The amount of digitalized contents has been rapidly increased, but the main distribution channel of them is Internet which is easily accessible. Therefore 'security' necessarily arises as one of the most important issues and the method of protecting contents becomes a major research topic as much as data coding techniques. In recent years, many developers have studied on techniques that allow only authorized person to access contents. Among them the scrambling method is one of well-known security techniques. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective digital video scrambling method which utilizes the intra block properties of a recent video coding technique, H.264. Since intra prediction modes are adopted in H.264 standard, it is easy to scramble a video sequence with modification of the intra prediction modes. In addition to its simplicity, the proposed method does not increase bit rate after scrambling. The inter blocks are also distorted by scrambling intra blocks only. This paper introduces a new digital video scrambling method and verifies its effectiveness through simulation.
This paper describes an efficient harmonic-CELP speech coder by taking advantages of harmonic and CELP coders into account. According to frame voicing decision, the proposed harmonic-CELP coder adopts the RP-VSELP coder as a fast CELP in case of an unvoiced frame, or an improved harmonic coder in case of a voiced frame. The proposed coder has main features as follows: simple pitch detection, fast harmonic estimation, variable dimension harmonic vector quantization, perceptual weighting reflecting frequency resolution, fast harmonic synthesis, naturalness control using band voicing, and multi-mode. These features make the proposed coder require very low complexity, compared with HVXC coder To demonstrate the performance of the proposed coder, a 2.4 kbps coder has been implemented and compared with reference coders. From results of informal listening tests, the proposed coder showed good quality while requiring low delay and complexity.

IEEE802.15.3 and IEEE802.15.4 have defined the hybrid MAC protocols based on TDMA and CSMA where a multi-frame TDMA structure is employed so that multiple data frames can be transmitted within one timeslot to guarantee minimum delay bounds of isochroous traffic. However, TDMA has an intrinsic problem that cannot dynamically allocate optimal length of timeslot to each station. Therefore the idle timeslot can be produced by stations when each transmission queue is instantaneously empty during its timeslot, which would waste lots of timeslots especially in the multi-frame TDMA systems. In this paper, we propose a more flexible multiple-access scheme for the multi-frame TDMA system based on the concept of virtual slot which is accessible by every station with the highest priority for slot owner and lower priority for other stations. Finally, our simulation results from various environments show that proposed scheme can achieve magnitude improvement of total system throughput and average message delay by maximizing channel utilization.

Broadband code division multiple access(B-CDMA)previously proposed for personal communication services(PCS) is not suitable for high-speed data services with large variations in speed, because it is designed only for low-speed voice calls with small variations in speed. Meanwhile, hybrid intra-cell TDMA/inter-cell CDMA(Hybrid TDMA/CDMA) recently proposed could accomodate high-speed services easily because of its internal use of the TDMA scheme, but there would be much inefficiency in treating variable bit rate services due to the intrinsic properties of TDMA transmission scheme, In this paper, a media access control(MAC) protocol, called Resevation TDMA/CDMA, which uses a reservation scheme similar to the one in the packet reservation multiple access(PRMA) protocol to compensate for these shortcomings is proposed. In addition, the performance of this protocol is analyzed and compared with conventional protocols by computer simulation. According to the simulation results, it has been shown that the proposed Reservation TDMA/CDMA scheme could support various transmission rates of user data traffics easily, and it could utilize the variations of the treansmission rates in each active call more efficiently.
In this paper, a fast intermode decision scheme is introduced by efficiently performing the mode decision using statistical hypothesis testing for hierarchical B-picture coding of SVC, in which much computational power is expensed for combined variable block sizes and hierarchical B-pictures. The hypothesis testing in the proposed method is performed on $16{\times}16\;and\;8{\times}8$ blocks to have early termination for RD computation of all possible modes. The early termination in intermode decision is performed by comparing the pixel values of current blocks and corresponding motion-compensated blocks. The proposed scheme exhibits effective early termination behavior in intermode decision and leads to a significant reduction up to 69% in computational complexity with slight increment in bit amounts. The degradation of visual quality turns out to be negligible in terms of PSNR values.

