Following the dynamic property analysis and elaboration, linear response spectrum analysis (RSA) and response history analysis (RHA) were conducted on a representative hyperbolic cooling towers (HCT) in present study. The seismic responses in tower shell were illustrated in detail, including the internal force amplitude, modal contribution, influence from damping ratio, comparison of results got from RSA and RHA and especially the latitude distributions of internal forces. The results show that the eigenmodes could be classified in a new method into four types according to their mode shapes and only the lateral bending modes and vertical stretching modes are meaningful for horizontal and vertical earthquake correspondingly. The bending modes and seismic deformation display the same feature which is global lateral bending accompanied by minute circular flow displacement of section. This feature also decides the latitude distributions of internal forces as sine or cosine. Moreover, the following method is also proposed for approximate estimation of internal force amplitudes without time-consuming response history analysis: getting the response spectrums of the selected ground accelerations and then comparing values of response spectrums at the natural period of first lateral bending mode because it is always prime dominant for horizontal seismic responses.

Long-short pile composite foundations bear both vertical and horizontal loads in many engineering applications. This study used indoor model tests to determine the horizontal bearing mechanism of a composite foundation with long and short piles under horizontal loads. A custom experimental device was developed to prevent excessive eccentricity of the vertical loading device caused by the horizontal displacement. ABAQUS software was used to analyze the influence of the load size and cushion thickness on the horizontal bearing mechanism. The results reveal that a large vertical load leads to soil densification and increases the horizontal bearing capacity of the composite foundation. The magnitude of the horizontal displacement of the pile and the horizontal load borne by the pile are related to the piles' positions. Due to different pile lengths, the long piles exhibit long pile effects and experience bending deformation, whereas the short piles rotate around a point (0.2 L from the pile bottom) as the horizontal load increases. Selecting a larger cushion thickness significantly improves the horizontal load sharing capacity of the soil and reduces the horizontal displacement of the pile top.
Formation used as trackbed foundation for providing vertical bearing capacity onto rail foundation are composed of crushed stones usually with certain type of grain size distribution. Permanent deformation in trackbed foundation can be generated by increasing number of load repetition due to train traffic increases, causing track irregularity. In this study, a specially prepared trackbed foundation materials (M-40) used in Korea has been tested using a large repetitive triaxial compression apparatus in order to understand resilient and permanent deformation characteristics of the material. From these test results, resilient and permanent deformation characteristic are analyzed so that a permanent deformation model is developed which can consider number of load repetition N, confining stress (${\sigma}_3$), shear stress ratio(${\tau}/{\tau}_f$) and stiffness of the material.

