Most of today's energy supply is obtained from fossil fuels. Despite of high energy density, higher store efficiency and long mileage, fossil fuels cause environmental pollution and their reserves are limited. In this study pure hydrogen gas and oxygen gas are burned without the emission of pollution. A gas turbine is used to obtain power. Water is injected into a combustor, which prevents overheating and recovers cooling heat. Excessively supplied water is recirculated. With variation of mass flow rate and equivalence ratio, the affection of water injection rate and the temperature of injected water on efficiency and power are experimented. Injected water gets cooling heat, is expanded from liquid to vapor and raises the thermal efficiency. It is enable to determine the rate of water injection, which makes the maximum power. The increase of temperature of water injection raises the efficiency of the system.
Amidst the drive towards carbon neutrality, interest in renewable synthetic e-fuels is rising rapidly. These fuels, generated through the synthesis of atmospheric carbon and green hydrogen, offer a sustainable solution, showing advantages like high energy density and compatibility with existing infrastructure. The physical properties of e-fuels can be different from those of conventional gasoline based on manufacturing methods, which requires investigations into how the physical properties of e-fuels affect the fuel injection characteristics. This study performs a comparative analysis between conventional and Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthetic gasoline (e-gasoline) across various fuel temperatures, including the cold start condition. The fuel properties of F-T synthetic and conventional gasoline are analyzed using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique and the injection rates are measured using a Bosch-tube injection rate meter. The F-T synthetic gasoline exhibited higher density and kinematic viscosity, but lower vapor pressure compared to the conventional gasoline. Both fuels showed an increase in injection rate as the fuel temperature decreased. The F-T synthetic gasoline showed higher injection rates compared to conventional gasoline regardless of the fuel temperature.
The purpose of this research is to obtain the information of the development process of a vaporizing GDI spray using exciplex fluorecence method. Fluorobenzene/DEMA system was used as the exciplex-forming dopants. The 2-D spray images of liquid and vapor phases were acquired, and the behavior of both phases was analyzed by the image processing. The experiment was performed at the three different ambient perssures and the ambient temperature of 273K and 473K. As the result of this work, it was found that the development characteristics of GDI spray have stronger effect on the ambient pressure than on the ambient temperature. With an increase of ambient pressure, the distribution of vapor phase was decreased and the concentration of that was denser. Two regions, namely cone and mixing regions could be identified from those resulrs.
Vapor explosions can be classified in terms of modes of contact between the hot molten fuel and the coolant, since different contact modes may affect fuel-coolant mixing and subsequent vapor explosion energetics. It is generally accepted that most vapor explosion phenomena fall into three different modes of contact; fuel pouring into coolant, coolant injection into fuel and stratified fuel-coolant layers. In this study, we review previous stratified steam explosion experiments as well as recent experiments performed at the KTH in Sweden. While experiments with prototypic reactor materials are minimal, we do note that generally the energetics is limited for the stratified mode of contact. When the fuel mass involved in a steam explosion in a stratified geometry is compared to a pool geometry based on geometrical aspects, one can conclude that there is a very limited set of conditions (when melt jet diameter is small) under which a steam explosion is more energetic in a stratified geometry. However, under these limited conditions the absolute energetic explosion output would still be small because the total fuel mass involved would be limited.
The new 1.4 L turbocharged LPG direct injection (T-LPDI) engine is presented in this paper to improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicles installed with the 2.0 L LPG port fuel injection (LPI) engine, while maintaining the performance as a downsizing concept for the new engine platform development. Firstly, the return type high pressure LPG fuel supply system is designed and mounted in the new 1.4 L T-LPDI engine. As a result, this new engine shows a much better WOT performance and approximately 8 % of improved fuel economy level, as compared to the 2.0 L LPI vehicle. Secondly, the LPDI engine specific optimized design for high pressure fuel components and fuel injection control strategies are proposed and evaluated in order to overcome the restartability problem in a heat-soaked condition called the vapor lock phenomenon. Consequently, these experimental results illustrate a great potential for the developed 1.4 L T-LPDI engine as a possible substitute for the 2.0 L LPI engine.