Two main characteristics of VBR MPEG video traffic are different statistics according to different picture types and the periodic traffic pattern due to GOP structure. Especially, the I-pictures at the beginning of each GOP generate $$\mu$h more traffic than other pictures. When several VBR Mpeg video sources are superposed, the I-picture starting times of these sources may significantly affect the cell loss characteristics of ATM $$\mu$tiplexers. In this paper, we propse a performance model for ATM $$\mu$tiplexers with VBR MPEG video sources whose starting times are arbitrary given. For analysis, both single and superposed source traffic are modeled as NDPPs (non-deterministic periodic processes), and the ATM $$\mu$tiplexer is modeled as a U-state NDPPD/D/1/B queueing system. It is hown that the numerical results are very close to the si$$\mu$ation results. From the relationships between the starting tiem distributions and the corresponding $$\mu$tiplexer performances, some considerations for designing a scheduling policy in order to obtain the maxi$$\mu$$$\mu$tiplexing gain are presented.

In this paper, we propose a new interference cancellation(IC) receiver for multirate Multicarrier DS/CDMA(MC DS/CDMA) system based on orthogonal variable spreading factor(OVSF) code. The users are assigned different lengths of OVSF codes as a spreading code according to their data rates and the active users having same representative code split into a group for effective cancellation. The code grouping interference cancellation(IC) receiver performs cancellation between the groups first and cancellation within group. This proposed IC receiver can cancel the interferences using desired user's code information and then desired signals are detected. The results show that the large improvement in performance can be attained by group-wise IC scheme and we can make the effective systems compare to conventional ones. The bit error rate of the system is analytically derived in frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel and we also compare the system performance with that of multirate DS/CDMA system. We also analyze the performance of the proposed system with same bandwidth and processing gain. The results show the large improvement in performance that can be attained by cancellation scheme.
Recently, the web-based adaptive streaming service, DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP), is receiving more attention. However, existing network-based and buffer-based video quality control schemes in DASH environments make oscillation of segment throughput, causing degradation of the quality of experience (QoE) with frequent quality changes and playback interruptions because these schemes do not consider the content characteristics. In this paper, we propose a C-DASH (Content Characteristics based Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) scheme in order to improve the QoE in DASH environments. The C-DASH scheme performs seamless and smooth quality control based on the segment throughput, buffer status, and segment size of the content. Based on simulation results, it is confirmed that the C-DASH scheme can improve the QoE, when compared with the existing quality control schemes.
In this study, a new method of audio high-band coding based on autoencoder with side information is proposed. The proposed method operates in the MDCT domain, and improves the performance by using additional side information consisting of the previous and current low bands, which is different from the conventional autoencoder that only inputs information to be encoded. Moreover, the side information in a time-frequency domain enables the high-band coder to utilize temporal characteristics of the signal. In the proposed method, the encoder transmits a 4-dimensional latent vector computed by the autoencoder and a gain variable using 12 bits for each frame. The decoder reconstructs the high band by applying the decoded low bands in the previous and current frames and the transmitted information to the autoencoder. Subjective evaluation confirms that the proposed method provides equivalent performance to the SBR at approximately half the bit rate of the SBR.

In the general multiple video object coder, more interested objects such as speaker or moving object is consistently coded with higher priority. Since the priority of each object may not be fixed in the whole sequence and be variable on frame basis, it must be adjusted in a frame. In this paper, we analyze the independent rate control algorithm and global algorithm that the QP value is controled by the static parameters, object importance or priority, target PSNR, weighted distortion. The priority among static parameters is analyzed and adjusted into dynamic parameters according to the visual interests or importance obtained by camera interface. Target PSNR and weighted distortion are proportionally derived by using magnitude, motion, and distortion. We apply those parameters for the weighted distortion control and the priority-based control resulting in the efficient bit-rate distribution. As results of this paper, we achieved that fewer bits are allocated for video objects which has less importance and more bits for those which has higher visual importance. The duration of stability in the visual quality is reduced to less than 15 frames of the coded sequence. In the aspect of PSNR, the proposed scheme shows higher quality of more than 2d13 against the conventional schemes. Thus the coding scheme interfaced to human- eye proves an efficient video coder dealing with the multiple number of video objects.
