Vehicular Ad hoc Networks are considered as special kind of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. VANETs are a new emerging recently developed, advanced technology that allows a wide set of applications related to providing more safety on roads, more convenience for passengers, self-driven vehicles, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) are networks that allow communication in the event of connection problems, such as delays, intermittent connections, high error rates, and so on. Moreover, these are used in areas that may not have end-to-end connectivity. The expansion from DTN to VANET resulted in Vehicle Delay Tolerant Networks (VDTN). In this approach, a vehicle stores and carries a message in its buffer, and when the opportunity arises, it forwards the message to another node. Carry-store-forward mechanisms, packets in VDTNs can be delivered to the destination without clear connection between the transmitter and the receiver. The primary goals of routing protocols in VDTNs is to maximize the probability of delivery ratio to the destination node, while minimizing the total end-to-end delay. DTNs are used in a variety of operating environments, including those that are subject to failures and interruptions, and those with high delay, such as vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs). This paper discusses DTN routing protocols belonging to unicast delay tolerant position based. The comparison was implemented using the NS2 simulator. Simulation of the three DTN routing protocols GeOpps, GeoSpray, and MaxProp is recorded, and the results are presented.
As the world's industrial development quickens, the highways and regional expressways have been expanding to serve the logistics and transportation needs of people. The burgeoning road construction has led to a growing interest in roadside installations. These must have reliable performance over long periods, reduced maintenance and high durability. Steel roadside barriers are prone to corrosion and other compromises to their functionality. Therefore, using high anti-corrosion steel material is now seen as a viable solution to this problem. Thus, the objective of this paper is to expand the scope of applications for high anti-corrosion steel material for roadside barriers. This paper assesses the impact safety such as structural performance, occupant protection performance and post-impact vehicular response performance by a simulation review on roadside barriers built with high strength anti-corrosion steel materials named as hot-dip zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy-coated steel. The simulation test results for the roadside barriers built with high strength anti-corrosion steels with reduced sectional thickness meet the safety evaluation criteria, hence the proposed roadside barrier made by high strength and high anti-corrosion hot-dip zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy-coated steel will be a good solution to serve safe impact performance as well as save maintenance cost.
Due to increasing demand for improving road safety and optimizing road traffic, Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANET) have been subject to extensive attentions from all aspects of commercial industry and academic community. Security and user privacy are fundamental issues for all possible promising applications in VANET. Most of the existing security proposals for secure VANET concentrate authentication with privacy preservation in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside infrastructure (V2I) communications and require huge storage and network capacity for management of revocation list. Motivated by the fact, we propose a new scheme with security and privacy preservation which combines V2V and V2I communication. With our proposed scheme, the communication and computational delay for authentication and overhead for management of revocation list can be significantly reduced due to mutual authentication between a vehicle and a Roadside Unit (RSU) requires only two messages, and the RSU issues the anonymous certificate for the vehicle on behalf of the Trust Authority (TA). We demonstrate that the proposed protocol cannot only guarantee the requirements of security and privacy but can also provide efficiency of authentication and management of revocation list.
In the V2X communications, each vehicle periodically broadcasts a message, called a beacon, so that its neighbor vehicles can accurately predict the near-future positions of the sending vehicle. In particular, the mobility-adaptive beacon broadcast (MAB2) scheme keeps the tracking error of a sending vehicle below a fixed threshold within a few consecutive beacon losses. In this paper, we present a random-early beacon broadcast (REB2) scheme that addresses the beacon aging problem of the MAB2 scheme. The simulation results show that, for a neighbor vehicle within 100 m distance, the tracking failure probability of REB2 scheme can be reduced to less than 1/10 of that of MAB2 scheme.

