In present study, the principal stress condition needed to conduct cubical large-scale triaxial test which can reflect three dimensional stress condition (or plain strain condition) in a dam was investigated by performing model test and numerical analysis and the principal stress ratio varying with the height of CFRD was examined. Also, the principal stress ratio in CFRD body was investigated from the monitoring results of horizontal and vertical earth pressure gages, installed in the center zone and lower part of transition zone of the dam body, respectively, in order to consider the principal stress condition in the large-scale triaxial test to model the behavior of CFRD. The result of the study indicated that the principal stress ratio decreased gradually from the lower to the upper part in the dam body for its center axis and was about 0.5 and 0.2 in the lower and upper part, respectively.
The soil deformation due to a pile penetration in sandy soils has been analysed in model pile penetration tests. To simulate the actual ground conditions, especially the in-situ stress levee the tests were performed in a calibration chamber where both the vertical and the horizontal stresses could be applied separately. The deformation was monitored via 5 earth pressure cells. The results, were compared with the theortical values based on the theory of cavity expansion.
The vertical distribution of pore water pressure in the highly saturated sand layer under the oscillating water pressure (water wave) us studied theoretically and experimentally. By the experiments it is shown that the water pressure acting on the sand surface propagates into the sand layer with the damping in amplitude and the lag in phase, and that the liquefaction, the state that the effective stress become zero, occurs under certain conditions. These experimental results are explained fairly well by the same theoretical tearment as for ground water problems in the elastic aquifer. The main characteristics of liquefaction clarified by the analysis are as follows: 1) The depth of the liquified layer increases with the increase of the amplitude and the frequency of the oscillating water pressure. 2) The increase of the volume of the air in the layer increases the liquified depth. Especially the very small amount of the air affects the liquefaction significantly. 3) The liquefied depth decrese rapidly with the increase of the compressibility coefficient of the sand. 4) In the range beyond a certain value of the permeability coefficient the liquified depth decrease with the increase of the coefficient.
We analyzed the behavior of the lining segments considering the middle slab and lateral pressure coefficients when planning the construction of a duplex tunnel for the underground network. Reviewed segment lining analysis for research, the analytical model was determined for duplex tunnel. Also reviewed the vertical load, and a load of middle slab is considered the static load and the live load by vehicles. Section force by middle slabs a load applied was mainly generated in the lower tunnel had the greatest effect on the bending moment. In addition, the bending moment acting direction changes appeared with a large variable, and the section force according to the load applied to the middle slab is relatively constant and the effect on the segment lining from the smallest section force of the lateral pressure coefficient of 1.00 was found to occur appears most significantly. As a result of this research to identify the behavior of the slab and the segment lining by the effect of the lateral pressure coefficient (K) of the duplex tunnel will be able to present a method of the duplex tunnel structure is reasonable and economical design.
An analytical solution procedure is described to estimate the developed passive lateral earth Pressures behind a vertical rigid retaintng wall rotating about its toe into a mass of cohesionless soil. Various stases of wall rotation, starting from an at-rest state to an initial Passive state to a full Passive state, are considered in the analysis. Condition of failure defined by a modified Mohr-coulomb criterion, together with equilibrium conditions, is used to obtain the necessary equations for the solution. Using methods of stress characteristics and numerical finite difference, a complete solution within and on the boundaries of the entire solution domain is made possible. The variations of the soil shear strength and the wall friction at various depths and stages of wall rotation are also taken into account in the analysis. The results predicted by the developed method of analysis are compared with those obtained from the experimental model tests on loose and dense sand. The comparisons show good agreements at various stages of retaining wall rotation Fin- ally, results of analytical parametric study are presented to demonstrate the effects of wall fric- tion on the resultant thrust and distribution of developed lateral earth pressures.
In this study, the centrifugal tests were performed to evaluate the behavior of reinforced retaining wall that allows the settlement of reinforcement strip. To analyze the stability of reinforced retaining wall, which drives the settlement of reinforcement strip, the results were compared with the conventional reinforced retaining wall. In the centrifugal tests, the aluminum plate for the face was used and the aluminum foil was used as a reinforcement. The decomposed granite soil was adopted as a backfill. As a result, the settlement free reinforced retaining wall reached to the failure at 80g-level. In contrast, the conventional reinforced retaining wall was collapsed at 69g-level. It means that the settlement free reinforced retaining wall has the stronger stability than the conventional reinforced retaining wall. Also, vertical earth pressure of the settlement free reinforced retaining wall near the base of wall was higher 16% than that of the conventional reinforced retaining wall.
