  • The spectral aerosol optical thickness of vertical air columns were measured by a ground-based multi-channel sunphotometer at the BAPMoN station(36$^{\circ}$31'N, 126$^{\circ}$19'E) in Anmyon Island, Korea, from 1 March 1998 to 31 May 1998. We used the data of three yellow sand and two clear sky days in order to analyze the temporal variations in aerosol optical thickness at the station. The basic aerosol optical thickness generally represented smaller than 0.3 in a clear sky and the range 0.5 to 1.1 in yellow sand. Especially the aerosol optical thickness represented larger than 0.9 in a heavy yellow sand. It was found that the aerosol optical thickness of yellow sand was highly increased in comparison with the case of a clear sky andparticles larger than 0.5$mu extrm{m}$ were also increased in the spectral distribution of aerosol volume during yellow sand. Consequently the spectral variations in tropospheric aerosol caused by yellow sand were determined by the number concentration of particles larger than 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the magnitude of yellow sand.

  • An experimental study was made of a large-scale vortical structure over a backward-facing step. The Reynolds number based on the step height was R $e_{H}$ =33,000. To recognize the large-scale vortex, three components of velocity were measured. The measurements were performed in the recirculation zone (x/H=4.0) and the reattachment zone(x/H=7.5). To measure the wall pressure fluctuations in a turbulent flow over a backward-facing step, a 32-channel microphone array was installed beneath the wall in the streamwise and spanwise directions. From the measured pressure field, the size of large-scale vortex was obtained. As a detailed study, a conditionally-averaging technique was employed to characterize the coherent structure of the large-scale vortex. To see the relationship between the flow field and the relevant spatial mode of the pressure field, the spatial box filtering (SBF) was examined. A cross-correlation between velocity and pressure fluctuations was performed to identify the structure and the length scale of the large-scale vortex.x.

  • We describe here the Korea ocean prediction system that closely resembles operational numerical weather prediction systems. This prediction system will be served for real-time forecasts. The core of the system is a three-dimensional primitive equation numerical circulation model, based on ${\sigma}$-coordinate. Remotely sensed multi-channel sea surface temperature (MCSST) is imposed at the surface. Residual subsurface temperature is assimilated through the relationship between vertical temperature structure function and residual of sea surface height (RSSH) using an optimal interpolation scheme. A unified grid system, named as [K-E-Y], that covers the entire seas around Korea is used. We present and compare hindcasting results during 1990-1999 from a model forced by MCSST without incorporating RSSH data assimilation and the one with both MCSST and RSSH assimilated. The data assimilation is applied only in the East Sea, hence the comparison focuses principally on the mesoscale features prevalent in the East Sea. It is shown that the model with the data assimilation exhibits considerable skill in simulating both the permanent and transient mesoscale features in the East Sea.

  • The purpose of this study is to make a design guideline in designing constructed wetland which can treat water quality both of point and nonpoint source water pollution. It focuses on structural aspects of two case studies of constructed wetland applying SSB(Sustainable Structured wetland Biotope) system in Korea. The constructed wetland of Lake Ju-am which was constructed in 2002 by Environmental Management Corporation, was designed by applying SSB system. It shows higher removal efficiency than expected - 56% of BOD removal efficiency, 60% of T-N removal, and 76% of T-P removal efficiency. In two cases, total wetland areal extents were calculated referred to treatment efficiency. The system is consist of micro-cell structures : inflow channel, forebay, multiple wetland cells and micro-pool. When designing constructed wetland appropriate in local area, the total organic system of vertical and horizontal structure : geology, hydrology, land use, and ecological surroundings of the sites should be considered totally.

  • This paper describes an experimental study on the droplet formation and the subsequent motion in a microchannel having a cross junction. While one kind of liquid (pure water or water-surfactant mixture) is drawn into a horizontal inlet channel, the other kind (oil) is introduced through two vertical inlet channels. Due to the effect of surface tension on the interface between the two fluids, the droplets of the first fluid are formed near the cross junction. In this study, we have found that the droplet formation is affected even by slight difference in the surface tension. When the surface tension between two fluids is decreased, the droplet size is decreased in order to keep the equilibration between the pressure and the surface tension. In addition, the time interval between each of the droplet formations is decreased and the distance between droplets is also decreased when the surface tension is decreased.