The reliability of broadcasting over vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) is one of the most critical factors for driving safety applications. There exists limitations to improve the reliability of broadcast transmissions in saturated VANETs where previous proposals in literature tackle the problem by heuristically adapting the size of the contention window (CW). This paper considers improving the reliability by proposing a new probability model based on the counting methods of permutations and combinations, which counts all the possible cases of broadcast failures in a single-hop broadcast transmission for a given CW. From the model, we calculate the best CW size given the number of contention nodes, which significantly improves the reliability and satisfying the timely dissemination of emergency broadcasting messages. Through extensive VANET simulations with varying densities, we show that our model maintains near 100 percent success rate for single-hop broadcast as well as multi-hop broadcast (e.g. 40 hops) and achieves minimal broadcast delay.
In this paper, we propose a design method and process for hardware and software of hybrid V2X communication module that supports both C-ITS communication protocol designed for vehicle environment and Legacy LTE communication technology. C-ITS is suitable for safety service applications due to its low latency characteristics, and Legacy LTE is a technology suitable for non-safety applications such as traffic information and infotainment due to high latency and high capacity. The hybrid V2X communication module supports multiple communication technologies of WAVE and LTE, in which WAVE supports multiple channels, so that it is designed to transmit road information such as LDM and positioning correction information to an autonomous vehicle in real time. The main design results presented in this paper will be applied to the implementation of future hybrid V2X communication terminals for vehicles.

In this paper, we propose an authentication scheme for EVPT (Emergency Vehicle Priority Transit) service in Vehiclar Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) enable a variety of vehicle comfort services, traffic management applications, and infotainment services. These are the basis for a new generation of preventive and active safety functions. By intelligently controlling signalling at intersections, providing additional information to the driver and warning the driver in critical situations. we therefore focus on vehicle-to-infrastructure communication for the authentication between emergency vehicles and traffic lights system. This authentication process should identify the vehicle, and provide privacy protection.

Li-ion battery system is regarded as one of the most potent power sources for electrified power-trains. For the Li-ion battery system to be widely adopted in automotive applications, the performance, safety, and cycle life issues need to be properly addressed. These issues are closely related to the thermal management of battery system. Especially, the effective cooling module design is the core part for the novel battery thermal management system development. In this paper, an experimental approach was carried out as a basic part of comprehensive battery thermal management research. The main goal of this paper is to present a comparison of two cooling systems (air cooling and phase change material (PCM) based cooling) of the unit 18650 battery module. The temperature rise with different battery discharge rate (c-rate) was mainly investigated and analyzed for two types of battery cooling systems. It is expected that this study can properly contribute to providing basic insights into the design of robust battery thermal management system for vehicular applications.
The development of applications for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) has very specific and clear goals such as providing intellectual safe transport systems. An emergency warning technic for public safety is one of the applications which requires an intelligent broadcast mechanism to transmit warning messages quickly and efficiently against the time restriction. The broadcast storm problem causing several packet collisions and extra delay has to be considered to design a broadcast protocol for VANETs, when multiple nodes attempt transmission simultaneously at the access control layer. In this paper, we propose an early intelligent alert broadcasting (EI-CAST) algorithm to resolve effectively the broadcast storm problem and meet time-critical requirement. The proposed algorithm uses not only the early alert technic on the basis of time to collision (TTC) but also the intelligent broadcasting technic on the basis of fuzzy logic, and the performance of the proposed algorithm was compared and evaluated through simulation with the existing broadcasting algorithms. It was demonstrated that the proposed algorithm shows a vehicle can receive the alert message before a collision and have no packet collision when the distance of alert region is less than 4 km.

Lane change is an important issue in microscopic traffic flow simulations and active safety. Overtaking and changing lanes are dangerous driving maneuvers. This approach presents a lane-changing system based on speed and a minimum gap between vehicles in a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET). This paper proposes a solution to ensure the safety of drivers while changing lanes on highways. Efficient routing protocols could play a crucial role in VANET applications, safeguarding both drivers and passengers, and thus, maintaining a safe on-road environment. This paper focuses on the development of an intelligent transportation system that provides timely, reliable information to drivers and the concerned authorities. A test bed is created for the techniques used in the proposed system, where analysis takes place in an on-board embedded system designed for vehicle navigation. The designed system was tested on a four-lane road in Neemrana, India. Successful simulations were conducted with real-time network parameters to maximize quality of service and performance using Simulation of Urban Mobility and Network Simulator 2 (NS-2). The system implementation, together with the findings, is presented in this paper. Illustrating the approach are results from simulation using NS-2.
