  • As the price of traditional fuels soar, the alternatives are becoming more viable. And manufacturers are promoting the growing viability of electric and biofuel-powered vehicles through longer warranties. Now, these longer green environment (emission)warranties, sometimes called extended warranties or "super warranties," have been adapted. The main result of this paper is to present a new method to approximate a bivariate warranty function by using Radial Basis Function Network with application of Radon Transform and its inverse which is used to reduce the dimension of the warranty space. This method consist of the following stages: First, by using the Radon Transform, the bivariate warranty function can be reduced to one dimensional function. Second, each of the one dimensional functions is approximated by using neural network technique into neural sub-networks. Third, these neural sub-networks are combined together to form the final approximation neural network. Four, by using the inverse of radon transform to this final approximation neural network we get the approximation to the given function. Also, we apply the above method to some green warranty data of automotive vehicle company.

  • Although a scooter is a convenient transportation means for a short distance traveling with a light package in the congested urban center, it might be one of the significant sources of air pollutants to which many people can easily be exposed during its passing-by. In this paper, we measured concentrations of gases and particles emitted from a scooter at roadside with no other traffic. To understand the characteristics of scooter emissions with respect to driving speed (idling, 30 km/h) at the roadside, total particle number concentration, particle size distribution, average surface area of particles deposited in the alveolar region, and concentrations of black carbon, CO, and $NO_x$ were measured. The concentrations of the particle number, surface area of deposited particles, CO, and $NO_x$ were highly fluctuated in the scooter's idling condition. The trends of particle number concentration, CO, and $NO_x$ generation were similar to one another. When the scooter started to move, all of $NO_x$, CO and particle number concentrations increased and after it passed by at the speed of 30 km/h, the concentration peaks of the particles and gases appeared at the same time. Unimodal size distribution with ~70 and ~93 nm mode diameters was observed for the idling and cruising condition, respectively. From this work, we found that emission from a passing vehicle could be characterized using a roadside monitoring technique.

  • The US Pavement Design method (AASHTO) and HDM-4, a road pavement maintenance decision system, are not suitable for domestic pavement design, construction and maintenance. KPRP(Korea Pavement Research Program) has been developed to reflect Korea's environmental conditions and vehicle characteristics, thereby, extending pavement life. The main objective of this study is to select the best alternative through Life Cycle Cost $CO_2$ (LCCC) calculations among three representative maintenance strategies using KPRP design software since the environment cost resulting from the extended pavement life will also differ. The analysis of this study illustrates that cumulative carbon emissions for 40 years in alternative 2 (Cutting and Overlaying at Year 30) is the lowest option among them, and the basic cost of $CO_2$ emission by various road maintenance and repair work can be used for suggesting an optimal maintenance strategy for highway agency.

  • A HEV evaluation program, funded by ADEME, was carried out by a group of Laboratories of different specialties in order to evaluate and compare consumption, emission and component technologies of the three first HEVs put on the market (Toyota Prius, Nissan Tino and Honda Insight). This paper presents the results obtained until now. These results show good consumption and emission performance of the tested vehicles compared to conventional ones. The energy management seems to be globally the same for the three vehicles excepting for cold stans where the Insight allows a very earlier stop of the engine compared to the Tino and especially to the Prius. A mapping of the engine consumption of the Prius and the Insight was performed in order to furnish data for the simulation models. The Permanent Magnet motors of the Prius and Tino have different number of pair poles and then different emf at a given speed. The low emf values of the Prius allow operation at high speed with less field weakening control than for the Tino. The inverters of the Prius and the Tino, controlled by a PWM at respectively 5 kHz and 7 kHz switching frequency, are made of IGBTs with high commutation performances.

  • Emissoin of heavy duty vehicle have much positioned in air pollution although its limited number of vehicles. CNG vehicles are coming to the fore as one of the solution of diesel vehicles. CNG vehicles exhaust smaller emission than diesel vehicles on PM and NOx. In this study, aftertreatment technologies are introduced on vehicles which use CNG and hydrogenmixed fuel. Withmixing hydrogen with CNG, combustion efficiency is enhanced, and harmful emission might be decreased, but methane that is main component of CNG brings green house effect. In order to remove methane and NOx in exhaust gas of CNG engine, methane oxidation catalyst and SCR technologies were respectively analyzed.

