The role of quantitative nondestructive evaluation of defects is becoming more important to assure the reliability and the safety of structure, which can eventually be used for residual life evaluation of structure on the basis of fracture mechanics approach. Although ultrasonic technique is one of the most widely used techniques for application of practical field test among the various nondestructive evaluation technique, there are still some problems to be solved in effective extraction and classification of ultrasonic signal from their noisy ultrasonic waveforms. Therefore, crack size determination through a neural network based on the back-propagation algorithm using back-scattered ultrasonic signals is established in this study. For this purpose, aluminum plate containing vertical or inclined surface breaking crack with different crack length was used to receive the back-scattered ultrasonic signals by pulse echo method. Some features extracted from these signals and sizes of cracks were used to train neural network and the neural network's output of the crack size are compared with the true answer.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the problem of crack repair materials and methods in existing concrete structure and to propose the effective injection method on crack repair by packer type. The result of this study is as follows. It is investigated that the crack width in the inner matrix of concrete structure is decreased about 30-40% than that in the surface of the concrete structure. Also it is showed that the possibility which could be monolithic with injection part became higher if the injection part is installed near to surface of concrete on the punching method to vertical direction against crack area. The injection of repair material can be poured smoothly under about $10N/mm^2$ pressure on the condition that cracks are monolithic with injection part without dust by drill. The method which is effective injection for a repair material is the punching method in compliance with coredrill. But, the research continuously is necessary about minimum injection pressure.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the problem of crack repair materials and methods in existing concrete structure and to propose the effective injection method on crack repair by packer type. The result of this study is as follows. It is investigated that the crack width in the inner matrix of concrete structure is decreased about 30-40% than that in the sulfate of the concrete structure. Also it is showed that the possibility which could be monolithic with injection part became higher if the injection part if installed near to surface of concrete on the punching method to vertical direction against crack area. The injection of repair material can be poured smoothly under about $10N/mm^2$ pressure on the condition that cracks are monolithic with injection part without dust by drill. The effective method to pour the injection repair material is the punching method by coredrill but several research to minimize injection pressure should be continually.
In this paper, the scattering of harmonic elastic anti-plane shear waves by two collinear cracks in functionally graded materials is investigated by means of nonlocal theory. The traditional concepts of the non-local theory are extended to solve the fracture problem of functionally graded materials. To overcome the mathematical difficulties, a one-dimensional non-local kernel is used instead of a two-dimensional one for the anti-plane dynamic problem to obtain the stress field near the crack tips. To make the analysis tractable, it is assumed that the shear modulus and the material density vary exponentially with coordinate vertical to the crack. By use of the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of a pair of triple integral equations, in which the unknown variable is the displacement on the crack surfaces. To solve the triple integral equations, the displacement on the crack surfaces is expanded in a series of Jacobi polynomials. Unlike the classical elasticity solutions, it is found that no stress singularities are present at crack tips.
A gas turbine consists of an upstream compressor and a downstream turbine with a combustion chamber, and also the compressor and the turbine are generally coupled using a single shaft. Many casing bolts are used to assemble two horizontally separated casings, the gas turbine casing and the compressor casing, in both of axial and vertical directions. Because drilled holes for casing bolts in vertical direction are often too close to drilled holes for casing bolts in axial direction, one can observe cracks in the area frequently during operations of a gas turbine. In this study of the root cause analysis for the cracking initiating from the drilled holes of the casings of a gas turbine, the finite element analysis(FEA) was applied to evaluate the thermal and mechanical characteristics of the casings. By applying the field operation data recorded from combined cycle power plants for FEA, thermal and thermo-mechanical characteristics of a gas turbine are analyzed. The crack is initiated at the geometrical weak point, but it is found that the maximum stress is relieved when the same type of cracks is introduced on purpose during FEA. So, it is verified that the local fracture could be delayed by machining the same type of defects near the hole for casing flange bolts of the gas turbine, where the crack is initiated.

Identification and sizing of surface breaking vertical cracks using angle beam ultrasonic testing in practical situation quite often become very difficult tasks due to the presence of non-relevant signals caused by geometric reflectors. The present work introduces effective and systematic approaches to take care of such a difficulty by use oi angle beam ultrasonic testing models that can predict the expected signals from various targets very accurately. Specifically, the model-based TIFD (Technique for Identification of Flaw signals using Deconvolution) is Proposed for the identification of the crack tip signals from the non-relevant geometric reflection signals. In addition, the model-based Size-Amplitude Curve is introduced for the reliable sizing of surface breaking vertical cracks.
