Development of a High Resolution Cinematic Particle Image Velocimetry and Its Application to measurement of Unsteady Complex Turbulent Flows (고분해능 Cinematic PIV 시스템의 개발과 비정상 복잡 난류유동측정에의 응용)

  • A high resolution digital cinematic Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) has been developed. The system consists of a high speed CCD camera, a continuous Ar-ion laser and a computer with camera controller. To improve the spatial resolution, we adopt a Recursive Technique for velocity interrogation. At first, we obtain a velocity vector for a larger interrogation window size based on the conventional two-frame cross-correlation PIV analysis using the FFT algorithm. Based on the knowing velocity information, more spatially resolved velocity vectors are obtained in the next iteration step with smaller interrogation windows. The correct velocity vector at the first step is found to be critical, so we apply a Multiple Correlation Validation(MCV) technique in order to decrease the spurious vectors. The MCV technique turns out to improve SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) of the correlation table. The developed cinematic PIV method has been applied to the measurement of the unsteady flow characteristics of a Rushton turbine mixer. A total of 3,245 instantaneous velocity vectors were successfully obtained with 4 ms time resolution. The acquired spatial resolution corresponds the performance of the conventional high resolution digital PIV system using a $1K{\times}1K$ CCD camera.

  • In this paper, we propose a new fault diagnosis monitoring system using gyro sensor-based angular velocity calculation for blades of the wind turbine system. First, the proposed system generates the angular velocity dataset for the rotation speed of the normal blade. Using the dataset, we estimate and evaluate the state of blades for the wind turbine by comparing the current state with the pre-calculated normal state. In the experimental results, the angular velocity of the normal state was higher than $360^{\circ}/s$ while that of the damaged blades was lower than $360^{\circ}/s$ and the standard deviation of the angular velocity was significantly increased.

Real-Time Water Wave Simulation with Surface Advection based on Mass Conservancy

  • In this paper, we present a real-time physical simulation model of water surfaces with a novel method to represent the water mass flow in full three dimensions. In a physical simulation model, the state of the water surfaces is represented by a set of physical values, including height, velocity, and the gradient. The evolution of the velocity field in previous works is handled by a velocity solver based on the Navier-Stokes equations, which occurs as a result of the unevenness of the velocity propagation. In this paper, we integrate the principle of the mass conservation in a fluid of equilateral density to upgrade the height field from the unevenness, which in mathematical terms can be represented by the divergence operator. Thus the model generates waves induced by horizontal velocity, offering a simulation that puts forces added in all direction into account when calculating the values for height and velocity for the next frame. Other effects such as reflection off the boundaries, and interactions with floating objects are involved in our method. The implementation of our method demonstrates to run with fast speed scalable to real-time rates even for large simulation domains. Therefore, our model is appropriate for a real-time and large scale water surface simulation into which the animator wishes to visualize the global fluid flow as a main emphasis.

  • It is essential to develop an algorithm for the estimate of link travel velocity and for the supply and control of travel information in the context of intelligent transportation information system. The paper proposes the fuzzy logic based prediction of link travel velocity. Three factors such as time, date and velocity are considered as major components to represent the travel situation. In the fuzzy modeling, those factors were expressed by fuzzy membership functions. We acquire position/velocity data through GPS antenna with PDA embedded probe vehicles. The link travel velocity is calculated using refined GPS data and the prediction results are compared with actual data for its accuracy.

Shear wave velocity of sands subject to large strain triaxial loading

  • Shear wave velocities of three selected sandy soils subject to drained triaxial compression test were continuously measured using the bender elements. The shear wave velocity during isotropic compression, as widely recognized, increased as confining pressure increased and they were correlated well. However, during drained shearing, the mean effective stress could no further provide a suitable correlation. The shear wave velocity during this stage was almost constant with respect to the mean effective stress. The vertical stress was found to be more favorable at this stage (since confining stress was kept constant). When sample was attained its peak stress, the shear wave velocity reduced and deviated from the previously existed trend line. This was probably caused by the non-uniformity induced by the formation of shear band. Subsequently, void ratios computed based on external measurements could not provide reasonable fitting to the initial stage of post-peak shear wave velocity. At very large strain levels after shear band formation, the digital images revealed that sample may internally re-arrange itself to be in a more uniform loose stage. This final stage void ratio estimated based on the proposed correlation derived during pre-peak state was close to the value of the maximum void ratio.

Acoustic Estimation of Phase Velocity of Closed-Cell Kelvin Structure based on Spectral Phase Analysis

  • In this paper, the effect of porosity on the acoustic phase velocity of the 3D printed Kelvin closed-cell structure was investigated using the spectral phase analysis. Since Kelvin cells bring about the large amount of scattering, acoustic pulses in ultrasonic measurements undergoes a distortion of waveforms due to the dispersion effect. In order to take account on the dispersion, mathematical expressions for calculating the phase velocity of longitudinal waves propagating normal to the plane of the Kelvin structure are suggested by introducing a complex wave number based on Fourier transform. 3D Kelvin structure composed of identical unit-cells, a polyhedron of 14 faces with 6 quadrilateral and 8 hexagonal faces, was developed and fabricated by 3D CAD and 3D printer to represent the micro-structure of porous materials such as aluminum foam and cancellous bone. Total nine samples of 3D Kelvin structure with different porosity were made by changing the thickness of polyhedron. Ultrasonic pulse of 1MHz center frequency was applied to the Kelvin structures for the measurement of the phase velocity of ultrasound using the TOF(time-of-flight) and the phase spectral method. From the experimental results, it was found that the acoustic phase velocity decreased linearly with the porosity.

Advanced Evacuation Analysis for Passenger Ship Using Penalty Walking Velocity Algorithm for Obstacle Avoid (장애물 회피에 페널티 보행 속도 알고리즘을 적용한 여객선 승객 탈출 시뮬레이션)

  • In this paper, advanced evacuation analysis simulation on a passenger ship is performed. Velocity based model has been implemented and used to calculate the movement of the individual passengers under the evacuation situation. The age and gender of each passenger are considered as the factors of walking speed. Flocking algorithm is applied for the passenger's group behavior. Penalty walking velocity is introduced to avoid collision between the passengers and obstacles, and to prevent the position overlap among passengers. Application of flocking algorithm and penalty walking velocity to evacuation simulation is verified through implementation of the 11 test problems in IMO (International Maritime Organization) MSC (Maritime Safety Committee) Circulation 1238.

Prediction of Flame Propagation Velocity based on the Behavior of Dust Particles (분진폭발의 입자거동을 고려한 화염전파속도의 예측)

  • Based on experimental study of lycopodium dust particles' behavior, we suggest the flame propagation model through dust clouds. With dust concentration, flame velocity reaches a maximum value at $170g/m^3$ to exceed the stoichometric concentration for lycopodium-air mixture combustion and decreases slightly in the richer side of $500g/m^3$. At $47{\sim}200g/m^3$, mean velocity of particle increases in proportion to flame velocity. As the sum of burning rate and particle velocity is approximate in flame velocity, the flame propagation velocity with lycopodium dust concentration can be estimated by the calculation and it was found that behavior of particles is useful for better understanding of dust flame propagation velocity.

  • This paper presents the velocity estimation of a mobile robot using a regular polygonal array of optical mice that are installed at the bottom of a mobile robot. First, the basic principle of the proposed velocity estimation method is explained. Second, the velocity kinematics from a mobile robot to an array of optical mice is derived as an overdetermined linear system. Third, for a given set of optical mouse readings, the mobile robot velocity is estimated based on the least squares solution to the obtained system. Finally, simulation results are given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed velocity estimation method.
