  • In automobile highway tunnels, in order to maintain a suitable environment for drivers and traffic, visibility in the tunnel must be maintained, and the concentrations of poisonous substances including carbon monoxide must be kept at or below allowable levels. For this reason, in long tunnels and tunnels with heavy traffic, ventilation facilities are installed. When the ventilation facilities are run at full capacity, the environment in the tunnel is obviously adequately maintained, but this consumes a great deal of electric power. Consequently, a central problem in highway tunnel ventilation control systems is to keep the pollution concentration at or below the allowable level, and thus provide a safe environment for traffic, while consuming as little electricity as possible. This paper introduces an operation method of longitudinal flow ventilation systems with jet-fan, dust collector and vertical ducts.

  • The smoke propagating distances are measured in case that a fire occurs within the subway railroad tunnel. The tunnel is 800m long and the dimension of the cross-section is. Three vertical shafts exist for smoke ventilation. The experiments are performed using the 1/50 reduced-scale model. The smoke propagating distances are measured by thermocouples and by visualization for the accuracy. In order to understand the effect of a fire size and ventilation capacity of the shafts on the smoke propagating distance, 9 test scenarios are chosen. Based on the results, the smoke propagating distance is shown to be important criteria for the ventilation design of the tunnel.

  • Baehuryeong tunnel connects Chuncheon with Hwacheon in Kangwon, Korea, This tunnel is a single tunnel with 5,057 m long and two bidirectional lanes which will be extended into low lanes in the future. The estimated construction period of Baehuryeong tunnel is approximately 55 months. This tunnel will become the longest bidirectional roadway tunnel in Korea. Compared to a twin tunnel, a bidirectional single tunnel has two major disadvantages with regard to the ventilation system and ease of escape during fire. For these reasons, a service tunnel and the transverse ventilation system are planned first time in Korea. In case of fire, the tunnel ventilation design aims to maintain a smoke free layer for passenger evacuation. The geology of Baehuryeong tunnel site is mainly composed of gneiss and granite. Baehuryeong fault is a mainly large scale fault which stands vertical and parallels with tunnel direction. The influenced zone of this fault is within 70 m. Baehuryeong tunnel was designed that it was separated with the distance of more than 100 m from Baehuryeong fault for its safety.

  • An experimental study was carried out on a reduced scale model tunnel to investigate the efficiency of disaster prevention at underground and ground ventilation equipments for the fire in road tunnels. Based on Froude modeling, the 1/50 scaled model tunnel (20 m long) was manufactured. The vertical shafts that are used in the analysis of efficiency of disaster prevention are the two models that had considered when the real tunnels are designed and the amounts of smoke exhaust are applied the miniature of the real tunnels' smoke exhaust, 560 and $280\;m^3/s$. As the result of analysis, it is the possible the emissions of the entire quantity of CO gas through the vertical shafts. In the ground ventilation equipments, the concentration of CO is discharged 2.23~2,73 ppm smaller than the underground ventilation equipments. And the temperature rise in the ground ventilation equipments is $0.53{\sim}0.94^{\circ}C$ lower than in the underground ventilation equipments because of a cooling effect of the surface of the tunnel wall. As a result of analysis of CO concentration and the temperature rise in the modeling ventilation equipment, the position of ground ventilation equipment is more effective than the underground ventilation equipment in disaster prevention measures.

  • Today's popular ventilation systems include the combined jet fans and electrostatic precipitation systems or the combined jet fans and vertical shaft system. Tunnels with these two ventilation systems applied have been designed and opened, more and more interest has been put in maintenance of a tunnel after opening. Therefore. it is to become more important to come up with the optimal operation mode and the method for the evaluation of ventilation system. In this study, to evaluate a tunnel ventilation and its economy, a dynamic simulation program was developed which can simulate the unsteady-state tunnel air velocity and concentration of pollutants according to the traffic flow variations and operation condition of a ventilation system. We clarified the effectiveness usage on tunnel ventilation by using it and also we could found the most economical ventilation operation mode by application in real exit tunnel. We obtained that combination of fan system and electrostatic precipitation system was more economical than jet fan priority operation mode.

