The relationship between vehicle driving pattern and fuel consumption in urban area was studied in Seoul along three representative routes using a test car equipped with all the instruments required for recording modes of traffic and measuring fuel consumption. Correlation with idle speed, fuel consumption and CO concentration of car in use was also measured. The average vehicle speed in Seoul was 31.4 km/h and the time spent in different modes was 23.0% in idle mode, 22.5% in acceleration mode, 32.4% in cruising mode and 22.3% in deceleration mode, respectively. Hence, traffic flow was suggested to be relatively smooth. Fuel consumption per unit distance, .phi. was closely related with trip time spent per unit distance, t, and correlation coefficient obtained from the test car was 0.925, and the relationship between .phi. and t was also obtained from the linear regression with the following equation. .phi.=42.87+0.38 t. Idle speed of vehicle in use was mostly adjusted low and cars which were over the permissible standard of CO concentration (4.5%) were 50% or more. As the idle speed decreased, the fuel consumption was decreased, while the CO concentration was increased. Therefore, the decrease of fuel consumption can not be expected with only a decrease in idle speed.

The fatality of pedestrian accounts for about 21.2% of all fatality at 2007 year in Korea. In car to pedestrian accident it is very important to inspect the throw distance of pedestrian after collision for exact reconstructing of the accident. The variables that influence on the throw distance of pedestrian can be classified into the factors of vehicle and pedestrian, and road condition. It was simulated by PC-CRASH, a kinetic analysis program for a traffic accident in sedan type vehicle and SPSS program was used for regression analysis. From the results, the throw distance of pedestrian increased with the increasing of vehicle velocity, and decreased with the increasing of impact offset. Also it decreased with the increasing of velocity of pedestrian at accident, and throw distance at the road condition of wet was longer than that at dry condition. Finally, the regression model of sedan type vehicle on the throw distance of pedestrian was as follows; $$dist_i=2.39-0.11offset_i+0.59speed_i-545height_i-0.25walk_i+2.78wet_i+{\epsilon}_i$$.
Although most electricity production contributes to air pollution, the vehicle organizations and environmental agency categorizes all EVs as zero-emission vehicles because they produce no direct exhaust or emissions. Currently available EVs have a shorter range per charge than most conventional vehicles have per tank of gas. EVs manufacturers typically target a range of 160 km over on a fully charged battery. The energy efficiency and driving range of EVs varies substantially based on driving conditions and driving habits. Extreme outside temperatures tend to reduce range, because more energy must be used to heat or cool the cabin. High driving speeds reduce range because of the energy required to overcome increased drag. Compared with gradual acceleration, rapid acceleration reduces range. Additional devices significant inclines also reduces range. Based on these driving modes and climate conditions, this paper discusses the performance characteristics of EVs on energy efficiency and driving range. Test vehicles were divided by low / high-speed EVs. The difference of test vehicles are on the vehicle speed and size. Low-speed EVs is a denomination for battery EVs that are legally limited to roads with posted speed limits as high as 72 km/h depending on the particular laws, usually are built to have a top speed of 60 km/h, and have a maximum loaded weight of 1,400 kg. Each vehicle test was performed according to the driving modes and test temperature ($-25^{\circ}C{\sim}35^{\circ}C$). It has a great influence on fuel efficiency amd driving distance according to test temperature conditions.
This paper describes a vehicle driving-load estimation method for application to vehicle Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC). Vehicle driving-load consists of aerodynamic force, rolling resistance, and gravitational force due to road slope and is unknown disturbance in a vehicle dynamic model. The vehicle driving-load has been estimated from engine and wheel speed measurements using a vehicle dynamic model a least square method. The estimated driving-load has been used in the adaptation of throttle/brake control law. The performance of the control law has been investigated via both simulation and vehicle tests. The simulation and test results show that the proposed control law can provide satisfactory vehicle-to-vehicle distance control performance for various driving situations.
Aerodynamic design of a vehicle has very important meaning on the fuel economy, dynamic stability and the noise & vibration of a moving vehicle. In this study, the correlation of aerodynamic effect between two model vehicles moving inline on a road was studied with the basic SAE model vehicle. Drag and lift are two main physical forces acting on the vehicle and both of them directly effect on the fuel economy and driving stability of the vehicle. For the research, the distance between two vehicles is varied from 5m to 30m at the fixed vehicle speed, 100km/h and the side-wind was assumed to be zero. The main issue for this numerical research is on the understanding of the interaction forces; lift and drag between two vehicles formed inline. From the study, it was found that as the distance between two vehicles is closer, the drag force acting on both the front and rear vehicle decreases and the lift force has same trend for both vehicle. As the distance(D) is 5m, the drag of the front vehicle reduced 7.4% but 28.5% for the rear-side vehicle. As the distance is 30m, the drag of the rear vehicle is still reduced to 22% compared to the single driving.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the secondary tasks such as sending text message(STM) and searching navigation(SN) on vehicle speed and distance during driving and brake response time during unexpected situation using a driving simulator. The participants included 19 college students; 9 males aged $25.2{\pm}1.0$ with $2.4{\pm}2.0years$ of driving experiences and 10 females aged $21.4{\pm}0.5$ with $1.3{\pm}0.5years$ of driving experiences. All subjects were instructed to keep a certain distance(30m) from the car ahead and a constant speed(100km/h). Average speed and average following distance were measured during 10 seconds before unexpected situation. Also, brake response time after unexpected situation was measured. Average speed was more decreased and average following distance was more increased during the driving with secondary tasks than driving only. Male maintained the assigned speed and distance better than female. The brake response time was faster during driving only than the driving with secondary tasks. And the brake response time of male was shorter than that of female.
The fatalities of pedestrian account for about 21.2% of all fatalities at 2007 year in Korea. To reconstruct exactly the accident, it is important to calculate the throw distance of pedestrian in car to pedestrian accident. The frontal shape of SUV vehicle is dissimilar to passenger car and bus, so the trajectory and throw distance of pedestrian by SUV vehicle is not the same of passenger car and bus. The influencing on it can be classified into the factors of vehicle and pedestrian, and road factor. It was analyzed by PC-CRASH for simulation, and SPSS s/w was used for regression analysis. From the simulation results, the maximum impact energy of multi-body of pedestrian was occurred to that of torso body at the same time. And the throw distance increased with the increasing of impact velocity, and decreased with the increasing of impact offset. Also it decreased with the increasing of velocity of pedestrian at accident, and the throw distance of wet road was longer than that of dry road. Finally, the regression analysis model of SUV(Nissan Pathfinder type)vehicle in car to pedestrian accident was as follows; $$disti_i=-0.87-0.11offseti_i+0.69speed_i-4.27height_i+0.004walk_i+0.63wet_i+{\epsilon}_i$$.

