  • The study presents the earthquake performance of the Bosphorus Bridge under multi-point earthquake excitation considering the spatially varying site-specific earthquake motions. The elaborate FE model of the bridge is firstly established depending on the new considerations of the used FEM software specifications, such as cable-sag effect, rigid link and gap elements. The modal analysis showed that singular modes of the deck and the tower were relatively effective in the dynamic behavior of the bridge due to higher total mass participation mass ratio of 80%. The parameters and requirements to be considered in simulation process are determined to generate the spatially varying site-specific ground motions. Total number of twelve simulated ground motions are defined for the multi-support earthquake analysis (Mp-sup). In order to easily implement multi-point earthquake excitation to the bridge, the practice-oriented procedure is summarized. The results demonstrated that the Mp-sup led to high increase in sectional forces of the critical components of the bridge, especially tower base section and tensile force of the main and back stay cables. A close relationship between the dynamic response and the behavior of the bridge under the Mp-sup was also obtained. Consequently, the outcomes from this study underscored the importance of the utilization of the multi-point earthquake analysis and the necessity of considering specifically generated earthquake motions for suspension bridges.

  • This study provides empirical evidence that the stochastic beta model based on Bayesian analysis outperforms the existing conditional beta model and GARCH model in terms of the estimation accuracy and the explanatory power in the cross-section of stock returns in Korea. Betas estimated by the stochastic beta model explain $30{\sim}50%$ of the cross-sectional variation in stock-returns, whereas other time-varying beta models account for less than 3%. Such a difference in explanatory power across models turns out to come from the fact that the stochastic beta model absorbs the variation due to the market anomalies such as size, BE/ME, and idiosyncratic volatility. These results support the rational asset pricing model in that market anomalies are closely related to the variation of expected returns generated by time-varying betas.

  • As the number of compound cavity modes within the stopband of DFB sections decreases, the frequency of mode hopping decreases for the variation of $\Delta$λ$_{B}$, which represents the difference between the Bragg wavelengths of two DFB sections, so that the number of abrupt changes of pulsation frequencies decreases. In addition, the pulsation frequency varies continuously for the variation of the phase in a phase tuning section for a fixed $\Delta$λ$_{B}$. The number of compound cavity modes within the stopband decreases as the length of DFB sections increases and the length of a phase tuning section decreases. Thus stable self-pulsation operations for the variation of $\Delta$λ$_{B}$ and the phase in a phase tuning section could be obtained by proper selection of the coupling strength and the length of each section.ction.

  • In this study, the accuracy and efficiency of a composite rotor blade cross-section analysis program, Ksec2d-AE, which is available at an educational web-based platform called EDISON-CSD, are assessed for possible use in undergraduate structural analysis projects. To this purpose, the convergence of cross-sectional constants by varying the number of finite elements in the cross-section of a wind turbine blade is investigated. The stiffness constants along with the cross-sectional engineering offsets obtained using Ksec2d-AE are validated against a 3D finite element analysis program MSC NASTRAN.

  • In this study, a new design method of pile bent structure considering plastic hinge was proposed on the basis of the beam-column model. Based on the analysis results, it is found that the positioning of plastic hinge on the pile bent structure was influenced by nonlinear behavior of material and p-$\Delta$ effect. Moreover, concrete cracking began to occur at the joint section between the pile and column in case of pile bent structure with different cross-sections. The plastic hinge can be developed on the pile bent structure when large displacement was occurred, and pile bent structures can be maintained well only if it is developed on the column part. Therefore, in this study, the optimized cross-section ratio between column and pile was analyzed to induce the plastic hinge at the joint section between the pile and column. Based on this, the optimized diameter ratio of pile and column can be obtained below the inflection point of the bi-linear curve depending on the relations between column-pile diameter ratio($D_c/D_p$) and normalized lateral cracking load ratio($F/F_{Dc=Dp}$). And through this study, it is founded that in-depth limit($L_{As}$=0.4%) normalized by the pile length($L_P$) are proportionally decreased as the pile length($L_P/D_P$) increases up to $L_P/D_P$=17.5, and beyond that in-depth limit converges to a constant value. Finally, it is found that the proposed limit depth by taking into account the minimum concrete-steel ratio would be more economical design of the pile bent structure.

