This study was carried out to introduce the forest cover types of the Baekdudaegan inhabiting the number of native tree species. In order to understand the vegetation distribution characteristics of the Baekdudaegan, a vegetation survey was conducted on the major 20 mountains of the Baekdudaegan. The vegetation data were collected from 3,959 sample points by the point-centered quarter method. Each mountain was classified into 4-7 forests by using various multivariate statistical methods such as cluster analysis, indicator species analysis, multiple discriminant analysis, and species composition analysis. The forests were classified mainly according to the relative abundance of Quercus mongolica. There was a total of 111 classified forests and these forests were integrated into the following nine forest cover types using the percentage similarity index and by clustering according to vegetation type: 1) Mongolian oak, 2) Mongolian oak and other deciduous, 3) Oaks (Mixed Quercus spp.), 4) Korean red pine, 5) Korean red pine and oaks, 6) ash, 7) mixed mesophytic, 8) subalpine zone coniferous, and 9) miscellaneous forest. Forests grouped within the subalpine zone coniferous and miscellaneous classifications were characterized by similar environmental conditions and those forests that did not fit in any other category, respectively.

This study was conducted to investigated woody species community classification and understory vegetation characteristics of Abies nephrolepis forest in Mt. Gyebang and Mt. Odae designated as Protected Area for Forest Genetic Resource Conservation and National Park. Vascular plants were surveyed as following; 55 family, 148 species, 3 sub species, 14 variety, 2 form 167 taxa. As an analysis of the species estimator of Jackknife 1, 29 survey plots could be representative of vegetation in study site. Results of the woody species, 3 communities were divided by cluster analysis(A=Abies nephrolepis-Tilia amurensis, B=Betula ermanii-Abies nephrolepis, C=Quercus mongolica-Abies nephrolepis). Using MRPP-test, there were significant differences between the communities indicating analysis of the appropriate group classification(p<0.01). The basal area and altitude were analyzed by negative relationship for NMS ordination. By analyzing plexus diagram of woody species, Acer pseudosieboldianum is strong associated with Quercus mongolica and Rhododendron schlippenbachii. Magnolia sieboldii is strong associated with Acer pictum subsp. mono etc.
As impervious area increases due to urbanization, rainfall on the impervious area does not infiltrate into the ground, and stormwater drains quickly. Low impact development (LID) practices have been suggested as alternatives to infiltrate and store water in soil layers. The practices in South Korea is applied to urban development projects, urban renewal projects, urban regeneration projects, etc., it is required to perform literature research, watershed survey, soil quality, etc. for the LID practices implementation. Prior to the LID implementation at fields, there is a need to simulate its' effect on watershed hydrology, and Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) provides an opportunity to simulate LID practices. The LIDs applied in South Korea are infiltration-based practices, vegetation-based practices, rainwater-harvesting practices, etc. Vegetation-based practices includes bio-retention cell and rain garden, bio-retention cells are mostly employed in the model, adjusting the model parameters to simulate various practices. The bio-retention cell requires inputs regarding surface layer, soil layer, and drain layer, but the inputs for the drain layer are applied without sufficient examination, while the model parameters or inputs are somewhat influential to the practice effects. Thus, the approach to simulate vegetation-based LID practices in SWMM uses was explored and suggested for better LID simulation in South Korea.

After 1960 forest and ecosystem are rapidly destroyed by industrialization and urbanization. Accordingly, studies that produce vegetation map continue for forest and ecosystem management. Since 1986 national natural environment survey is being conducted in Korea. Also, vegetation information is managed properly through forest geospatial information service(FGIS) of the Department of Environment when NGIS project was promoted since 1995. But it provide dominant species information based on text. In particular, some vegetation information dose not provide to end-user. Therefore, we suggest construction method of vegetation information management system based on GIS to solve the problem. Also, we suggest connection method of related system for an accurate analysis, planning and decision-making support.

