  • This study performed an OpenFOAM-based numerical modeling for simulating performance of wave reduction by a floating vertical plate. Based on the Waves2FOAM library, an internal wave generation and energy dissipation with sponge layers schemes were further implemented. The performance of wave generation and dissipation was first tested with a simple two-dimensional analysis. Then, numerical simulation was carried out with the experimental data of Briggs et al. (2001) for the two regular wave cases. In general, the modeling results agreed well with the experimental data, showing better agreement than the numerical analysis by WAMIT that is included in Briggs et al. (2001).

  • The effect of the interactive flow on convective heat transfer from two vertical isothermal parallel plates have been studied numerically by the finite difference method. The Reynolds number, Grashof number, the relative length, L$_{2}$/L$_{1}$, and the dimensionless plate spacing, b/L$_{1}$ are varied as parameters. In case of outside mean Nusselt number, left outside mean Nusselt numbers show same values as L$_{2}$/L$_{1}$ and b/L$_{1}$ increase, but right outside mean Nusselt numbers decrease as L$_{2}$/L$_{1}$ increases. The inside mean Nusselt numbers are constant at narrow spacings and increase at wide spacings as Grashof numbers increase. The optimun plate spacing on left inside mean Nusselt numbers is b/L$_{1}$=0.4 at Re=100 and b/L$_{1}$=0.3 at Re=200. For the right inside mean Nusselt number, the optimum plate spacings move to the narrow spacing as Reynolds numbers increase and L$_{2}$/L$_{1}$ decrease.

  • This paper describes the experimental study on the structural behavior of the vertical plane connection between a reinforced concrete wall and a steel plate concrete wall under out-of-plane flexural loads. The specimen was tested under a dynamic test with the use of cyclic loads. As a result of the test, ductile failure mode of vertical bars was shown under a push load and the failure load was more than that of the nominal strength of the specimen. However, the shear failure mode of the connection was confirmed in case of a pull test and thus demonstrates a need for a shear reinforcement.

  • An image processing algorithm is developed in order to recognize the type of cars, the position of a number plate and the characters on the plate. to recognize the type of cars, comparison of two images is used. One has a car image, the other is just a background image without car. After that recognition, a vertical line filter is used to find the location of the plate. Finally the simularity mehod is used to recognize the numbers on plates.

  • This study was performed to compare the abrasiveness and wear resistance of several restorative materials occluding enamel and gold alloy. Intact labial surface of bovine incisor and the plain portion of type III gold alloy were used as plate specimens, and pin specimens were fabricated using $Artglass^{(R)},\;Targis^{(R)},\;Sculpture^{(R)}$. After two-body wear test using pin and plate model, amount of vertical height loss of plate and pin specimens were measured and statically analyzed. The amount of vertical height loss of plate specimens against pin specimens were measured by a roughness measurement instrument. The amount of vertical height loss of pin specimens against plate specimens were measured by an image analyzing program after taking scanning electron micrographs of pin specimens. The results were as following. 1. As fir the amount of enamel wear. gold group showed least amount of wear. There was no significant difference among Sculpture, Targis and Artglass groups(p<0.05). 2. As for the amount of gold wear Sculpture group standed first and Targis and Artglass group followed respectively, and there was significant difference between Sculpture and Artglass groups(p<0.05). 3. As for the amount of restorative materials against enamel, Artglass group showed greatest, and there was no significant difference among gold. Sculpture, Targis groups(p<0.05). 4. As for the amount of restorative materials against gold, Artglass group standed first and Targis and Sculpture group followed respectively, and there was significant difference among each groups(p<0.05).

  • In this paper, the ultimate pullout capacity of a vertical plate strip anchors in cohesion-less soil is analyzed with the consideration of active and passive state of equilibrium in the soil. K$\ddot{o}$tter's equation is used to compute the active and passive thrusts (along with their point of application) which are subsequently used in the analysis in which, all the equation of equilibrium are properly interpreted. A comparison of the results with the experimental results vis-$\grave{a}$-vis available theoretical/empirical solutions shows that, the proposed analysis provides a better estimate of the pullout capacity.

  • Continuously monitoring of Horizontal and Vertical movements in vulnerable areas due to earthquakes and volcanic activities is vital. These geohazard activities are the result of a slow deformation rate at the tectonic plate boundaries. The recent development of GPS (Global Positioning System) technology has made it possible to attain a millimeter level changes in the Earth's crust. This study used continuously observed GPS data at the flank of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcanic Mountain to determine crustal motion caused by impinging volcano from mantle convention. We analyzed 8 GPS observed from June 2016 to Dec 2019 using a well-documented Global Kalman Filter GAMIT/GLOBK software. The resulting velocity from GAMIT/GLOBK analysis was then used to compute the relative motion of our study area with respect to Nubia plate. Our analysis discovered a minor motion of less than 5mm/year in both horizontal and vertical components.

  • Finite element buckling analysis of insulated transition flue ducts is carried out to determine the critical buckling load multipliers when subjected to axial compression for design process. Through this investigation, the results of numerical computations to examine the buckling strength for different possible duct shapes (cylinder, and circular-to-square) are presented. The load multipliers are determined through detailed buckling analysis taking into account the effects of geometrical construction and duct plate thickness which have great influence on the buckling load. Enhancement in the buckling capacity of such ducts by the addition of horizontal and vertical stiffeners is also investigated. Several models with varying dimensions and plate thicknesses are examined to obtain the linear buckling capacities against duct dimensions. The percentage improvement in the buckling capacity due to the addition of vertical stiffeners and horizontal Stiffeners is shown to be as high as three times for some cases. The study suggests that the best location of the horizontal stiffener is at 0.25 of duct depth from the bottom to achieve the maximum buckling capacity. A design equation estimating the buckling strength of geometrically perfect cylindrical-to-square shell is developed by using regression analysis accurately with approximately 4% errors.

  • This paper is a study on the model of simultaneous heat and mass transfer process in the absorption of refrigerant vapor into a lithium bromide solution of water-cooled vertical plate absorber. The model can predict temperature and concentration profiles as well as the effect of Reynolds number on them. Also. the variations of the absorption heat and mass fluxes. and the heat and mass transfer coefficients have been investigated. The numerical result shows that the interface temperature and concentration decrease as film Reynolds number does. The absorption heat and mass fluxes, and the heat and mass transfer coefficients get their maximum values adjacent to the inlet solution. Analyses on a constant wall temperature condition have been also carried out to exam the reliability of the present numerical method by comparing to previous investigations.