  • One of the efficient procedures for the solution of partial differential equations is the method of differential quadrature. This method has been applied to a large number of cases to circumvent the difficulties of programming complex algorithms for the computer, as well as excessive use of storage due to conditions of complex geometry and loading. Under in-plane uniform distributed load, the buckling of asymmetric curved beam with varying cross section is analyzed by using differential quadrature method (DQM). Critical load due to diverse cross section variation and opening angle is calculated. Analysis result of DQM is compared with the result of exact analytic solution. As DQM is used with small grid points, exact analysis result is shown. New result according to diverse cross section variation is also suggested.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-cancer activity of cisplatin by studying its effects on cell viability and identifying the mechanisms underlying the induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines with varying p53 mutation status. Materials and Methods: Three OSCC cell lines, YD-8 (p53 point mutation), YD-9 (p53 wild type), and YD-38 (p53 deletion) were used. To determine the cytotoxic effect of cisplatin, MTS assay was performed. The cell cycle alteration and apoptosis were analyzed using flow cytometry. Western blot analysis was used to detect the expression of cell cycle alteration- or apoptosis-related proteins as well as p53. Results: Cisplatin showed a time- and dose-dependent anti-proliferative effect in all cell lines. Cisplatin induced G2/M cell accumulation in the three cell lines after treatment with 0.5 and $1.0{\mu}g/mL$ of cisplatin for 48 hours. The proportion of annexin V-FITC-stained cells increased following treatment with cisplatin. The apoptotic proportion was lower in the YD-38 cell line than in the YD-9 or YD-8 cell lines. Also, immunoblotting analysis indicated that p53 and p21 were detected only in YD-8 and YD-9 cell lines after cisplatin treatment. Conclusion: In this study, cisplatin showed anti-cancer effects via G2/M phase arrest and apoptosis, with some difference among OSCC cell lines. The mutation status of p53 might have influenced the difference observed among cell lines. Further studies on p53 mutation status are needed to understand the biological behavior and characteristics of OSCCs and to establish appropriate treatment.

  • In construction of a large cross section NATM tunnel, to keep the tunnel face stability by the ground itself bench cut method is commonly used. In order to necessity of partial face excavation method, we have to look for more enhanced method that can maintain better stress intensity. This paper presents a stress distribution of the Center Diaphragm Method from the partial face excavation methods, with the numerical analysis, and induced the optimal face distance, which is minimizing stress concentration and the optimal excavation step. Commerical 3 dimensional continuum analyzing FLAC-3D Ver. 2.1 program is used for the analysis. Analyses were performed to investigate ground behavior for tunnels with variable bench-length varying from 2m to 40m.

  • The wheel wear of a railway vehicle is mainly generated when maneuvering on a curved track. The change in the wheel profile affects the dynamic stability of the vehicle. In this analysis, the wheel wear volume was calculated while changing the velocity and radius of the curve to analyze the wear characteristics of a wheel at a curved section. The wear index was calculated from a vehicle dynamic analysis based on a multibody dynamics analysis and wear volume from a wear model by British Rail Research. The wear volume at a radius of 300 m is dominant compared with other radii. The wear volume was calculated by assigning different coefficients of friction to the tread and flange of the wheel to investigate the effect of lubrication on the wear characteristics. The effect of the improvement by lubrication is calculated by varying the radius of the track, and is assessed on an actual urban railway section.

  • The natural frequency of a system is commonly used in evaluating the serviceability condition of a floor. However. the current equations recommended in many building codes do not consider the various material types of a slab system; thus. different results are observed. Likewise. the transformation of a slab section required to predict the natural frequency of a composite deck plate is complicated. due to the varying shapes of the deck plates. Therefore. a new and simplified method of transforming a composite slab into an equivalent concrete slab is proposed. he modified vibration prediction equation was proposed based on the current vibration prediction equation recommended by LRFD. Compared to other equations. it is the closest to those obtained from experiments. The modified equation provides about 14.3% more accurate results than that recommended by LRFD. Likewise. the applicability of the proposed equation to other types of composite deck plate floor system was validated.