The main purpose of this study was to classify forest vegetation effectively using Landsat Thematic Mapper data(June, 1994) in mountainous region. The research area was the Mt. Wolak Experimental Forest of Chungbuk National University, near Chungju and Jecheon city, Chungcheongbuk-do. To classify forest vegetation effectively, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) was used to reduce topographic effects. This NDVI was modified and transformed to the value of 0 to 255, and then the modified values were combined with other Landsat Thematic Mapper bands. To classify forest and land cover types, unsupervised classification method was used. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. Combinations of band "3, 5, NDVI" in Landsat Thematic Mapper data showed a good separation with high accuracy. The expected classification accuracy was 95.1% in Landsat Thematic Mapper data. 2. The Land Cover types were classified into six groups : coniferous forest, deciduous forest, mixed forest, paddy and grass, non-forest, and other undetectable areas. As these classified results were compared with the reconnaissance survey and aerial black and white infrared photographs, the overall classification accuracy was 76.5% in Landsat Thematic Mapper data. 3. The portion of non-forest in Mt. Wolak area was 1.9%. The percentages of coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests were 30.9%, 35.7% and 26.4%, respectively. 4. As these classified results were compared with other reference data, the percentages of coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests increased, but the portion of non-forest was exceedingly diminished. These differences are thought to be from the different research method and the different season of received Landsat Thematic Mapper data.

By the activation of environment-friendly river works, application of vegetation mats is increasing, however, evaluation techniques for hydraulic stability of vegetation mats are not presented. This study is conducted to develop the objective test method for vegetation mats. Two kind of vegetation mats are tested by the real scale experiments, and hydraulic quantities are measured and analyzed to evaluate acting shear stresses. To evaluate soil loss, Terrestrial 3D LiDAR measurement is conducted and soil loss index are calculated from changes of bed elevation. Quantified evaluation for permissible shear stresses is conducted by graphical method for acting shear stresses and soil loss index. By the results of precision survey, changes of sub soil are limited to local range in stable cases and relatively large changes of sub soil which is similar to natural river bed are detected in unstable cases. From the study, evaluation of permissible shear stresses by ASTM D 6040 is avaliable in the failure mechanism and failure criteria by soil loss index.
To investigate the effects of forest fire on the change of vegetation and soil conditions by the lapse of time, the 5th soil survey and vegetation analysis were carried out in July of 1988 at the rocky areas of Mt. Kwanak, where ground fire broke out 5 years ago. Three-year increasing trends of organic matter content, the value of pH, and total nitrogen content stabilized after the restoration of the vegetation. By the comparison of the occurrences of the species for 5 years after the forest fire, woody and herbaceous plants were categorized into 4 groups, i,e., invasive, sensitive, tolerant, and neutral species to the forest fire. Although such diversity indices as the species diversity and similarity index indicate that the restoration of damaged vegetation to the original species composition was proceeded for the period, the restoration of vegetation to the original crown closure and tree growth was not proceeded yet.
This study examined the coastal sand dune vegetation before and after the construction of an embankment on Anmado Island in order to compare vegetation in relation to the development of islands. A total of 24 species distributed on the sand dunes. 18 species were found to be in common before and after the construction of the embankment, which included Vitex rotundifolia, Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii, Zoysia sinica, etc. The species which were not found in this survey included Rumex japonicus, Setaria viridis, Portulaca oleracea, Artemisia japonica, Poiygonum aviculare, etc, and new species included Arena fatua, Carex boottiana, Lycium chinense, Leonurus sibiricus, Torilis japonica, Solanum carolinense, etc. The washing away of sand brought about the changes in habitat and the increase in naturalized plants, which included Oenothera odorata, Lepidium apetalum, Bidens bipinnata, Erigeron canadensis, Datura stramonium, Xanthium strumarium, Arena fatua, Solanum carolinense etc. In addition, the disturbance to this habitat led to the changes in vegetation. The main plant communities in the surveyed site were classified as Vitex rotundifolia-Imperata cylindrica var. koenigil community, Zoysia sinica-Calystegia soldanella community and Messerschmidia sibirica community. The sand dune vegetation on Anmado Island changed with regard to the community and the composition of species after the construction of the embankment, due to the sand being severely eroded. While Vitex rotundifolia community and Commelina communis community were found before the construction of the embankment, they were replaced by Vitex rotundifolia-Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii community, Zoysia sinica-Calystegia soldanella community and Messerschmidia sibirica community, after the construction of the embankment.