A mechanical model was developed to predict the behavior of point-loaded RC slender beams (a/d > 2.5) without stirrups. It is commonly accepted by most researchers that a diagonal tension crack plays a predominant role in the failure mode of these beams, but the failure mechanism of these members is still debatable. In this paper, it was assumed that diagonal tension failure was triggered by the concrete cover splitting due to the dowel action at the initial location of diagonal tension cracks, which propagate from flexural cracks. When concrete cover splitting occurred, the shape of a diagonal tension crack was simultaneously developed, which can be determined from the principal tensile stress trajectory. This fictitious crack rotates onto the crack tip with load increase. During the rotation, all forces acting on the crack (i.e, dowel force of longitudinal bars, vertical component of concrete tensile force, shear force by aggregate interlock, shear force in compression zone) were calculated by considering the kinematical conditions such as crack width or sliding. These forces except for the shear force in the compression zone were uncoupled with respect to crack width and sliding by the proposed constitutive relations for friction along the crack. Uncoupling the shear forces along the crack was aimed at distinguishing each force from the total shear force and clarifying the failure mechanism of RC slender beams without stirrups. In addition, a proposed method deriving the dowel force of longitudinal bars made it possible to predict the secondary shear failure. The proposed model can be used to predict not only the entire behavior of point-loaded RC slender shear beams, but also the ultimate shear strength. The experiments used to validate the proposed model are reported in a companion paper.
This research was carried out to examine the optimum design conditions of a vertical small-scale milling machine where the rough rice is processed directly into the white rice in one pass. Effects of the main spindle speed, feed screw pitch and ceramic coating length of the roller on various milling characteristics such as white rice processing capacity, electric energy consumption, rice temperature increase, broken rice ratio, moisture reduction, outlet force and crack ratio increase were studied. The results are as follows. 1. The maximum white rice processing capacity and the lowest crack ratio increase, were obtained from a machine with specification: main spindle speed of 970rpm having a feed screw pitch of 19㎜. 2. The minimum electric energy consumption was obtained with the main spindle speeds of 900 and 970rpm respectively having a feed screw pitch of 19㎜. 3. The rice temperature was increased as the feed screw pitch decreased and the main spindle speed increased. 4. Broken rice ratio was relatively low with the range of 0.8∼1.3%. 5. Moisture content loss was with the range of 0.05∼0.4%. 6. The highest outlet force was 0.72kg$\_$f/ with 900rpm of the main spindle speed and 19㎜ of the feed screw pitch and the lowest outlet force was 0.18∼0.34kg$\_$f/ with 970rpm of the main spindle speed and 16㎜ of the feed screw pitch. 7. The optimum design conditions for the vertical small-scale milling machine were obtained at 970rpm of the main spindle speed, 19㎜ of the feed screw pitch and 20㎜ of the ceramics coating length.

This study was to secure the safety of poor appearance distribution concrete poles effectively and to reduce the replacement costs of them by developing a soundness evaluation index. The researcher of this study investigated poor appearance types of concrete pole, collected 53 of test samples, and tested pole strength. As a result of strength test, only 17 percent of poor appearance concrete poles were below 2.0 of safety factor spec. As results of multiple regression analysis, it is verified that surface air void, horizontal crack, net-shaped crack, elapsed year, vertical crack, and deterioration in concrete compressive strength have statistically negative effects on safety factor of concrete poles in a significant level. The researcher set up a soundness evaluation index by using multiple regression equation, and suggested that poor appearance concrete poles should be replaced or reinforced only in case of soundness evaluation score of 150 or above.
In this study, linear and non-linear response of a masonry wall that includes an opening was presented. The masonry wall was modeled with two-dimensional finite elements. Smeared crack model that includes the strain softening behavior was selected to the masonry wall material. For the numerical application, linear and non-linear analyses of the masonry wall were carried out using east-west and vertical components of the 1992 Erzincan and 2003 $Bing{\ddot{o}}l$ earthquake acceleration records. Linear and non-linear solutions were compared each other. The displacement and stress results at the selected points of the masonry wall and crack propagation in the masonry wall were presented for both earthquake acceleration records.
