  • Size class structure and vegetative growth of a perennial herb of the temperate deciduous forests, Symplocarpus renifolius Schott, were studied from 1991 to 1994 in Namhansansung, Kyonggi Province, Korea. The size class structures of leaf number and leaf area per individual followed bell-shape curve, i.e. frequency of middle class was relatively high. The leaf area increased from the late-March to mid-May. At the end of the growing season, leaf area(length X breadth) was proportional to biomass, especially aboveground biomass. The leaf number and leaf area per individual increased at the rate of 0.08 leaf/year and 9.7 $cm^2/year$, respectively. The size of the individuals in large-sized classes, in leaf number and leaf area, decreased in next year, while the size of the individuals in small-sized classes increased. Therefore, it was concluded that the size class structure of S. renifolius population was largely determined by the growth form.

크림손클로버, 헤어리베치, 호밀 추출물이 몇 가지 작물의 종자 발아와 유근 생장에 미치는 allelopathy 효과 (Allelopathic Effects of Crimson Clover, Hariy Vetch and Rye on Germination and Radicle Elongation of Several Crops)

  • 피복작물의 생육 단계에 따른 allelopathy 효과의 차이를 알아보기 위해, 각 피복작물의 영양생장기, 개화기, 결실기에 채취한 시료로 부터 추출한 추출물을 이용해 콩, 무, 유채, 상추의 발아에 미치는 영향을 확인하였다. 콩과 무에서는 각 피복작물 추출물의 처리구에서 발아율에 별다른 차이를 나타내지 않았으나, 유채에서는 크림손클로버의 개화기 20% 추출물, 헤어리베치의 영양생장기, 개화기, 결실기 20% 추출물, 호밀의 영양생장기 20% 추출물들에서 20% 이상의 발아 억제가 나타났으며, 상추는 영양생장기의 크림손클로버와 헤어리베치의 20% 추출물 처리에서 발아세가 낮게 나타났다. 피복작물의 영양생장기 추출물에서 유근 생장 억제율이 가장 높았으며 $GR_{50}$ 값도 낮게 나타났다. 피복작물 추출물의 총 페놀화합물 함량도 영양생장기 때 가장 높았고, 결실기로 생육이 진전되면서 감소되었다. HPLC 분석 결과 크림손클로버 추출물에서 검출 된 p-hydroxybenzoic acid를 제외한 나머지 phenolic acid 함량들은 총 페놀화합물의 함량과 다른 경향을 보였으며, 헤어리베치 추출물에서는 coumarin, 호밀 추출물에서는 BOA와 caffeic acid를 제외한 나머지 물질들이 개화기에서 가장 높은 함량을 나타냈다. 그러나 크림손클로버와 호밀 추출물에서 분석 물질들의 총 함량은 영양생장기 추출물에서 가장 높게 나타났다.

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Stimulate Vegetative Growth and Asexual Reproduction of Kalanchoe daigremontiana

  • Certain bacterial species associate with plant roots in soil. The plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) stimulate plant growth and yield in greenhouse and field. Here, we examined whether application of known bacilli PGPR strains stimulated growth and asexual reproduction in the succulent plant Kalanchoe daigremontiana. Four PGPR strains B. amyloliquefaciens IN937a, B. cereus BS107, B. pumilus INR7, and B. subtilis GB03 were applied to young plantlets by soil-drenching, and plant growth and development was monitored for three months. Aerial growth was significantly stimulated in PGPR-inoculated plants, which was observed as increases in plant height, shoot weight, and stem width. The stimulated growth influenced plant development by increasing the total number of leaves per plant. Treatment with bacilli also increased the total root biomass compared with that of control plants, and led to a 2-fold increase in asexual reproduction and plantlet formation on the leaf. Collectively, our results firstly demonstrate that Bacillus spp. promote vegetative development of K. daigremontiana, and the enhanced growth stimulates asexual reproduction and plantlet formation.

Effects of Water Deficit on Leaf Growth during Vegetative Growth Period in Soybean

  • Leaf area is critical for crop light interception, and thereby has a substantial influence on crop yield. This experiment was conducted to characterize the development of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] leaf area. Plastochron index and leaf relative growth rate of Jackson was contrasted with the PI416937, which also has demonstrated tolerance to drought. First, plastochron ratio (PR) and plastochron index (PI) were evaluated in greenhouse to compare the leaf growth rate between two genotypes under well-watered condition. There was reasonable constancy of PR between two genotypes. The PR means of Jackson and PI416937 were 0.41 and 0.44, respectively. A fairly smooth increase of PI during vegetative stage was observed. Second, the relative growth rates were graphed against leaf area, normalized with respect to final leaf area, under well-watered and water-deficit conditions. Leaf growth was sustained longer in well-watered condition than water-deficit condition and there was a sizable proportion of leaves which was ceased earlier their growth in water-deficit condition compared to well-watered condition. The leaf relative growth rate of Jackson until leaves had completed at 45% of their growth during water deficit period was higher than that of PI416937.

