Free surface liquid jet impingement, which is applicable to cooling of hot plates in a steel-making process, is investigated numerically by solving the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy in the liquid and gas phases. The free-surface of liquid-gas interface is tracked by an improved level-set method incorporating a sharp-interface technique for accurate imposition of stress and heat flux conditions on the liquid-gas interface. The level-set approach is combined with a non-equilibrium $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The computations are made for slit nozzle jets to investigate their flow and cooling characteristics. Also, the effects of jetting angle, velocity and moving velocity of plate on the interfacial motion and the associated flow and temperature fields are quantified.

The most important and difficult part in the problem of unsteady seepage is, how to analyze a position and variation of free water level. Therefore, this paper found the relation between the rising water level and infiltration in the embankment by analyzing established equations and extrapolated the empirical equations from experimental data (For the seepage velocity; $V_S=Ki=k\frac{H-d_1}{d}$, For the rising velocity level; $V_R=\frac{dH}{dt}$) With the aid of these data, the necessary equations were compared with the experimental analyses.
Jet impingement on a moving plate, which is applicable to cooling of hot metals in a steel-making process, is investigated numerically by solving the Navier-Stokes equations in the liquid and gas phases. The liquid-gas interface or free surface is tracked by a level-set method which is improved by incorporating the ghost fluid approach based on a sharp-interface representation. The computations are made for multiple jets as well as a single jet to compare their flow characteristics. Also, the effects of the nozzle pitch, moving velocity of plate and jet velocity on the interfacial motion and the associated flow and temperature fields.
The movement of water through a river embankment and its influenced upon the stability of the slope of the embankment are described. The stability of the embankment is depended upon the location of seepage line. As the seepage flow occurs in the embankment, the slope of the embankment loses its stability. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid change of water level. The variation of seepage line in the embankment model by a fluctuation of water level is discussed. The experimental models were construction with slopes of 1 : 1.5, 1 : 2.0, 1 : 2.5 and the flow velocity was turned from 60cm/sec~90cm/sec. Based on the experimental study, the following conclusions are drawn. 1) When water level is raised, the seepage line of downstream slope Is raised rapidly as flow velocity increases. 2) For the case of permeable layer, the seepage line raised rapidly as compare with impermeable layer when water lever is raised.
It is essential to accurately predict the change in water level, velocity, and flow rate for each passage of the grit chamber according to the operating conditions of the pump. In this study, VOF multiphase flow analysis was performed, and the flow characteristics of the grit chamber were predicted. As a result of simulations, the sedimentation phenomenon after the entrance of the grit chamber channel is expected to occur on the side walls. When 6 channels are used, the average speed of the channels is about 52% of the design standard, and when 4 channels are used, the value increases to 74% of the design standard. The average water level in the channels tends to decrease as the flow velocity increases, and the water level in the absorption well with a larger flow rate is maintained lower than that in the absorption well with a smaller flow rate.

