speed of optical disk drive(ODD) becomes commonly over 10,000 rpm. Such high speed operation inevitably causes the vibration, which is also the disturbances in the read-write process of pick-up servo-controller. Generally the vibration disturbance problem can be solved by the vibration isolation using the rubber mount and the increase of robustness of the pick-up servo-controller. Optical disk itself has not been targeted for the vibration reduction, because it is manufactured under the standardized format. In this paper we focused on the increase of critical speed of optical disk, that is, the improvement of dynamic characteristics, with the control of residual stresses which are come from the injection molding process. To do this, first, the residual stresses induced from the injection molding process are calculated using finite element method. The major design parameters of the process conditions are flow rate and melt temperature, which control the residual stresses in optical disk. Second, the critical speed of optical disk is calculated with modal analysis considering residual stress distributions. It was found out that the critical speed can be improved by the control of operational parameters in the injection molding process.

The objective of conventional seismic design is to ensure an acceptable safety level while avoiding catastrophic failures of structures and loss of life. Over the last many years, a large amount of research has been devoted into developing effective earthquake resistant systems in order to raise the seismic performance level of structures. The purpose of this study is to propose a new damping system, which realize not only increasing seismic performance but also easy repairing after an earthquake. The proposed damping system is slit in the bottom of wall with damping devices installed in the slit horizontally aiming to dissipate energy during earthquakes. Cyclic loading tests were conducted to investigate hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capacity. Test results show that the proposed systems exhibit a stable hysteretic response and the energy dissipation in this system is concentrated on the damping devices.
Automotive suspension system is a mechanism for isolation of the vibration coming from the road inputs. Recently, the electronically controlled suspension systems which may improve ride and handling performance have been developed. Here, the continuously controlled semi-active suspension system is focused. As a mechanism to control damping forces continuously, a solenoid valve is used. The modeling for the solenoid valve is introduced briefly, a vehicle dynamics modeling is constructed, and then combined system model is completed. To design the efficient control algorithm for the semiactive suspension system the knowledge based fuzzy logic is applied and the technique how to apply the sky-hook theory to the fuzzy logic is developed. Finally, to confirm the improvement of performance the computer simulation is carried out.
This paper presents vibration control of a drive feeding system consisting of a new type of CD-ROM(compact discread only memory) mount using electro-rheologocal(ER) fluid. Chemically treated starch particles and silicon oil are used for ER fluid. and its field-dependent yield stresses are experimentally distilled under both the shear and the flow modes. On the basis of the yield stress, an appropriate size of ER CD-ROM mount adapted to conventional feeding system is designed and manufactured. Vibration isolation performance of the proposed mount is evaluated in the frequency domain and compared with that of conventional rubber mount. The ER CD-ROM mount is then installed to the drive feeding system and the system equation of motion is derived. Following the formulating the sky-hook controller, computer simulation is undertaken in order to evaluate vibration suppression of the feeding system subjected to various disturbances(excitations).