Engine oil plays an important role in the mechanical lubrication and cooling of a vehicle engine. Recently, engine development has focused on the adoption of gasoline direct injection (GDI) and turbocharging methodology to achieve high-power and high-speed performance. However, oil dilution is a problem for GDI engines. Oil dilution occurs owing to high-pressure fuel injection into the combustion chamber when the engine is cold. The chemical components of engine oil are currently developed to accommodate gasoline fuel; however, bio-alcohol mixtures have become a recent trend in fuel development. Bio-alcohol fuels are alternatives to fossil fuels that can reduce vehicle emissions levels and greenhouse gas pollution. Therefore, the chemical components of engine oil should be improved to accommodate bio-alcohol fuels. This study employs a 2.0 L turbo-gas direct injection (T-GDI) engine in an experiment that dilutes oil with fuel. The experiment utilizes a variety of fuels, including sub-octane gasoline fuel (E0) and a bio-alcohol fuel mixture (Ethanol E3~E7). The results show that the lowest amount of oil dilution occurs when using E3 fuel. Analyzing the diluted engine oil by measuring density and moisture with respect to kinematic viscosity shows that the lowest values of these parameters occur when testing E3 fuel. The reason is confirmed to influence the vapor pressure of the low concentration bio-alcohol-fuel mixture.
Many countries are striving to reduce carbon emissions with the goal of net zero by 2050. Accordingly, vehicles are rapidly being electrified to reduce greenhouse gases in the transportation sector. However, many organizations predict that internal combustion engines of LDV (light-duty vehicle) will exist even in 2050, and it is difficult to electrify aircraft and large ships in a short time. Therefore, synthetic fuel (i.e., e-Fuel) that can reduce carbon emissions and replace existing fossil fuels is in the spotlight. The e-Fuel refers to a fuel synthesized by using carbon obtained through various carbon capture technologies and green hydrogen produced by eco-friendly renewable energy. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the injection and spray characteristics of the simulated e-Gasoline. We mixed the hydrocarbon fuel components according to the composition ratio of the synthetic fuel produced based on the FT(Fischer-Tropsch) process. As a result of injection rate measurement, simulated e-Gasoline showed no significant difference in injection delay and injection period compared to standard gasoline. However, due to the low vapor pressure of the simulated e-Gasoline, the spray tip penetration (STP) was lower, and the size of spray droplets was larger than that of traditional gasoline.
The main purpose of this study is enhancing the filtering efficiency, performance and durability of filter by growing SiC whiskers on cordierite honeycomb substrate. The experiment was performed by Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI) in order to control pore morphology of substrate. Increasing the mechanical strength of porous substrate is one of important issues. The formation of "networking structure" in the pore of porous substrate increased mechanical strength. The high pressure gas injection to the specimen showed that a little of whiskers were separated from substrate but additional film coating enhanced the stability of whisker at high pressure gas injection. Particle trap test was performed. More nano-particle was trapped by whisker growth at the pore of substrate. Therefore it is expected that the porous cordierite which deposited the SiC whisker will be the promising material for the application as filter trapping the nano-particles.
The carbon-based films have various properties, which have been widely applied in industrial application. However, it has critical drawback for poor adhesion between films and metal substrate. In the present work, we have deposited carbon-based films on injection mold steel by plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD). In order to improve adhesion, prior to film deposition, the substrate was nitriding-treated using PACVD. And its effect on the adhesion was investigated. Due to the pre-nitriding, the amorphous carbon nitride (a-CN:H) films presented 10 times higher adhesion (34.9 N) than that of un-nitirided. In addition, a friction coefficient was decreased from 0.29 to 0.15 for the amorphous carbon (a-C:H) due to improved adhesion. The obtained results demonstrated that pre-nitriding considerably improved the adhesion, and the relationship among adhesion, hardness, and surface roughness was discussed in detail.