  • This study is aimed to investigate the US code and European code on the evaluation of fuel economy of natural gas vehicles and deduce the formula suitable for domestic natural gas fuel. The fuel consumption formula have been derived by carbon balance relation between fuel composition and exhaust emission. The US code does not limit the composition of the test gas, but European code should be used the reference gases such as G20 and G23. In the case of NGV using domestic city gas, it is confirmed that the fuel economy determined by European code is 12% worse than that of US code because of difference of test gas. Also, a method of determining the fuel properties from the calorific value is proposed to evaluate the fuel economy of natural gas vehicles.

  • Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanorods arrays were deposited on ZnO buffered p-Si(100) substrates by hydrothermal method. The ZnO buffer layer with a thickness of 30 nm was deposited by metal oxide chemical vapor deposition at $500^{\circ}C$. The structural and optical properties of ZnO nanorods arrays controlled by precursor concentrations from 0.06 to 0.5 M were studied by FE-SEM(field emission scanning electron microscopy), XRD(X-ray diffraction), and PL(photoluminescence), respectively. It was found that the structural and optical properties of ZnO nanorods arrays are changed significantly with increase of precursor concentration. The sizes of diameter and length of nanorods were increased as the concentration increase, and good optical property was shown with the concentration of 0.3 M.

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics of Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) emission from painting and printing facilities in the Pyeongdong industrial complex in Gwangju. In addition, the objective was to understand the distribution characteristics of VOCs in the ambient air in industrial complexes affected by painting and printing facilities. The painting facility mainly emitted toluene, acetone, butyl acetate, 4-methyl-2-pentanone, ethyl acetate, 1-butanol, methyl ethyl ketone, m,p-xylene, o-xylene, 4-ethyltoluene, ethylbenzene, 3-ethyltoluene, and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene. The main emission components in printing facilities were methyl ketone, ethyl acetate, acetone, 2-propanol, toluene, heptane, and butyl acetate. Ethyl acetate, toluene, 2-butanone, acetone, butyl acetate, 2-propanol, xylenes, and 4-methyl-2-pentanone were detected in the ambient air of the Pyeongdong industrial complex, consistent with the VOCs emitted by painting and printing facilities. The average concentration of seasonal TVOCs followed an order of winter > fall > spring > summer, whereas the concentrations of daytime and nighttime TVOCs were generally higher at night than those during the day, and the wind speed was greater during the day than it was at night. Based on a factor analysis of VOCs in the ambient air of Pyeongdong industrial complex, it is considered that organic solvents used in coating, printing, and electronics manufacturing facilities, as well as diesel vehicle emissions played a major role.

  • This study investigates the impact of increased adoption of eco-friendly vehicles on ozone (O3) concentrations in South Korea, utilizing the community multiscale air quality (CMAQ) model. In the summer of 2017 (June-August), we conducted two experiments: a BASE experiment, representing baseline emissions, and an R_30 experiment, involving a 30% emission reduction due to eco-friendly vehicles. The contrast between these experiments reveals that, while most air pollutants decreased with reduced vehicle emissions, O3 concentrations surprisingly increased (up to 2.1 parts per billion) across South Korea. A further examination of O3 concentration changes was conducted by analyzing daytime and nighttime variations as well as wind direction. During the daytime, O3 concentrations notably rose near metropolitan areas due to reduced O3 titration (O3 + NO → O2 + NO2) resulting from emission reductions. At nighttime, O3 concentrations exhibited a greater increase, attributed to the transport of daytime-generated O3 to rural regions. Notably, the impact of reduced emissions in metropolitan areas on O3 concentrations in downwind areas varied depending on the prevailing wind direction. These findings highlight that the promotion of eco-friendly vehicles, though effective in lowering certain air pollutants, might not directly influence O3 concentrations. This study underscores the need to comprehensively understand the complicated chemistry of O3 to develop effective strategies for air quality management.
