  • In this paper, a hydropneumatic modeling and analysis of a heavy truck cabin air suspension system is presented. Cabin air suspension system is a system which improves ride comfort of a heavy truck and it can reduce vibration between truck frame and cabin. The components of the system, air spring, shock absorber, leveling valve and full cabin system are mathematically modelled using AMESim software. Simulation results of components and full cabin system are compared with experimental data of components and test results of a cabin using 6 axis simulation table. It is found that the simulation results are in good agreements with test results, and the hydropneumatic model can be used well to predict dynamic characteric of heavy truck cabin air suspension system.

  • The current study reports the results of an experimental program conducted on a structure fitted with a liquid damper (TLD) and subjected to harmonic excitation. Screens were placed inside the TLD to achieve the required inherent damping. In the first part of the study, reduced scale models of the building-TLD systems were tested under two levels of excitation. The efficiency of the damper was assessed by evaluating the effective damping provided to the structure and comparing it to the optimum effective damping value, provided by a linear tuned mass damper (TMD). An extensive parametric study was then conducted for one of the three models by varying both the excitation amplitude and the tuning ratio, defined as the ratio of the TLD sloshing frequency to the natural frequency of the structure. The effectiveness and robustness of a TLD with screens were assessed. Results indicate that the TLD can be tuned to achieve a robust performance and that its efficiency is not significantly affected by the level of excitation. Finally, the equivalent amplitude dependent TMD model, developed in the companion paper is validated using the system test results.

  • Thin-walled mental tubes under lateral crushing are desirable and reliable energy absorbers against impact or blast loads. However, the early formations of plastic hinges in the thin cylindrical wall limit the energy absorption performance. This study investigates the energy absorption performance of a simple, light and efficient energy absorber called the ring stiffened tube. Due to the increase of section modulus of tube wall and the restraining effect of the T-stiffener flange, key energy absorption parameters (peak crushing force, energy absorption and specific energy absorption) have been significantly improved against the empty tube. Its potential application in the offshore blast wall design has also been investigated. It is proposed to replace the blast wall endplates at the supports with the energy absorption devices that are made up of the ring stiffened tubes and springs. An analytical model based on beam vibration theory and virtual work theory, in which the boundary conditions at each support are simplified as a translational spring and a rotational spring, has been developed to evaluate the blast mitigation effect of the proposed design scheme. Finite element method has been applied to validate the analytical model. Comparisons of key design criterions such as panel deflection and energy absorption against the traditional design demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design in blast alleviation.

  • Recently, regulations pertaining to the noise and vibration environment of offshore plants have been strengthened. For example, the NORSOK standards have been applied, which are very strict regulations that are comparable to those applied to passenger ships. Furthermore, the use of porous materials, such as those used in most of the current insulating panels, has been forbidden. Therefore, honeycomb-backed Micro-Perforated Plates (MPPs) are now regarded as next-generation absorber materials. This paper reports the results of parametric studies that were performed using numerical methods to determine the effect of the thickness on the performance of a honeycomb panel and the effect of the perforation ratio on the MPP performance. The numerical results were verified through experiments. Finally, we propose a combined honeycomb/MPP panel where the MPP is placed between upper and lower honeycomb panels and one end surface is also replaced with an MPP.

  • The dynamic characteristics of Control Element Drive Mechanism(CEDM) for Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant are studied with the CEDM modeled as a secondary mass in a simplified two degree of freedom system, while the reactor vessel as a primary mass. The optimal .mu.-f curve is developed to reduce the response amplitudes of both primary and secondary masses. In order to improve a design it is proposed that the natural frequency ratio, f, should be converged to 0.93, the mass ratio, .mu., should not be reduced, and the result should be converged to the optimal .mu.-f curve. Optimal design for CEDM components has been carried out and the response amplitude ratios of reactor are reduced 10.5 - 19.7% while those of CEDM are reduced 6.3 - 3.4%.

  • In this paper, damping coefficients and effective masses of tuned liquid-type column dampers were quantitatively evaluated based on experimental results by using system identification technique. First, shaking table tests were performed for two types of tuned liquid-type column dampers. Then, the dynamic characteristics of dampers used in this study were experimentally grasped from harmonic wave excitation testing results of the dampers with various water level. Finally, damping ratios and effective masses of the dampers with varying water level were quantitatively evaluated from minimizing the errors between numerical and experimental results. It was confirmed from system identification results that damping ratio and effective mass are decreased as the water level of dampers is increased.

  • In the studies of noise reduction, it is important to know the generation mechanism of noise in order to identify the noise source. The relation between the structural vibration and the radiated sound is very complex and so this paper deals with a simplified radiation model that was originally developed as a verification tool for the acoustic intensity measurement procedure. As the first step for the identification of the noise source, this study deals with the noise evaluation by measuring sound pressure. On the next step, the acoustic radiational pattern is determined by the acoustic intensity method and this paper established that the acoustic intensity method is effective on the detection of noise. In the study, furthermore, the method could be used to predict the change in the sound radiational characteristics with the attachment of absorber and could be used in determining the attachment position.

  • Swirl injector with multi-stage tangential entry was analyzed to suppress high-frequency combustion instability in Liquid Rocket Engines. In order to analyze the effect of swirl injector as an acoustic absorber, swirl injector was regarded as a quarter-wave resonator and it's damping capacity is verified in atmospheric temperature. It has a finite mode of vibration and natural frequencies which can be tuned to the natural frequencies of a model combustion chamber. The interior air core shape of injector is more stable in the case of using the swirl injector with multi-stage entry than with single-stage entry. Also, when the swirl injector with multi-stage entry is used, tuned-injector length for unstable mode is well agreed with the calculated length. From the experimental data, it is proved that if the interior air core shape of swirl injector is stable, the fine tuned swirl injector can decrease the unstable mode of model chamber effectively and increase the damping rate.

When the targeted injector for each modes is located at anti-node point, the amplitude of modes was decreased. And when the injector of large diameter is mounted, the split of mode which accompanies the decrease of amplitude appeared. From the experimental data, it is proved that if the location of injector mounted is located at an anti-node position of the targeted modes with proper volume, the amplitude of modes is decreased and the split of modes occurs at anti-node point.
