  • Sound packages and damping materials have been widely applied on the floor to decrease the interior noise of a vehicle. Based on the previous researches on the low-noise vehicles, weight optimization through minimization of damping material usage is required while decreasing mid and high frequency range noise by application of sound packages. This paper describes the analysis process of robust design of vehicle body structure before applying damping materials and focuses on the analysis and test process of the location optimization at the stage of damping material application. A vibration experiment for the analysis of floor panel velocity with respect to the excitation of suspension attachment parts at the underfloor of a vehicle is performed. And through the improvement correlation between FEA and TEST, a design guide to optimize damping materials application in the early design stage is proposed. A research on vibration damping steel sheets and liquid acoustic spray on deadener(LASD) is performed to minimize manufacturing time and to minimize the space for pre-existing asphalt damping materials. As results of this study, panel stiffness is achieved through curved surface panel and bead optimization. And test baseline of optimum design is suggested through damping material optimization. And finally, through re-establishing the analysis process for vibration reduction of vehicle floors and lightweight design of damping materials, it is possible to design damping materials efficiently in the preceding stage of design.

  • This paper presents the property of the Squeeze Film Damper (SFD) using Magneto-Rheological fluid (MR fluid). The damping property of a SFD for a flexible rotor system varied according to vibration mode. MR fluid is known as a functional fluid with controllable apparent viscosity of the fluid by applied magnetic field strength. When the MR fluid is applied in the SFD, the SFD using MR fluid can effectively reduce vibrations of the flexible rotor in a wide range of rotating speed by control of the applied magnetic field strength. To investigate in detail the SFD using MR fluid, the SFD to support one mass was constructed and its performance was experimentally investigated in the present study. The damping property of the SFD using MR fluid has viscous damping by Newtonian fluid, but not Coulomb friction by Bingham fluid. Therefore, The system damped by the SFD can be considered as a linear system.

  • A general method is presented for the analysis of the damping effectiveness of viscoelastic layer applied to elastic beam. The damping is attributed to the shear deformations of the treatment. Specific results are then given for sandwich beams with dissipative cores. The calculated results by this method are validated by comparison with the experimental results. Optimum design of a viscoelastic damping layer which is constrainedly cohered on a steel beam is discussed from the viewpoint of the modal loss factor. An object function is a loss factor of 3-layered beam and design variable is the thickness of constraining layer and viscoelastic layer. Optimum thickness can be obtained when 3-layered beam has a maximum loss factor.

  • This paper deals with an application of Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid to a small size mount for precision equipment of automobiles. MR fluid is known as a class of functional fluids with controllable apparent viscosity of fluid by the applied magnetic field strength. A typical MR fluid is a suspension where pure iron particles of 1-20 (m in diameter are dispersed in a liquid such as mineral oil or silicone oil, at the concentration of 20 - 40 vol%. Electro magnetic coil is installed at the bottom of a variable-damping mount filled with MR fluid, and performance of the mount was investigated experimentally. Furthermore, the Properties of the MR Mount on experimental study were explained analytically by mechanical model of the MR mount.

  • Flame characteristics and combustion stability of a swirl coaxial injector are studied experimentally. Characteristics of flame and combustion instability are analyzed with the parameter of MFR (momentum flux ratio) using hexane instead of kerosene. Flame patterns of blue and yellow are changed with variable MFR. Combustion instabilities are measured and analyzed by adopting a model chamber. Combustion instability mapping is made by evaluating damping factor at the 2 L (second longitudinal) mode with variable MFR in 63 cases for operating condition.

  • This special issue focuses on Smart Tuned Mass Dampers (STMD) that are either active or smart or semi-active in nature. Active tuned mass dampers or active mass dampers have found wide acceptance and have been implemented in many tall buildings and long span bridges. Recently researchers have developed a new class of smart tuned mass dampers using either variable stiffness and/or variable damping to effect the change in instantaneous frequency and damping. Since tuning plays a central role in STMDs it is of great current interest thus the topic of this special issue. Discussions of recent active and smart TMD implementations in tall buildings and bridges are also included.

  • In this paper, a sliding mode controller of a fluid engine mount using MR (Magneto-Rheological) fluid was discussed When the MR fluid is applied to a fluid mount, resistance of MR fluid can be controlled by electro-magnetic valve installed in the inertia track. Since the rheological property of the MR fluid shows a function of shear rate, the damping characteristics of the mount will be change according to the frequency. Changing an applied magnetic field to the valve changes the property of the mount, such as the resistance of the MR fluid, the notch and the resonant frequencies due to the fluid passing, quantity of the fluid passing, the effective piston area of the volumetric damping and stiffness. Therefore, the fluid mount using MR fluid can be regarded as a variable structure system The sliding mode control known well as a particular type of variable structure control was introduced in this study. The sliding mode control, which has inherent robustness, is also expected to improve the control performance in the engine mount The sliding mode controller for the mount formatted by taking into account the response property with a time constant to MR fluid and the variable mount property. The motion equations of the fluid mount are derived from Newton's law of motion and used in numerical simulation. Numerical simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the sliding mode controller.