The characteristics of the rainfall events on the Korean peninsula have been investigated by means of regional and global observational data collected from 1954 to 2004 with an emphasis on extreme cases $80\;mm\;day^{-1}$. According to our analysis, long-term annual rainfall anomalies show an increasing trend. This trend is pronounced in the month of August, when both the amount of monthly rainfall and the frequency of extreme events increase significantly. Composite maps on August during the 8 wet years reveal warm SST anomalies over the eastern Philippine Sea which are associated with enhanced convection and vertical motion and intensified positive SLP over central Eurasia during August. The rainfall pattern suggests that the most significant increase in moisture supply over the southern parts of China and Korea in August is associated with positive SLP changes over Eurasia and negative SLP changes over the subtropical western Pacific off the east coast of south China. The frequent generation of typhoons over the warm eastern Philippine Sea and their tracks appear to influence the extreme rainfall events in Korea during the month of August. The typhoons in August mainly passed the western coast of Korea, resulting in the frequent occurrence of extreme rainfall events in this region. Furthermore, anomalous cyclonic circulations over the eastern Philippine Sea also promoted the generation of tropical cyclones. The position of pressure systems - positive SLP over Eurasia and negative SLP over the subtropical Pacific - in turn provided a pathway for typhoons. The moisture is then effectively transported further north toward Korea and east toward the southern parts of China during the extreme rainfall period.

Freezing rain is a phenomenon when precipitation falls as a liquid rain drop, but freezes when it comes into contact with surfaces or objects. In this study, we investigated the predictability of freezing rain and its characteristics, which are strongly related with the occurrence of black ice using synoptic scale meteorological observation data. Two different cases occurred at 2012 were analyzed and in the presented cases, freezing rain often occurs in the low-level low pressure with the warm front. The warm front due to the lower cyclone make suitable environment in which snow falling from the upper layer can change into supercooled water. The $0^{\circ}C$ temperature line to generate supercooling water is located at an altitude of 850 hPa in the vertical temperature distribution. And the ground temperature remained below zero, as is commonly known as a condition for black ice formation. It is confirmed that the formation rate of freezing rain is higher when the thickness after 1000-850 hPa is 1290-1310 m and the thickness of 850-700 hPa layer is larger than 1540 m in both cases. It can also be used to predict and estimate the generation of freezing rain by detecting and analyzing bright bands in radar observation.
Super-refraction of radar beams tends to occur primarily under a particular vertical structure of temperature and water vapor pressure profiles. A quality control process for the removal of anomalous propagation (AP) ehcoes are required because APs are easily misidentified as precipitation echoes. For this purpose, we collected X-band polarimetric radar parameters (differential reflectivity, cross-correlation coefficient, and differential phase) only including non-precipitation echoes (super-refraction and clear-sky ground echoes) and precipitation echoes, and compared the echo types regarding the relationships among radar reflectivities, polarimetric parameters, and the membership functions. We developed a removal algorithm for the non-precipitation echoes using the texture approach for the polarimetric parameters. The presented algorithm is qualitatively validated using the S-band Jindo radar in Jeollanam-do. Our algorithm shows the successful identification and removal of AP echoes.
Study courses using cognitive conflict strategy about geological stratum were performed on the 6th grade elementary students and their conceptual changes were investigated. Some misconceptions about geological stratum that the students have are as follows: (1) stratum was formed due to volcanic eruption, (2) gneiss composes the geological stratum, (3) folds in the stratum were formed due to vertical pressure from the top. The classes had positive effects on the changes of some the misconceptions: (1) the places where the stratum is filmed, (2) the kind of rock in the stratum, and (3) the reason for folding. However, there were no significant changes in the following items: (1) the reason that every layer consists of different sizes of grains. It shows that some misconceptions can be changed easily by cognitive conflict strategy, while others can not. We checked the students who didn't change their misconceptions after the test. These students have very strong misconceptions that most of the natural phenomena on the earth's surface are due to the internal heat pressure, and volcanic activity. Another affecting the students' misconceptions are the role of teachers in class and mass media, such as TV.