A simultaneous measurement of the wall skin friction and near-wall streamwise velocity fluctuations is performed using hot film and hot wire anemometers to investigate the relation between them. Near-wall turbulence statistics measured with a hot-wire probe are in good agreement with previous results. Turbulence properties of the wall skin friction fluctuations measured with a hot film also show fairly good agreements with those measured by others except that rms level is lower in the present study. Long-time averaged space- time correlations show that the wall skin friction is highly correlated with a turbulence structure which is tilted from the wall in the streamwise direction. Tilting angles are obtained from the phase shifts between the wall skin-friction and streamwise velocity fluctuations. The convection velocity of the near-wall streamwise velocity obtained from the space-time correlation is in good agreement with that from the direct numerical simulation database.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an 8-week velocity-based training on the maximum vertical jump in elite sprinters. Method: Ten elite sprinters were participated in this study (age: 21 ± 0.97 yrs., height: 179 ± 3.54 cm, body mass: 72 ± 2.98 kg). An 8-week velocity-based power training was provided to all subjects for twice per week. Their maximum vertical jumps were measured before and after velocity-based training. A 3-dimensional motion analysis with 8 infrared cameras and 4 channels of EMG was performed in this study. A paired t-test was used for statistical verification. The significant level was set at α=.05. Results: There were no statistically significant differences were found between pre and post the training (p>.05). However, most variables included jump record, knee joint ROM, and muscle activation of rectus femoris showed increased pattern after the training. Conclusion: In this study, an 8-week velocity-based training did not showed the significant training effects. However, knee joint movement which is the key role of the vertical jump revealed positive kinematic and kinetic pattern after the training. From this founding, it is believed that velocity-based training seems positively affect the vertical jump which is the clear measurement of mechanical power of sprinter. In addition, to get more clear evidence of the training more training period would be needed.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate kinematic comparisons of Tsukahara vault in gymnastics between a top-level athlete and sublevel collegiate athletes in order to obtain information on key biomechanical points for successful Tsukahara vaults. Methods: An Olympic gold medalist (height, 160 cm; weight, 52 kg; age, 25 years) and five sublevel collegiate gymnasts (height, $168.2{\pm}3.4cm$; weight, $59.6{\pm}3.1kg$; age, $23.2{\pm}1.6years$) participated in this study. They repeatedly performed Tsukahara vaults including one somersault. Fourteen motion-capturing cameras were used to collect the trajectories of 26 body markers during Tsukahara vaults. Event time, displacement and velocity of the center of mass, joint angles, the distance between the two hands on the horse, and averaged horizontal and vertical impact forces were calculated and compared. Results: The top-level athlete showed a larger range of motion (ROM) of the hip and knee joints compared to sublevel collegiate athletes during board contact. During horse contact, the top-level athlete had a narrow distance between the two hands with extended elbows and shoulders in order to produce a strong blocking force from the horse with a shorter contact time. At the moment of horse take-off, reactive hip extension of the top-level athlete enhanced propulsive take-off velocity and hip posture during post-flight phase. Conclusion: Even though a high velocity of the center of mass is important, the posture and interactive action during horse contact is crucial to post-flight performance and the advanced performance of Tsukahara vaults.

Bora is a strong, usually dry temporally and spatially transient wind that is common at the eastern Adriatic Coast and many other dynamically similar regions around the world. One of the Bora main characteristics is its gustiness, when wind velocities can reach up to five times the mean velocity. Bora often creates significant problems to traffic, structures and human life in general. In this study, Bora velocity and near-ground turbulence are studied using the results of three-level high-frequency Bora field measurements carried out on a meteorological tower near the city of Split, Croatia. These measurements are analyzed for a period from April 2010 until June 2011. This rather long period allows for making quite robust and reliable conclusions. The focus is on mean Bora velocity, turbulence intensity, Reynolds shear stress and turbulence length scale profiles, as well as on Bora velocity power spectra and thermal stratification. The results are compared with commonly used empirical laws and recommendations provided in the ESDU 85020 wind engineering standard to question its applicability to Bora. The obtained results report some interesting findings. In particular, the empirical power- and logarithmic laws proved to fit mean Bora velocity profiles well. With decreasing Bora velocity there is an increase in the power-law exponent and aerodynamic surface roughness length, and simultaneously a decrease in friction velocity. This indicates an urban-like velocity profile for smaller wind velocities and a rural-like velocity profile for larger wind velocities. Bora proved to be near-neutral thermally stratified. Turbulence intensity and lateral component of turbulence length scales agree well with ESDU 85020 for this particular terrain type. Longitudinal and vertical turbulence length scales, Reynolds shear stress and velocity power spectra differ considerably from ESDU 85020. This may have significant implications on calculations of Bora wind loads on structures.

A level set based topological shape optimization method for nonlinear structure considering hyper-elastic problems is developed. To relieve significant convergence difficulty in topology optimization of nonlinear structure due to inaccurate tangent stiffness which comes from material penalization of whole domain, explicit boundary for exact tangent stiffness is used by taking advantage of level set function for arbitrary boundary shape. For given arbitrary boundary which is represented by level set function, a Delaunay triangulation scheme is used for current structure discretization instead of using implicit fixed grid. The required velocity field in the actual domain to update the level set equation is determined from the descent direction of Lagrangian derived from optimality conditions. The velocity field outside the actual domain is determined through a velocity extension scheme based on the method suggested by Adalsteinsson and Sethian(1999). The topological derivatives are incorporated into the level set based framework to enable to create holes whenever and wherever necessary during the optimization.
