This study is about the design and analysis ot a suspension damper for truck driver's seat to improve the ride comfort. Trucks are usually subjected to hostile driving environments. Therefore, many truck driver's seat have suspension seats to isolate the vibration from the cab floor panel. Because the vehicle suspension system can reduce the primary vibration from the ground, only low frequency vibration can be transmitted to the driver's seat. But, this low frequency vibration can be harmful to the driver. The seat damper is very critical element to improve the ride comfort for the driver. In this study, a four-stage damper is designed and analyzed for the vibration capability. The damping coefficient of this damper can lie manually controlled in response to the road and driving environment.

This paper presents a stereo vision based autonomous inspection system for welding quality control of a RV(Recreational Vehicle) sinking seat. The three dimensional geometry of the welding bead, which is the welding quality criteria, is measured by using the captured stereo images with a median filter applied on it. The image processing software for the system was developed using the NI LabVTEW software with NI vision system. In the manufacturing process of a RV sinking seat, the developed system can be used for overcoming the precision error that arises from a visible inspection by an operator. The welding quality inspection system for RV sinking seat was verified using experimentation.

This paper presents control performances of a seat suspension system equipped with magnetorheological (MR) dampers using a new adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller (FSMC). Adaptive fuzzy controller is formulated by considering the acceleration of the seat. It has been demonstrated that the proposed seat suspension system realized by the adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller can provide effective performances such as reduced vibration.

This paper compares seat vibrations of a small passenger car and a SUV. The results also include the comparison of the human body accelerations and the ride values, such as the component ride values, and SEAT values of 12 axis accelerations obtained at the human body and seat track. The ride comfort evaluation is usually carried out by experiments of real cars which are expensive and sometimes may contain errors by passenger's postures. Simulations by computer, on the other hand, enable to solve these problems when the accuracy is proven. This paper, thus, also shows the correlation of human body vibration between experiments and computer simulations. For the computer simulation, korean dummy models are developed from the Hybrid III models by scaling the body data of Hybrid III to those of Korean men and women. From the comparison between the test data and simulation data, a nice correlation in trends was shown.

A driver interacts directly with the car seat at all times. There are ergonomic characteristics that have to be followed to produce comfortable seats. However, most of previous researches focused on either static or dynamic condition only. In addition, research on car seat development is critically lacking although Malaysia herself manufactures its own car. Hence, this paper integrates objective measurements and subjective evaluation to predict seat discomfort. The objective measurements consider both static and dynamic conditions. Steven's psychophysics power law has been used in which after expansion; ${\psi}\;=\;a+b{\varphi}_s^{\alpha}+c{\varphi}_v^{\beta}$ where ${\psi}$ is discomfort sensation, ${\varphi}_s^{\alpha}$ is static modality with exponent ${\alpha}$ and ${\varphi}_v^{\beta}$ is dynamic modality with exponent ${\beta}$. The subjects in this study were local and the cars used were Malaysian made compact car. Static objective measurement was the seat pressure distribution measurement. The experiment was carried out on the driver's seat in a real car with the engine turned off. Meanwhile, the dynamic objective measurement was carried out in a moving car on real roads. During pressure distribution and vibration transmissibility experiments, subjects were requested to evaluate their discomfort levels using vehicle seat discomfort survey questionnaire together with body map diagram. From subjective evaluations, seat pressure and vibration dose values exponent for static modality ${\alpha}$ = 1.51 and exponent for dynamic modality ${\beta}$ = 1.24 were produced. The curves produced from the $E_{q.s}$ showed better $R_{-sq}$ values (99%) when both static and dynamic modalities were considered together as compared to Eq. with single modality only (static or dynamic only R-Sq = 95%). In conclusion, car seat discomfort prediction gives better result when seat development considered both static and dynamic modalities; and using ergonomic approach.
A mathematical model is developed in this paper to define the interaction between the occupant and vehicle passenger compartment and to predict the occupant dynamic response during a sudden impulse load. Two different types of occupants are considered in this study, child and adult occupants. The occupants are considered as lumped masses connected to the child seat and vehicle's body masses by means of restraint systems. In addition, the occupant restraint characteristics of seat belt and airbag are represented by stiffness and damping elements. To obtain the dynamic response of the occupant, the equations of motion of the occupants during vehicle collisions are developed and analytically solved. The occupant's acceleration and relative displacement are used as injury criteria to interpret the results. It is demonstrated from the numerical simulations that the dynamic response and injury criteria are easily captured and analyzed. It is also shown that the mathematical models are flexible, useful in optimization studies and it can be used at initial design stage.
Neck injuries sustained during low speed rear impact are the most commonly sustained traffic injury. Therefore, the analysis of neck injury mechanisms and methods for mitigating and reducing neck injuries during low speed rear impact are a very important issue in the vehicle safety field. In order to find a method to absorb the shock that is transmitted to the occupant, the response of frontal and rear dummy due to the motion of the struck vehicle and the rotational angular displacements of dummies' necks during rear impact at 12km/h speed were investigated using a Working Model 2D. The results suggest that the shock absorption system should be equipped in the bottom of the seat of the vehicle to reduce shock and mitigate neck injury to the occupants.

Commercial drivers feel tired more than the general public, because their driving times are long and they experience more idle vibration. In this study, we developed a nonlinear model of a magnetic, linear spring seat suspension to determine the optimal design to improve ride comfort. The resonant frequency for the optimal design of the suspension was found to be 3.5 Hz, and the stiffness was analyzed through displacement-load experiments. Additionally, the vibration transmissibility was analyzed by the suspension stiffness, and the existing coil spring type vibration transmissibility was found to be 0.99. A parallelogram type magnetic spring was determined to result in a better performance than the existing spring with a vibration transmissibility of 0.823.

Commercial vehicle drivers typically feel more fatigued compared to general-public drivers. because they spend longer periods of time driving and experience more rough road conditions. This study showed that the application of a magnet, a linear spring, and a seat suspension with nonlinear characteristics was the optimal design to increase comfort while driving. The resonant frequency for the optimal design suspension was 2.8 Hz, and the stiffness was analyzed through displacement-load experiments. Vibration transmissibility was analyzed by suspension stiffness and the existing dynamic compression. The magnetic spring type was at 0.875. As a result, the X-type magnetic spring performed better than the existing spring at 0.729.
Existing child car seats do not have a monitoring means for the driver or guardian to effectively recognize the status of whether the seat belt of car seat is fastened and whether the ISOFIX of the car seat is fastened to the inside device of the vehicle. In this paper, we propose a smart car seat system which can monitor in real time, whether the seat belt of a child seated in the car seat is fastened and whether the ISOFIX of the car seat is fastened. The proposed system has been developed with a prototype, in which a Hall sensor, magnet, Bluetooth, and display device are used to detect whether these are fastened and to display the detection results. The prototype system provides the detection results as texts and alarm signal to the display for driver or guardian' smartphone in the car in motion. With functional tests of the prototype system, it was confirmed that the detection functions are properly operated, and the detection results were transmitted to the display device and smartphone via Bluetooth within 0.5 seconds. It is expected that the development system can effectively prevent safety accidents of child car seats.
