  • The characteristics of the spread of a forest fire are generally related to the attributes of combustibles, geographical features, and meteorological conditions, such as wind conditions. The most common methodology used to create a prediction model for the spread of forest fires, based on the numerical analysis of the development stages of a forest fire, is an analysis of heat energy transmission by the stage of heat transmission. When a forest fire breaks out, the analysis of the transmission velocity of heat energy is quantifiable by the spread velocity of flame movement through a physical and chemical analysis at every stage of the fire development from flame production and heat transmission to its termination. In this study, the formula used for the 1-D surface forest fire behavior prediction model, derived from a numerical analysis of the surface flame spread rate of solid combustibles, is introduced. The formula for the 1-D surface forest fire behavior prediction model is the estimated equation of the flame spread velocity, depending on the condition of wind velocity on the ground. Experimental and theoretical equations on flame duration, flame height, flame temperature, ignition temperature of surface fuels, etc., has been applied to the device of this formula. As a result of a comparison between the ROS(rate of spread) from this formula and ROSs from various equations of other models or experimental values, a trend suggesting an increasing curved line of the exponent function under 3m/s or less wind velocity condition was identified. As a result of a comparison between experimental values and numerically analyzed values for fallen pine tree leaves, the flame spread velocity reveals a prediction of an approximately 10% upward tendency under wind velocity conditions of 1 to 2m/s, and of an approximately 20% downward tendency under those of 3m/s.

  • This paper presents an effective method of precise velocity control at low speed with a low resolution encoder. Multirate observer to estimate the velocity at every DSP control period is used except a constant velocity mode. The observer corrects the estimation error when detects pulse signal. Unlike the conventional methods, the multirate estimator is stable at a low speed. However, the multirate estimator shows ripples at a constant velocity. Thus, in this paper we use a velocity prediction method which uses the present velocity from the previous average velocity to reject the ripple. In a summary, at a constant speed mode, the predicted velocity is used. Otherwise, the estimated velocity by the multirate obvserver is used. The effectiveness of the multirate observer and ripple rejection at low speed is verified through various simulations.

  • The estimation of proper prediction method and the transformation method of environmental regulation standard were carried out by measuring blasting vibration. Vibration velocity was more adequate than vibration level in the blasting design by scaled distance. Thus, design and construction mutt be controlled by vibration velocity, and it is required that the vibration velocity is transformed to vibration level to meet regulation standard. Three transformation methods were studied. First, transformation formula is derived from the shock vibration data only. The second method it the transformation by correlation equation of vibration velocity and vibration level measured at the same time. The last one is the transformation of vibration velocity by FFT. It seems to be difficult to estimate damages by these methods because that every method shows considerable error. But transformation formula of PPV component to vibration level was most practical.

  • Physical and mechanical properties of rocks are of interest in many fields, including materials science, petrophysics, geophysics and geotechnical engineering. Uniaxial compressive strength UCS is one of the key mechanical properties, while density and porosity are important physical parameters for the characterization of rocks. The economic interest of carbonate rocks is very important in chemical or biological procedures and in the field of construction. Carbonate rocks exploitation depends on their quality and their physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics. A fast, economic and reliable technique would be an evolutionary advance in the exploration of carbonate rocks. This paper discusses the ability of ultrasonic wave velocity to evaluate some mechanical and physical parameters within carbonate rocks (collected from different regions within Tunisia). The ultrasonic technique was used to establish empirical correlations allowing the estimation of UCS values, the density and the porosity of carbonate rocks. The results illustrated the behavior of ultrasonic pulse velocity as a function of the applied stress. The main output of the work is the confirmation that ultrasonic velocity can be effectively used as a simple and economical non-destructive method for a preliminary prediction of mechanical behavior and physical properties of rocks.

  • For a long road tunnel, a tunnel ventilation system may be used in order to reduce the pollution level below the required level. To control the tunnel pollution level, a closed loop control algorithm may be used. The feedforward prediction algorithm and the cascade control algorithm were developed to regulate the CO level in a tunnel. The feedforward prediction algorithm composed of the traffic estimation algorithm and the CO density prediction algorithm, and the cascade control algorithm composed of the jet fan control algorithm and the air velocity setpoint algorithm. The verification of control algorithms was carried out by dynamic models developed from the actual tunnel data. The simulation results showed that control algorithms developed for this study were effective for the control of the tunnel ventilation system.

  • This paper is concerned with the measurement of static and dynamic displacement by image processing(IP) and study for prediction method of velocity and acceleration. To measure the displacement visually, the measurement system consists of a telephoto zoom camera, ccd image device and a computer. The specific target on the white board is used to calculate the displacement of the structure. The captured image is then converted into a pixel-based data and then analyzed numerically. The limitation of the system depends on the image capturing speed and the pixel-size of image. In this paper, we developed for the displacement measurement using the image processing method. The proposed method enables us to measure the vibration measurement, velocity and acceleration directly without any contact. The current resolution of the displacement measurement is limited to 1/100 millimeter scale.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a model for the prediction of residual strength. For this purpose, two-paremeter model based on Caprino's is developed and formulated by the ratio of indentation due to impact and normalized residual strength. The damage zone is considered only as an indentation. Impact tests are carried out on laminated composites by steel balls. Test material is carbon/epoxy laminate. The specimens are composed of $[{\pm}45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]_2$ and $[\pm}45^{\circ}]_4$ stacking sequence and have $0.75^T{\times}0.26^W{\times}100^L(mm) dimension. A proposed model shows a good correlation with the experimental results And failure mechanism due to high impact velocity is discussed on CFRP laminates to examine the initiation and development of damage by fractography and ultrasonic image ststem. The effect of the unidirectional ply position on the residual strength is considered here.

  • Since consists of regression equation by penetration depth prediction calculated by existing NDRC formula mainly considers properties of projectile, impact velocity, compressive strength as parameter, it is difficult to apply it to fire reinforced concrete. In this study, scabbing limit thickness was predict considering fiber reinforcement effect by local fracture of concrete was evaluated through high-velocity impact test. As a result of applying fracture reduction coefficient to NDRC, it was possible to predict scabbing limit thickness of fiber reinforced concrete similarly with actual measurement.

  • The non-destructive tests are widely used to predict the strength of existing structures. The purpose of the present study is to propose the prediction equations for strength evaluation of concrete structures. The present study focuses on the rebound method and ultrasonic pulse velocity method for quartzite aggregate concrete. The major test variables include the water-cement ratio and curing methods. The water-cement ratio are 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, respectively and the curing method covers ail-dry condition and standard curing condition. The prediction equations for strength of concrete are proposed from the present test data.
