Most pedestrian-vehicle crashes involve frontal impacts, and the vehicle front structures are responsible for most pedestrian injuries. The vehicle bumper contacts the lower legs at first. The leading edge of the hood (bonnet) strikes the proximal upper leg and finally, the head and upper torso hit the top surface of the hood or windscreen. In essence, the pedestrian wraps around the front of the vehicle until pedestrian and vehicle are traveling at the same speed. Since the hood surface is made from sheet metal, it is a relatively compliant structure and does not pose a major risk for severe head trauma. However, serious head injury can occur when the head hits a region of the hood with stiff underlying structures such as engine components. The solution is to provide sufficient clearance between the hood and underlying structures for controlled deceleration of a pedestrian's head. However, considerations of aerodynamic design and styling can make it extremely difficult to alter a vehicle's front end geometry to provide more under-hood space. In this study, the safe hood will be developed by designing new conceptual inner panel in order to decrease the pedestrian's head injuries without changing hood outer geometry.
This paper presents the experimental result and theoretical analysis result to investigate the correlation between the operating force, angle and locking torque for vehicle hood frame. Also, we derived the experimental equation that using the results for experiment and theory. The hood frame is switching-devices used for opening and closing the vehicle hood. It needs the correlation data between locking torques of each joint, operating force and angle of hood frame. The correlation data for torque and reaction force of hood frame obtained through experiment and theory analysis. Finally, the experimental equation of the locking torque prediction for the hood frame is derived.

This paper presents the experimental result and theoretical analysis result to investigate the correlation between the operating force and locking torque for vehicle hood frame. Also, we derived the experimental equations that using the results of experiment and theory. The hood frame is switching-devices used for opening and closing the vehicle hood. It needs the correlation data between locking torques of each joint and operating force of hood frame because the parameters affects the emotional quality of the vehicle. The correlation data for torque and force of hood frame obtained through experiment and theory analysis. Finally, two experimental equations of correlation are derived. Thus, the developed equations show that has high usefulness for the basic design of hood frame of vehicle.

Topology optimization of the inner reinforcement for a vehicle's hood has been performed by evolutionary structural optimization(ESO) using a smoothing scheme. The purpose of this study is to obtain optimal topology of the inner reinforcement for a vehicle's hood considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion simultaneously. To do this, the multiobjective optimization technique was implemented. Optimal topologies were obtained by the ESO method. From several combinations of weighting factors, a Pareto-optimal solution was obtained. Also, a smoothing scheme was implemented to suppress the checkerboard pattern in the procedure of topology optimization. It is concluded that ESO method with a smoothing scheme is effectively applied to topology optimization of the inner reinforcement of a vehicle's hood considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion.

The purpose of this study is to predict the dynamic behavior of clamshell hood system on the harsh road driving condition, and secure the safety and durability performance of the system. The equation of motion of hood system is derived and the numerical analysis is implemented to obtain the lateral movement of the hood system. Also, the actual Belgian road test results are correlated to the predicted ones, and confirm the reliability of the system. Then, the parameter study is conducted to figure out the sensitive factors to affect the dynamic behavior, and the engineering design guide to make the system robust to confine the minimum friction force generated from hood latch and maximum hood weight is suggested from this research.

Reliability-based topology optimization (RBTO) is to get an optimal topology satisfying uncertainties of design variables. In this study, reliability-based topology optimization method is applied to the inner reinforcement of vehicle's hood based on BESO. A multi-objective topology optimization technique was implemented to obtain optimal topology of the inner reinforcement of the hood. considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion as well as natural frequency. Performance measure approach (PMA), which has probabilistic constraints that are formulated in terms of the reliability index, is adopted to evaluate the probabilistic constraints. To evaluate the obtained optimal topology by RBTO, it is compared with that of DTO of the inner reinforcement of the hood. It is found that the more suitable topology is obtained through RBTO than DTO even though the final volume of RBTO is a little bit larger than that of DTO. From the result, multiobjective optimization technique based on the BESO can be applied very effectively in topology optimization for vehicle's hood reinforcement considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion as well as natural frequency.
This study is on pedestrian protection device using pneumatic cylinder and simple link mechanism when vehicle collide with pedestrian. This study ensured the safety space between engine and hood after it applies to simple link mechanism and pneumatic cylinder. It can absorb the damage which measure the specific device if vehicle collide with pedestrian. Combination of simple link mechanism and pneumatic cylinder was more superior than the present pedestrian protection device. Simple link mechanism could confirm superior height and survival probability than when only cylinder operated. It also ensured enough space between engine and hood. And if a cylinder is not working because of old cylinder, poor repair or damage of accident vertical cylinder would be difficult to execute because there exists the irregular space between engine and hood. If simple link mechanism operates with only one cylinder it could ensure the regular space because simple link mechanism set up at the middle of hood. So this device could confirm high safety for pedestrian.

To achieve the weight reduction of a vehicle, Magnesium alloys are widely used in automobile parts because of its lightweight characteristics. Magnesium alloys also have advantages in recycling, stiffness, NVH , heat protection. But Magnesium alloy parts are mainly manufactured by diecasting processes, their productivity was not so high compared to by sheet metal working. We are developing vehicle hood using magnesium sheets. In this study we designed magnesium alloy hood which have equivalent mechanical characteristics to steel hood. Using finite element method we decided thickness of magnesium sheets under some design requirements and we changed the shape of hood inner panel and hinge reinforcements. Outer and inner panel thickness was 1.3mm, 1.5mm respectively. Panel dentibility analysis was performed to conform the new magnesium design by nonlinear FEM package. Formability and hemming of Magnesium sheets are the subjects for further study because they have poor stretchability compared to steel sheets.

Pedestrian to vehicle traffic accidents show a very high mortality rate compared to the frequency of occurrence. In order to improve the pedestrian protection performance of the vehicle, the korean government added a "pedestrian safety" entry from the year 2007. The performance for pedestrian protection of current vehicles gradually improved compared to the past, but it is still insufficient. It was found that the pedestrian protection performance was very weak, such as the top of the bonnet, the A-pillar and under the front windshield. A application of an active hood and pedestrian protection airbags can be countermeasures for these weak points of pedestrian safety. The active hood and pedestrian protection airbags are designed and manufactured to apply to the top of the hood and to the bottom of the windshield. The manufactured system is equipped in a test vehicle and evaluated based on the Korea New Car Assessment Program(KNCAP) test procedures for the performance of pedestrian safety. As a result, the outstanding effect of pedestrian protection has been achieved by the active hood and the pedestrian protection airbag. The rates of pedestrian injury are reduced by 82.2% and 95.4%, respectively.
A multi-objective optimization technique was implemented to obtain optimal topologies of the inner reinforcement for a vehicle's hood simultaneously considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion and natural frequency. In addition, a smoothing scheme was used to suppress the checkerboard patterns in the ESO method. Two models with different curvature were chosen in order to investigate the effect of curvature on the static stiffness and natural frequency of the inner reinforcement. A scale factor was employed to properly reflect the effect of each objective function. From several combinations of weighting factors, a Pareto-optimal topology solution was obtained. As the weighting factor for the elastic strain efficiency went from 1 to 0, the optimal topologies transmitted from the optimal topology of a static stiffness problem to that of a natural frequency problem. It was also found that the higher curvature model had a larger static stiffness and natural frequency than the lower curvature model. From the results, it is concluded that the ESO method with a smoothing scheme was effectively applied to topology optimization of the inner reinforcement of a vehicle's hood.
