  • First zoea of cyclograpsinine crab Chasmagnathus convexus (De Haan, 1835) belonging to the family Varunidae, is described and illustrated in detail based on laboratory-hatched material from an ovigerous female collected in Seumjingang river mouth, southern Korea. Morphological comparison is made with previous description of C. convexus from Japan, The first zoea of C. convexus can be readily distinguished from those of six species of Cyclograpsus intermedius Ortmann, 1894, Helicana japonica (K. Sakai and Yatsuzuka, 1980), Helicana wuana (Rathbun, 1931), Helice tientsinensis Rathbun, 1931, Helice tridens (De Man, 1835), and Pseudohelice quadrata (Dana, 1851), the other known cyclograpsinine species in Korea by having the lateral carapace spine, a pair of dorsolateral processes on the fourth abdominal somite, the exopod of antenna with three setae, and the exopod of antenna as being 24.7% length to the protopod.

  • A hole dwelling holothurian symbiotic crab was collected in the low tidal mark in Namhae Island. The crab was identified as Asthenognathus inaequipes Stimpson, 1858 and found to be new to Korean waters. The species was briefly illustrated and described.

  • As a result of continuous taxonomic studies on the Korean crabs, two varunid crabs, Hemigrapsus takanoi Asakura and Watanabe, 2005 and Sestrostoma toriumii (Takeda, 1974), are newly reported from Korean waters. Hemigrapsus takanoi, as a sibling species of H. penicillatus, has not been recognized in Korean waters, and this species occurs in the sympatric habitat with H. penicillatus in the Korean peninsula. Sestrostoma toriumii (Takeda, 1974) is associated with thallassinid Upogebia major (De Haan, 1841) and echiuran Urechis unicintus (Von Drache, 1881) as the case of S. balssi (Shen, 1932). The Korean S. toriumii showed smaller size than those mentioned in the original description. Their illustrations and pictures are provided with descriptions, and the distributions of these species in the Korean peninsula are also provided.

  • The varunid crab, Varuna yui Hwang & Takeda, 1986, is known as widely distributed in the Southeast Asian region. Three specimens of varunid crabs were collected near the estuary of the river from Korea and identified as V. yui. Varuna yui could be distinguished from the other congeneric species, V. litterata (Fabricius, 1798), by having a more extended mesial lobe on the distal region of the male first gonopod. In this paper, morphological diagnosis and illustrations of the newly collected V. yui are provided. The specimens examined herein were deposited in the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea and Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources.

  • Pseudohelice subquadrata (Dana, 1851) is endangered due to its restricted habitat; hence, it has been designated as a marine protected species and endangered species by law in Korea. It has been recorded only Jeju-do and Geomun-do, Republic of Korea. The present study, is the first report on a cytochrome c oxidase subunit I DNA barcode for P. subquadrata. The maximum intra-specific genetic distance among all P. subquadrata individuals was found to be 0.5%, whereas inter-genetic distance within the same genus was 17.2-21.5% compared with Helice tientsinensis (Rathbun, 1931), H. tridens (De Haan, 1835), H. epicure (Ng et al., 2018), and Helicana wuana (Rathbun, 1931). Our barcoding data can thus be used as reference for restoration and conservation studies on P. subquadrata, which are designated as marine protected species.
