  • The condensation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-410A in a small diameter tube were investigated. The main components of the refrigerant loop consist of a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flowmeter, an evaporator (preheater), and a condenser (test section). The test section consists of smooth, horizontal copper tube of 3.38 mm outer diameter and 1.77 mm inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes varied from 450 to $1050\;kg/(m^2s)$ and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95. The main results were summarized as follows : the condensation heat transfer coefficient also increases with increasing mass flux and quality. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was slightly higher than that of R-22. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed significant deviations with experimental data except for the ranges of low quality and low mass flux.

  • In this study, experiments were carried out to investigate the convective heat transfer characteristics of rectangular microchannels. The sample used in the experiments contained 20 rectangular microchannels in parallel. The channels had a hydraulic diameter of 700 ${\mu}m$. Distilled water was used as the working fluid. In the experiments, the Reynolds number ranged from 400 to 800, heat flux ranged from 35 to 85 kW/$m^2$, and the inlet fluid temperature was $20^{\circ}C$. As a result, the convective heat transfer coefficient increased upon increasing the Reynolds number and ranged from 4.6 to 6.4 kW/$m^2/^{\circ}C$ in the thermally fully developed region. Moreover, the higher the Reynolds number, the longer the thermal entry length in the rectangular microchannels. However, it was observed that a variable heat flux did not affect the thermal entry length. In conclusion, a correlation was proposed to indicate the heat transfer characteristics in a thermally fully developed region.

  • Artificial neural network (ANN) simulation is used to predict the dynamic change of permeate flux during wheat starch industry wastewater microfiltration with and without static turbulence promoter. The experimental program spans range of a sedimentation times from 2 to 4 h, for feed flow rates 50 to 150 L/h, at transmembrane pressures covering the range of $1{\times}10^5$ to $3{\times}10^5Pa$. ANN predictions of the wastewater microfiltration are compared with experimental results obtained using two different set of microfiltration experiments, with and without static turbulence promoter. The effects of the training algorithm, neural network architectures on the ANN performance are discussed. For the most of the cases considered, the ANN proved to be an adequate interpolation tool, where an excellent prediction was obtained using automated Bayesian regularization as training algorithm. The optimal ANN architecture was determined as 4-10-1 with hyperbolic tangent sigmoid transfer function transfer function for hidden and output layers. The error distributions of data revealed that experimental results are in very good agreement with computed ones with only 2% data points had absolute relative error greater than 20% for the microfiltration without static turbulence promoter whereas for the microfiltration with static turbulence promoter it was 1%. The contribution of filtration time variable to flux values provided by ANNs was determined in an important level at the range of 52-66% due to increased membrane fouling by the time. In the case of microfiltration with static turbulence promoter, relative importance of transmembrane pressure and feed flow rate increased for about 30%.

  • Finite element models were developed for thermal and residual stress analysis for the specific welding problems. They were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the various welding heat input models, such as ramp heat input function and lumped pass models. Through the parametric studies, thermal-mechanical modeling sensitivity to the ramp function and lumping techniques was determined by comparing the predicted results with experimental data. The kinetics for residual stress formation during welding can be developed by iteration of various proposed mechanisms in the parametric study. A ramp heat input function was developed to gradually apply the heat flux with variable amplitude to the model. This model was used to avoid numerical convergence problems due to an instantaneous increase in temperature near the fusion zone. Additionally, it enables the model to include the effect of a moving arc in a two-dimensional plane. The ramp function takes into account the variation in the out of plane energy flow in a 2-D model as the arc approaches, travels across, and departs from each plane under investigation. A lumped pass model was developed to reduce the computation cost in the analysis of multipass welds. Several weld passes were assumed as one lumped pass in this model. Recommendations were provided about ramp lumping techniques and the optimum number of weld passes that can be combined into a single thermal input.

  • The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop during gas cooling process of carbon dioxide in a horizontal tube were investigated. The experiments were conducted without oil in the refrigerant loop. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flowmeter, an evaporator, and a gas cooler(test section). The main components of the water loop consist of a variable-speed pump, an isothermal tank, and a flowmeter. The gas cooler is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. The test section consists of smooth, horizontal stainless steel tube of the outer diameter of 9.53mm and of the inner diameter of 7.75mm. The length of the test section is 6m. The refrigerant mass fluxes were 200∼300kg/(m2$.$s) and the inlet pressure of the gas cooler varied from 7.5㎫ to 8.5㎫. The main results were summarized as follows : Pressure drop of CO2 increases with increasing gas cooler pressure. The friction factors of CO2 in a horizontal tube show a relatively good agreement with the correlation by Blasius. The heat transfer coefficient of CO2 in transcritical region increases with decreasing gas cooler pressure and decreasing mass flux of CO2. Most of correlations proposed in a transcritical region showed significant deviations with experimental data except for those predicted by Gnielinski.

