  • This paper describes on the distribution of the vibration and the noise produced on a skipjack pole and line training ship M/S Pusan 403 (243GT, 1,000ps) under the cruising or drifting condition. The vibration and the noise level were measured by use of protable vibration analyzer (B and K 3513) and sound level meter (B and K 2205), and so the vibration level was converted into dB unit. The check points were set through every decks and around important places of the ship. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The vibration and the noise level 1) On the main deck, both the vibration and the noise level were highest at the vertically above the main engine, whereas the vibration level was the lowest in the bow store and the noise level beneath the bridge. 2) Under cruising condition, the vibration level around the cylinder head of main engine, port side of the engine room, on the shaft tunnel was 80, 67, 65 dB and the noise level 104, 87, 86 dB, respectively. 3) The vibration level on the vertical line passing through the bridge was the highest at the orlop deck with 60 dB and the lowest on the bridge deck with 55 dB, whereas the noise level the highest at the compass deck with 75 dB and the lowest at the orlop deck with 53 dB. 4) The vibration and the noise level on the open decks were the highest with 65 dB and 84 dB on the boat deck, whereas the vibration level was the lowest at the lecture room with 51 dB and the noise level the lowest at the fore castle deck with 57 dB. 5) On the orlop decks, both the vibration and the noise level were the highest at the engine room with 65 dB and 85 dB, and the lowest at bow store with 54 dB and 52 dB, respectively. Comparing with the vibration level and the noise level, the vibration level was higher than the noise level in the bow part and it was contrary in the stern part of the ship. 2. Vibration analysis 1) The vibration displacement and the vibration velocity were the greatest at the cylinder head of main engine with 100μm and 11mm/sec, and were the smallest at the compass deck with 3μm and 0.07mm/sec. They were also attenuated rapidly around the frequency of 100Hz and over. 2) The vibration acceleration was the greatest at the cylinder head with the main frequency of 1KHz and the acceleration of 1.1mm/sec super(2), and the smallest at the compass deck with 30KHz and 0.05mm/sec super(2).

  • High-speed rotating machinery requires low cost and reliable bearing elements with low friction, stable rotordynamic characteristics, and a simple design. This study experimentally evaluates the effects of bearing-support elements on the vibrational characteristics of a small-sized, high-speed permanent magnetic motor. A series of coast down tests from 100 krpm characterize the vibrational behaviors, rotor displacement, and housing acceleration of motors supported by ball bearings, ball bearings with a metal mesh damper, and gas foil bearings, respectively. Two eddy-current sensors installed in the horizontal and vertical directions measure the displacement of the rotor at its front nut, and a 3-axis accelerometer attached to the motor housing measures the housing acceleration. The test results reveal that synchronous (1X) vibration components most significantly affect the rotor displacement and housing acceleration, independent of the bearing-support elements. The motor supported by the deep-groove ball bearings results in the largest rotor vibrations increasing with speed; this is due to the absence of a damping mechanism. Additionally, the metal mesh damper effectively reduces the rotor displacement, housing acceleration, and sound-pressure level in the high-speed region (i.e., above 40 krpm), thus implying its substantial damping performance when installed on the outer race of the ball bearing. Lastly, the gas foil bearing supported motor yields the smallest rotor displacement, housing acceleration, and lowest sound-pressure level because of its hydrodynamic airborne operation, which does not require rolling elements that may cause mechanical friction and vibrations.

  • Sound quality engineering in automobile noise applications has become more and more important under the current quiet driving condition because various noise components masked under high noise level can be audible in quieter driving situation. Many researches have been carried out for subjective and objective assessments on automobile sounds and noises. In particular, the interior sound quality has been one of research fields that can give high-quality feature to automobile products. Although many works related to the interior sound quality have been progressed or completed in foreign countries, limited research results are presented in the country. In the study, subjective assessments are first performed with 20 subjects to select perceptual adjectives suitable to the assessment of car interior noises during acceleration. The selected perceptual adjectives are employed as the assessment scales to evaluate the acceleration noises in questionnaire procedures using 35 subjects, for which several noises are created through digital filtering of the acceleration noises measured. Mean values and standard deviations for subjective assessment scores obtained by the questionnaire procedures are calculated and their reliability are also verified. Finally, various statistical analyses such as the correlation analysis and the factor analysis are carried out to reveal the interrelationship between the assessment scales and the spectrum components of the acceleration noises.

  • In this paper we present an overview of the factors and techniques that must be considered in vibration measurements in the floor structures for microelectronics facilities. Normally narrowband vibration spectrum or equivalent signals are suggested as the guide indexes of site vibration phenomina. But it cannot support perfect informations in designing vibration control systems for the vibration sensitive equipment even though the spectrum serves to illustrate the fact that most real vibration environments are dominated by broadband energy as opposed to tonal energy. The major topics cover stiffness in frequency and time domain, acceleration level and modal characteristics from experimental modal analysis as well as narrowband spectrum. The combined signal analysis through the items mentioned above can give better solutions and would be positively recomended to solve the vibration problems on a sort of limited field.

  • The objective of this paper is to address to the providing an adequate noise and vibration solution, required for High Speed Rail while maintaining the stability criteria of the ChonAn station structure, the first constructed in Korean High Speed Railway. The significant acoustic pressure level will be induced by the high speed trains passing-by. Therefore, the high level study of this case is necessary. The acoustic pressure level of 85 dB(A) inside the ChonAn station is expected, and the spaces below concrete slab are not suitable for commercial purpose, thus installation of filtering systems (spring boxes containing viscous dampers, ballast mats and acoustic shield) are provided to reduce the effect of the noise and vibration to acceptable level of 55 dB(A). But, a major drawback of application of the previously conducted experimental results was that the actual effect of installation of filtering system was never been validated. Therefore, the acquisition of noise and vibration on the present structure were obtained and compared to the computer simulations. These predicted the behavior of the station reasonably well. Also, the installation of filtering systems gave the superior reduction on noise and vibration. This application is successfully adapted without scarifying stability criteria related to the structural stability including excessive deformations or displacements. Three traffic operation safety limits: deck vertical acceleration, deflection of the structure, and longitudinal displacement of the slab were satisfactory.

  • This paper addresses experimental results carried out to investigate the transmission of seat vibration to the head for Korean. Vertical seat vibration in the frequency range of 0.5-30 Hz was applied to a seated Korean male subject. To examine the intra-variable effects on transmissibility, five different postures and three different vibration excitation levels were considered. The applied acceleration and head accelerations of the seated subject were measured simultaneously by using a 6-axes bite-bar. Detailed experimental results of measured transmissibilities are illustrated for each posture and/or vibration excitation level, and they were compared to an International Standard. They are found to allow the identification of dynamic characteristics of Korean seated body for various reat vibration environments. Furthermore, they are expected to be very useful in designing new seats for automotive and railway vehicles and in improving their vibration ride quality.

  • Modern military equipments are tend to be mounted on a movable truck for their survivability and operation performance. Special units and electronic equipments installed on the truck experience the vibration caused by road roughness during their transport. The level of the transportation vibration is affected by both road conditions and vehicle speeds. In this paper, various experiments on the vibration characteristics of the equipment are carried out via road tests. Transportation vibration is also investigated by numerical analysis using FEM, and natural frequencies and random responses of the launcher are obtained. The PSD and RMS values of acceleration of the equipment are predicted and compared with test results.