  • Long subsea tunnel to be built below the seabed, as compared to the general railway tunnel, is subject to many restrictions in terms of spatial limitation when vertical or inclined shafts are built for the purpose of ventilation and fire safety. So, the construction of some artificial island is required to provide ventilation. But, because of construction difficulty and cost increase, it is necessary to minimize the artificial island construction. The longer ventilation distance is, the more fresh air requirement is needed. When supply airflow becomes excessive, duct size is restricted by the limitations of structure clearance and fan pressure and power increase exponentially. Therefore, in order to build a long subsea tunnel, it is necessary to overcome these practical problems and to develop technical solution that can keep the comfortable condition of tunnel environment during construction. In this study, as on ventilation method development suitable for long subsea tunnel, through comparison of temporary ventilation capacity calculation methods during construction phase, domestic and abroad, the application of Swiss SIA 196 code is found suitable for long subsea tunnel. And, through experiment on leakage of the duct connector, we confirmed that the leakage ratio per 100 m of domestic duct connection type is between 1.5~3.0%. Based on S-class duct of SIA 196 code, ventilation distance is 10.2 km, So, ventilation distance can be longer if duct connection method is improved. So, we confirmed that the improvement of leakage ratio is key issue in the construction-phase ventilation of long subsea tunnel.

  • In the past many tunnels have been built to lowest capital investment cost without adequate regard for the cost of operation. But according to increasing the capacity of a ventilation system and to becoming diverse, it is to become more important to come up with the optimal operation stage of ventilation system. In this study, the tunnel ventilation dynamic simulation program had been developed. it is used to calculate the unsteady-state tunnel air velocity and concentration of pollutants according to the assumed average day traffic profile and summarize the energy consumption for the operation of ventilation system. And the operation energy consumption for the electric precipitation system and vertical vent shaft system are evaluated and compared in various operation mode. As the results of this study, the optimal operation stage for these ventilation system are provided.

  • In recent years, in urban areas, underground of roads are being promoted in order to resolve traffic congestion and to secure green spaces, and due to the low ratio of large vehicles, they are planned or constructed as road tunnels for small cars only. In addition, the tunnels being built in the city is a tendency to be enlarged to play the role of main roads. Accordingly, the capacity of the ventilation system is increasing and various ventilation methods are required, and the importance of maintenance after the completion of the tunnel such as the operating cost of the ventilation system is emphasized. Therefore, the need for optimization of the operation stage for reducing the power consumption of the ventilation system and the study of the ventilation system operation control logic is increasing. In this study, the study on the necessity of the optimization of operation stage and control logic of the ventilation system was carried out to realize the energy-saving operation for the small car only passing through tunnels which is applied of ① jet fan and combination ventilation system (② jet fan + air purifying equipment, ③ jet fan + vertical shaft, ④ jet fan + supply air semi-transverse). As a result of this study, there can be various operating combinations in the case of the combined ventilation system, and even though the amount of ventilation air is the same, the operating power varies greatly according to the operating combinations. It was found that operating the axial fan first rather than the jet fan first operation method has an effect on power saving.

  • Long subsea tunnel is subject to many restrictions in terms of spatial limitation when vertical or inclined shafts are built for tunnel ventilation. So, the construction of some artificial island is required to provide ventilation. But, because of construction difficulty and cost increase, it is necessary to minimize the artificial island construction. As a result, ventilation distance become longer and supply airflow becomes excessive due to air leakage, So, duct mounting for temporary ventilation is impossible or fan pressure and power increase exponentially. Therefore, in order to build a long subsea tunnel, it is necessary to overcome these practical problems and to develop technical solution that can keep the comfortable condition of tunnel environment during construction. In previous study, we have found that air leakage is the key factor in solving these problems and experimental results show that the new connection method has a leakage rate of about $1.46mm^2/m^2$ (Jo et al., 2017). In this study, we present the experimental results of the measurement of the leakage rate of the prototype with the new connection method, and analyze experimentally the improvement of the leakage rate when applying the flexible cover inside the duct to improve the leakage performance of the existing connection method.