The alternative material for cement has been attracting attention in construction projects. Especially, the alkali activated slag(hereafter, AAS) concrete is able to use for a structural vertical member because of 40MPa of compressive strength, However, the research about time-dependent deformation such as creep which is important to strength member is insufficient. Therefore, in this study, experiments were performed with respect to time-dependent deformation including the drying shrinkage and creep deformation of AAS concrete. The creep deformed ratio of AAS concrete was more than OPC concrete by approximately 4.3% and the dry shrinkage deformation of AAS concrete was more than OPC concrete by approximately 69%. The large amount of sodium silicate, alkali activator, is added causing temperature crack than promoted drying and drying creep which is confirmed by water ration test and SEM.
The Long Valley area and its surroundings are part of a major volcano system where inflation occurred in the resurgent dome in the 1990s. We used ENVISAT data to monitor surface deformation of the Long Valley area and its surroundings after the inflation, from 2003-2010. To retrieve the time series of the deformation, we applied the refined Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) algorithm which is improved using an iterative approach to minimize unwrapping error. Moreover, ascending and descending data were used to decompose the horizontal and vertical deformation in detail. To confirm refined SBAS results, we used GPS dataset. The InSAR errors are estimated as ${\pm}1.0mm/yr$ and ${\pm}0.8mm/yr$ from ascending and descending tracks, respectively. Compare to the previous study of 1990s over the Long Valley and its surroundings, Paoha Island and CASA geothermal area still subside. The deformation pattern in the Long Valley area during the study period (2003-2010) went through both subsidence (2003-2007) and slow uplift(2007-2010) episodes. Our research also shows no deformation signal near McGee Creek. Our study provided a better understanding of the surface changes of the indicators in the 1990s and 2000s.
When the shear deformation occurs on the slope reinforced with soil nail, a passive earth pressure is induced on the ground around the soil nail and the increase of shear deformation causes the earth pressure variation of the ground and the deformation and member force change of the soil nail. In this study, the shear behavior of the soil nail was analyzed experimentally by inducing the shear deformation in the vertical direction of the soil nail using a large-scale direct shear test equipment and it was verified through numerical analysis. The shear test was performed on the bonded length (6D, 8D, 10D and 12D) of the soil nail separated from the shear surface. As a result, it was observed that the continuous increase of the shear deformation caused the damage of the grout and the effect according to the bonded length was analyzed. Through the model test and the numerical analysis, it was confirmed that the transfer length of the soil nail was 0.2~0.22m, which is larger than 0.1m suggested in the previous study, and the shear zone was in the range of 0.6m from the shear surface.
In this paper, a deformation measurement technology for nuclear fuel rods is proposed. The deformation measurement system includes a high-definition CMOS image sensor, a lens, a semiconductor laser line beam marker, and optical and mechanical accessories. The basic idea of the proposed deformation measurement system is to illuminate the outer surface of a fuel rod with a collimated laser line beam at an angle of 45 degrees or higher. For this method, it is assumed that a nuclear fuel rod and the optical axis of the image sensor for observing the rod are vertically composed. The relative motion of the fuel rod in the horizontal direction causes the illuminated laser line beam to move vertically along the surface of the fuel rod. The resulting change of the laser line beam position on the surface of the fuel rod is imaged as a parabolic beam in the high-definition CMOS image sensor. An ellipse model is then extracted from the parabolic beam pattern. The center coordinates of the ellipse model are taken as the feature of the deformed fuel rod. The vertical offset of the feature point of the nuclear fuel rod is derived based on the displacement of the offset in the horizontal direction. Based on the experimental results for a nuclear fuel rod sample with a formation of surface crud, an inspection resolution of 50 ${\mu}m$ is achieved using the proposed method. In terms of the degree of precision, this inspection resolution is an improvement of more than 300% from a 150 ${\mu}m$ resolution, which is the conventional measurement criteria required for the deformation of neutron irradiated fuel rods.
The geomorphic deformation of the alluvial fans by tectonic movement was investigated along the lineaments of the northern part of the Bulguksa fault system. Based on the aerial photographs interpretation and field surveys Bulguksa fault system was identified as an active reverse fault which has displaced the Quaternary fan deposits. Bulguksa fault system strikes for the direction of NW-SE and N-S. These two lineaments of active fault are crossing at Jinty village in Kyungju city and the fault plane forms here almost vertical dip. Thelateral pressures from the two directions have possibly influenced on the formation of the vertical dip at Jinty village. It should be resulted from that the two pressures responsible for the active reverse fault at which the one with the NW-SE strike thrusts the hanging wall of Tohamsan block southwestward and the other pressure with the N-S jstrike thrusts it westwrd over the foot wall of the fan deposits. The marine oxygen isotope stage 8(0.30-0.25 Ma. BP) and stage 6(0.20-0.14 Ma. BP) are presumed to be the ages of high and middle surfaces of the alluvial fan, repectively. The vertical dispiacements on the high surface along the Bulguksa fault system are about 10.5m at Ha-dong, 9.5-10.5m at Jinhyun-dong, and about 10m at Jinty village. And the vertical displacement on the middle surface was measured about 6m high at Ha-dong. The average slip rate of vertical displacements is calculated about 0.03-0.043mm/y.

Soil deformation on the off-load ground is significantly affected by soil conditions, such as soil type, water content, and etc. Thus, the soil characteristics should be estimated for predicting vehicle movements on the off-load conditions. The plate-sinkage test, a widely-used experimental test for predicting the wheel-soil interaction, provides the soil characteristic parameters from the relationship between soil stress and plate sinkage. In this study, soil stress under the plate-sinkage situation is calculated by the DEM (Discrete Element Method) model. We developed a virtual soil bin with DEM to obtain the vertical reaction forces under the plate pressing the soil surface. Also parametric studies to investigate effects of DEM model parameters, such as, particle density, Young's modulus, dynamic friction, rolling friction, and adhesion, on the characteristic soil parameters were performed.

Thermal deformation of machine origin of machine tools due to internal and external heat sources has been the most important problem to fabricate products with higher accuracy and performance. In order to solve this problem, GMDH models were constructed to estimate thermal deformation of machine origin for a vertical machining ceneter through measurement of temperature data of specific points on the machine tool. These models are nonlinear equations with high-order polynomials and implemented in a multilayered perceptron type network structure. Input variables and orders are automatically selected by correlation and optimization procedure. Sensors with small influence are deleted automatically in this algorithm. It was shown that the points of temperature measurement can be reduced without sacrificing the estimation accuracy of $\pm$5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. From the experimental result, it was confirmed that GMDH methodology was superior to least square models to estimate the thermal behavior of machine tools.
