  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of urinary acupoint (BL-23, BL-28) by acupuncture (AP) and electroacupuncture (EA) on urinary bladder in dogs. Four healthy male dogs aged within the range of 6~8 months were used in this experiment. For Electrodes implantation on the bladder, dogs were to undergo surgical operation. The purpose of investigating the effect on urinary bladder was to evaluate electromyogram (EMG) changes according to AP or EA at Shen Shu (BL-23), Pang Guang Shu (BL-28) and non-acupoint. AP and EA (2~4 V, 10 Hz) were applied for 20 min to each point. EMG was evaluated when acupuncture began stimulation and as soon as the stimulation by electroacupuncture was gone. By the experiment of investigating the effect of urinary time it was estimated to measure time up to urination from stimulation on effective acupoint, after saline was filled with 70% of whole volumes on urinary bladder. The wave of EMG on resting stage showed simple and regular, whereas that of EMG on urination showed irregularly strong peaks before urination. Acupuncture of BL-28 had an influence on changes of EMG which had irregular peaks on urination. But the changes of EMG after acupuncture of BL-28 and control were regular like resting stage. The changes of EMG after EA at BL-23 and BL-28 showed irregularly a variety of wave forms. The interval through urination from stimulation at BL-28 and control become short as measuring time by EA (p<0.01). According to the results, AP at BL-28 was effective to urinary bladder. EA at BL-23 and BL-28 was effective to urinary bladder. Especially, the interval on stimulating at BL-28 by EA was the shortest in measuring time to urination from stimulation.

  • Radix Paeoniae rubra (PR) has been widely used for recovering acute inflammation with swelling and pain in Far East Asian countries. In order to investigate the anti-arthritic effect of PR herbacupuncture, several behavioral parameters such as body weight, knee circumference, squeaking threshold, and weight distribution ratio were investigated in an adjuvant-induced mono-arthritis rat model. We performed PR herb-acupuncture on Zusanli (ST36) of the right hind-leg once every second day for a total of 6 times from the second day of initiating arthritis with adjuvant injection, while the control group was treated with saline in the same way. In the experimental group, body weight significantly increased, knee circumference and squeaking threshold significantly decreased indicating the reduction of edema, and both the pain and inflammatory swelling of the hind paws measured by incapacitance meter decreased. Conclusively, PR herb-acupuncture has more promising effect in alleviating arthritic pain and inflammation than saline-acupuncture in rat model, hence further clinical study is required.

  • This study evaluated the effect of acupuncture in dogs with experimentally induced spleens pancreas and urinary bladder disease. For the spleen studys sixteen dogs were divided into four groups(each of 4 in dogs): laserfonctnreg electroacupunctnre, acupuncture and control group. Spleen disease was brought by experimentally induced spleen traumata and then treatment was done once daisy for 4 days. The acupoints used were Pi-shu and Ge-shu. The effect of acupuncture was evaluated by clinical grmptomi hematological findings and blood chemical values. Acupuncture and Iaserpunctore group revealed rotatively fast recovery compared with other sloops. For the pancreas study, sixteen dogs were divided into four groups(each of 4 in dogs): laserpuncture, electroacupuncture, acupuncture and control group. Pancreas disease was brought by experimentally induced pancreas trauma, and then treatment was done once daily for 4 days The acupoints used were Wei-shu and Pi-shu. The effect of acupuncture was evaluate6 by clinical symptom, hematological findings and blood chemical values. Laserpuncture revealed relatively frost recovery and acupuncture group revealed secondly fast recovery after treatment. For the urinary bladder study, sixteen dogs were divided into four groups(each of 4 in dogs): laserpuncture, electroacupuncture, acupuncture and control group. Spleen disease was brought by experimentally induced urinary stoner and then treatment was done once daily for 4 days. The acupuncture used were Pang Guang-shu and Shen-shu. The effect of acupuncture was evaluated by clinical symptom, hematological findings, and blood chemical values. Laserpuncture and acupuncoure group revealed relatively fast recovery compared with other groups.

  • In order to develop an effective methods of electroacupuncture regional analgesia for Cattle, six adult Korean-native cattle, which were healthy and had ordinary perception response, were examined on the study. Using them, there were treated with six different prescription applying on six mendian points including Samyang Rack, Keud Mun, Bu Yang, Sameum Kyo, Backhyo and Hu Hae. The results are summerized as follows. 1 In the case of the acupuncture treatment on Samyang Rack and Keuk Mun located on both fore-legs. the good effect of regional analgesia was obtained toward the anterior part of cattle; on the other hand, when treated with Bu Yang and Sameum Kyo at both hindlegs. the same result were represented toward the posterior part. 2. The level of the electronic current of each electro-acupuncture treatment for bovine regional analgesia was proved to necessitated the same amount of which had given body general electro-acupuncture analgesia. 3. Any significant changes could not find out the hematological and biochemical values of all acupuncture-treated cattle during the experiment. 4. Each elector-acupuncture prescription appeared to be considerably effective for bovine regional analgesia, and also showed the possibility on applying the standing position of cattle for various surgical treatment regardless its operation areas.

  • A 4-year-old male Maltese dog was referred with chief complaint of facial nerve paralysis and hyperthermia. These clinical signs were occurred after tooth extraction. Leukocytosis and swelling of left side of gums were detected. He was medicated with antibiotics for 9 days, however, inability of blinking in left eye, lacrimation and hyperthermia were not improved. The patient was administrated with Oyaksungisan (50 mg/kg, PO, BID) for 14 days and was treated by injection-acupuncture (AP) with bee venom ($200\;{\mu}g/head$, two times/week, total three times). The patient was treated by injection-AP with dexamethasone (1 mg/kg, two times/week, total two times). As a result, Left blepharon was slightly blinked at session 4. Blinking of left blepharon became normal after session 5. The present patient was a case with canine facial nerve paralysis which showed favorable therapeutic response by alternative treatment.