A large number of people suffered from traffic accidents each year, so people pay more attention to traffic safety. However, the traditional methods use laser sensors to calculate the vehicle distance at a very high cost. In this paper, we propose a method based on deep learning to calculate the vehicle distance with a monocular camera. Our method is inexpensive and quite convenient to deploy on the mobile platforms. This paper makes two contributions. First, based on Light-Head RCNN, we propose a new vehicle detection framework called Light-Car Detection which can be used on the mobile platforms. Second, the planar homography of projective geometry is used to calculate the distance between the camera and the vehicles ahead. The results show that our detection system achieves 13FPS detection speed and 60.0% mAP on the Adreno 530 GPU of Samsung Galaxy S7, while only requires 7.1MB of storage space. Compared with the methods existed, the proposed method achieves a better performance.

With the active development of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), the application of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) has been expanded. As wide driving region of IPMSM for electric vehicle (EV) traction motor is required, many studies are conducted to improve characteristics of a motor in both low and high-speed driving regions. A motor in high-speed driving region generates (produces) large stress to the rotor. Thus, the rotor needs to be designed considering the mechanical safety. Therefore, in this paper, we conducted stress analysis and electromagnetic analysis to determine the centerpost's distance which is considered important during the design of IPMSM for EV traction motor in order to secure mechanical safety and satisfy specifications of output requirement.

A throttle/brake control law for the intelligent cruise control(ICC) systems has been proposed in this paper. The ICC system consists of a vehicle detection sensor, the control algorithm and a throttle/brake actuators. The control performance has been investigated through vehicle tests. The test vehicle is equipped with a MMW radar sensor, a solenoid-valve-controlled Electronic-Vacuum-Booster(EVB) and a step-motor controlled throttle actuator. The results indicate the proposed throttle/brake control laws can provide satisfactory vehicle-to-vehicle distance and velocity control performance.