  • In the paper, a wireless charger with the function of auto-shutdown for fully implantale middle ear hearing devices (F-IMEHD) has been designed. The wireless charger can communicate with an implant module to be turned off automatically shutdown after an internal rechargeable battery has been fully-charged by electromagnetic coupling using two coils. For the communication with an implant module, the wireless charger uses the load shift keying (LSK) method. But, the variation of the mutual inductance due to the different distance between two coils can cause the communication error in receiving the fully-charged signal from an implant module. To solve the problem, the implemented wireless charger has a variable reference generator for LSK communication. The wireless charger generates proper level of the reference voltage for a comparator using an ADC (analog-to-digital converter) and a DAC (digital-to-analog converter). Through the result of experiment, it has been confirmed that the presented wireless charger can detect signals from implantable module. And wireless charger can stop generating electromagnetic flux after an implanted battery has been fully charged in spite of variable coil distance according to different skin thickness.

  • Air temperature deviation (ATD) is one of major indicators to represent spatial distribution of urban heat island (UHI), which is induced from the urbanization. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of air temperature deviation about Climate Analysis Seoul (CAS) workbench, which had developed by National Institute Meteorological Science and TU Berlin. Comparison and correlation analysis for CAS ATD including meso-scale air temperature deviation, local-scale air temperature deviation, total air temperature deviation, surface heat flux deviation, cold air production deviation among meso-scale numerical modelling variable in 'Seoul Region', micro-scale numerical modelling in 'Detail Region', and CAS workbench variable using observation data in ground stations. Comparison between night time OBS ATD and CAS ATD show that have most close values. Most of observations ($dT_{max}$ and $dT_{min}$) have highly positive ($dT_{SHP}$, $dT_{CA}$, MD, TD, $f_{BS}$, $f_{US}$, $f_{WS}$, $h_B$) and negative ($f_{VS}$, $f_{TV}$, $h_V$, Z) correlations. However, CAS workbench needs further improvement of both observational framework and analytical framework to resolve the problems; (1) night time OBS ATD of has closer values in compare with at high rise mountain area and (2) correlations are very dependable to meteorological scale.

  • Response surface methodology was used to investigate the quality of clarified mixed apple and carrot juices using ultrafitration. Apple and carrot juices were blended at the ratio of 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1. A three-variable, three-level central composite design was employed where the independent variables were the blend ratio, temperature and average transmembrane pressure (ATP). With increasing temperature and pressure, flux linearly increased regardless of blending ratio. Blend juice with 75% apple showed the highest soluble sugar and total sugar content in apple and carrot blend juices. Soluble solid contents were more affected by blending ratio than temperature and ATP. Total sugar contents were greatly affected by temperature; increasing temperature led to higher total sugar content up to $25^{\circ}C$. Higher carrot ratio led to higher vitamin C content. In general, higher acidity was achieved by higher apple content and acidity was increased with increasing temperature. Turbidity increased for all samples as APT increased, with the blending ratio of 1:1 (apple:carrot) showing the highest turbidity. Viscosity was greatly changed in the blending ratio of 3:1 (apple:carrot) juice. The polynomial models developed by RSM were satisfactory to describe the relationships between the studied factors and the responses. Analytical optimization gave $flux=0.216\;L/m^2.h$, soluble $solids=10.39^{\circ}Brix$, total sugar=71.32 mg/mL, vitamin C=315.18 mg%, acidity=7.78 mL, turbidity=0.017, and viscosity=1.44 cp, when using a $temperature=44.97^{\circ}C$, ATP=113.57 kPa, and blend ratio=28.50%.

  • The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ (R-744) in a horizontal tube was investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator (test section). The test section consists of a smooth, horizontal stainless steel tube of inner diameter of 4.57mm. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 400 to $900kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of 5 to $20^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to $40kW/m^2$. The test results showed the heat transfer of $CO_2$ has a greater effect on nucleate boiling more than convective boiling. Mass flux of $CO_2$ does not affect nucleate boiling too much. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, All of the existing correlations for the heat transfer coefficient underestimated the experimental data. However Jung et al.'s correlation showed a good agreement with the experimental data. Therefore, it is necessary to develope accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in horizontal tubes.