Effects of Ridge Height in Dry Paddy Field on Growth and Seed Yield of Soybean Cultivars

  • Excessive soil water in paddy field induces growth losses during the vegetative stages of soybean plants. Our objectives were to know growth responses of soybean as affected by the level of ridge heights. A field experiment was conducted at the Research Farm of Korea University near Seoul in 1996. Ten cultivars of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) were planted at the ridge heights of 10, 30, and 50cm in paddy soil on 27 June. Total dry matter accumulation at the 10cm ridge height was severely decreased until the growth stage of R5 as compared to the ridge heights of 30 and 50cm, and this decrement was mainly due to both reduced leaf and stem dry weights. However, seed dry weight was not significantly decreased at the lower ridge height with the increment of harvest index. Cultivar differences were found on seed dry weight, crop growth rate from R1 to R5, and leaf/stem ratio of R5. From the above results, soybean growth responses to excessive soil water in paddy field were different between seed filling stage and late vegetative to early reproductive growth stages.

Antibacterial and Sporicidal Activity of Macelignan Isolated from Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt.) against Bacillus cereus

  • Macelignan is a bioactive compound isolated from nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt.) which has been traditionally used for the food and pharmaceutical purposes. In this study, the activities of macelignan against vegetative cells and spores of Bacillus cereus were evaluated in vitro. Our results showed that the vegetative cells of B. cereus were significantly inhibited in growth by macelignan with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of $4{\mu}g/mL$. The vegetative cells of B. cereus were completely killed with minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of $8{\mu}g/mL$ of macelignan. Killing time of macelignan against vegetative cells of B. cereus was very fast; endpoint of macelignan was reached after 4 hr of incubation at $4{\times}MIC$. Macelignan inactivated more than 3-log (99.9%) of spores/mL of B. cereus at the concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. Macelignan was found to be effective against vegetative cells and spores of B. cereus. These results suggest that macelignan might be good to be developed as a food preservative.

서산 간척지의 염도와 벼의 생육에 관한 연구 (Studies on Salinity and Growth of Rice at Seosan Reclaimed Land)

  • The effects of salinity on the growth and production of rice were studied at Seosan reclaimed land from July to October, 1995. The plant height, the number of living aleaves, dead leaves and total leaves, the number of the grains and the dry weight of the grains per individual, and the dry weight of above the ground in $25cm{\times}25cm$ quadrat were investigated on 5 plots whers were different salinity. The plant height, the number of living leaves and total leaves and the number of grains and the dry weight of grains per individual, and the dry weight of above the ground decreased as the salinity of water increase and the number of dead leaves of rice increased as the salinity of water decrease. The effect of salinity on the reproductive production is severer than the vegetative production. Because of the salinity, the growth and the production of the rice at Seosan reclaimed land are worse than the normal rice field.

갈대속(Phragmites spp.)식물의 식생공법 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Development of Planting Methods for Phragmites spp.)

  • Planting methods of seeding, seed net, sprig net and sprigging were evaluated for influence on the covering rate and the growth of Phragmites spp. The results were as follows. 1. Covering rate was high within 4 months when propagated by sprig net, seeding and sprigging but became same within 5 months afterwards regardless of Planting methods. 2. Growth of leaf height and width was high on vegetative types of Planting methods such as sprig net and sprigging when compared with on seed types of Planting methods such as seeding and seed net. 3. Sprig net showed good covering rate and growth than sprigging when compared within vegetative types of planting. 4. In this study, sprig net was figured out as the best type of Planting methods than any other types of Planting methods for the restoration of a shore vegetation in a urban stream.

Effects of Nutrient Solution Application Methods and Rhizospheric Ventilation on Vegetative Growth of Young Moth Orchids without a Potting Medium in a Closed-Type Plant Factory

  • Background and objective: Moth orchids in the vegetative stage are suitable for a multi-layer growing environment in a closed-type plant factory which can be a good alternative that can reduce production costs by reducing cultivation time and energy cost per plant. This study was conducted to find out the optimal rhizospheric environment for different irrigation methods without a potting medium and rhizospheric ventilation for the vegetative growth of young Phalaenopsis hybrid 'Blanc Rouge' (P. KV600 × P. Kang 1) and Phalaenopsis Queen Beer 'Mantefon' in a closed-type plant factory system. Methods: The one-month-old clonal micropropagules with bare roots rapped with a sponges were fixed on the holes of styrofoam plates above growth beds, and were watered using the ebb-and-flow (EBB) and aeroponic (AER) methods with Ichihashi solution (0.5 strength) once a day at 06:00 (P) or 18:00 (S), and both (PS). Rhizospheric ventilation (V) was also applied to change the temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 concentration of the beds. Plants potted into sphagnum moss and watered once a week were used as the control group. Results: After 12 months of treatment, the growth characteristics of the EBB groups were the best among the treatment groups without a medium, but no effect of irrigation timing was observed. V reduced the temperature, relative humidity and CO2 concentration of the beds. Whereas, EBB+V (ebb-and-flow with ventilation) improved plant growth and reduced the occurrence of disorders and withering. Especially, EBB+V showed a similar performance to the control group. Conclusion: The results indicated that the optimal irrigation method without a potting medium for producing middle-aged potted moth orchids was the EBB system with forced rhizospheric ventilation. Therefore, further studies on the optimal ventilation method and moisture control of the crown need to be carried out to develop the irrigation system without a potting medium for vertical farming in closed-type plant factories.