  • Finite element model capable of solving coupled deformation-fluid diffusion equations for the fully saturated porous medium was developed using Galerkin's residual method. This model was used to study the mechanical and hydraulic behaviors of unconsolidated sediment near South Harbor, Pusan. The vertical displacement of top surface clay sediment, when subjected to the external load, is significantly affected by the excessive pore pres- sure buildup and its decay due to the pore fluid diffusion. The sand deposit overlain by the much less permeable clay layer serves as a flow channel. Consequently, the fluid diffusion due to pore pressure difference is significantly facilitated, which also affects the diffusion-dependent sediment deformation.

  • A desing technique of 8 ports variable wave impedance generator (8P-VWIG) is described. The design technique employs not only a numerical algorithm to find the structure with arbitrary characteristic impedance, but also a numerical solution to analyze the uniform elementrognentic fields established inside the generator. The 8P-VWIG so obtained is shown to have good performance with the VSWR of less than 1.4 at any frequency of interest below which higher order mode begin to propagate. The measured first resonant frequency is 152.1 MHz. The 8P-VWIG is designed based on the concept of an expanded multi-transmission line(8 channel). It is especially useful for the electronmagnetic interference(EMI) and electronmagnetic susceptibility(EMS) testing since it maximizes usable test crosssectional area, and its is easy change the polarization, vertical or horizontal, of field.

  • A soudy on the distrobution and seasonal changes of the benthic macrovertebrates community was performed on the 5 intertidal rocky shores of Chujado in the Cheju-Channel during four seasons from March 1996 to February 1997.The macroinvertebrates identified in Chujado totally composed of 9 phyla, 18 classes, 38 orers, 147 species. The macroinvertebrates idetified according to the stations were 9 phyla, 138 species in Sinyangri(ST. 1); 8 phyla, 134 species in Younghungri(ST. 4);and 8 phyla, 131 species in Daeseori(ST. 5); The species diversities of the lower intertidal zones were higher than those of middle and upper intertidal zones, however, the seasonal appearance in number of species was not different among the stations. The vertically distributed dominant species in intertidal zone were; Nodifittorina exigua and Nerita japponica in the supralittoral zones; Monodonta labio labil and Buccinulum ferrea in the upper zones; Septifer keenae and Lunella coronata corensis in the middle zones; Purpura clavigara, S. keenae and Pomatoleios krausii in the submiddle zones; and Actinia mesembryanthemum, Tetracliata squamosa japonica and N. schrenckii in the lower zones. The intertidal community structures between Chujado and Cheju coast showed that Chujado composed of fewer number of species and lower value of species diversity and richness indices than Cheju coast.

  • To delineate subglacial and englacial images of the western Fourcade Glacier in Antarctica, GPR data were acquired along a 470 m profile in November 2006. Signature deconvolution, migration velocity analysis, and finite difference depth migration were effective in increasing vertical resolution, obtaining the velocity function, and yielding clear depth images of the mixed-phase single-channel data, respectively. The source signature was extracted through stacking reflection signals from the basement. The deconvolution successfully compressed the source signatures to increase temporal resolution and attenuated reverberations. Medium velocities were analyzed with 112 diffraction events by the constant-velocity migration method based on the Stolt algorithm. Finally, depth migration based on the finite difference algorithm provided clear englacial and subglacial images in the laterally-varying velocity field.

  • Tidal currents and tidal residual currents in Chinhae Bay are investigated by the field observations and hydraulic experiments during the spring tide and neap tide. The horizontal and vertical scales of the model are l/2,000 and 1/159, respectively. The hydraulic model results roughly coincide with the field data. Maximum tidal currents during the spring tide and neap tide in the central channel of Chinhae Bay are strong as about 90 and 30cm/s respectively, and strong tidal residual currents take place. Maximum tidal currents during the spring tide and neap tide in the western and northern part of the bay are weak as below 30 and 10cm/s respectively, and also tidal residual currents are weak. Tidal residual currents rotating clockwise occur in the central part of the bay. Northward tidal residual currents in the northern part of Kajo-do are predominant, whereas southward ones in the southern part of Kajo-do are remarkable. The surface currents in the bay depend strongly on the wind and river flow, and it seems to be remarkable during the neap tide.
