In this paper, design optimization for mixed-flow pump impellers and diffusers has been studied using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code and DOE (design of experiments). We also discussed how to improve the performance of the mixed-flow pump by designing the impeller and diffuser. Geometric design variables were defined by the vane plane development, which indicates the blade-angle distributions and length of the impeller and diffusers. The vane plane development was controlled using the blade-angle in a fixed meridional shape. First, the design optimization of the defined impeller geometric variables was achieved, and then the flow characteristics were analyzed in the point of incidence angle at the diffuser leading edge for the optimized impeller. Next, design optimizations of the defined diffuser shape variables were performed. The importance of the geometric design variables was analyzed using $2^k$ factorial designs, and the design optimization of the geometric variables was determined using the response surface method (RSM). The objective functions were defined as the total head and the total efficiency at the design flow rate. Based on the comparison of CFD results between the optimized pump and base design models, the reason for the performance improvement was discussed.

Large quantity of extra soils discharged from excavation site in Songdo area can be treated by hardening agents and utilized in surface stabilized layer overlying thick reclaimed soft soil deposit. Though surface layer stabilization method using cement or lime for very soft soils has been studied in recent years, but studies on moderately soft clayey silt has not been tried. The purpose of this research is to investigate optimum mixing condition for stabilizing Songdo marine soil with low plasiticity. The optimum mixing conditions of hardening agents with Songdo soil such as kind of agents, mixing ratio, initial water content and curing time are investigated by uniaxial compression test and laboratory vane test. The results indicate that strength increases with high mixing ratio and long curing time, while decreases drastically under certain water content before mixing. Finally, optimum mixing condition considering economic efficiency and workability with test results was proposed.

This paper describes the characteristics of the unsteady pressure on the stator surface induced by rotor viscous wakes. The primary object of this study is to investigate the effects of axial spacing between the rotor and the stator and three-dimensional vane geometries such as stator sweep and stator lean on the unsteady pressure fluctuations on the stator vane. To predict these fluctuations, unsteady three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analyses are performed. Furthermore, a three-dimensional analytical method using unsteady lifting-surface theory is also used to elucidate the mechanism of interaction of passing rotor wakes with downstream stator. Five different fan configurations with three sets of stator geometries, which are three radial stator configurations with different axial spacing, the swept stator and the swept and leaned stator, are used for this study. It is found that, in axial spacing between rotor and stator, the effect of radial phase skew of incoming rotor wake is important for the reduction of the induced unsteady pressure in addition to the rotor wake decay. It is also shown that incorporation of stator sweep and lean is effective to reduce this unsteady pressure.
Undrained shear strength is estimated from laboratory tests generally, but the very soft or fluid material is generally incompatible with the test setup. In-situ methods require test to be accomplished at discrete time intervals, which does not provide a method to predict strength increment as a function of time for an ongoing project. Therefore, correlation between slump test value and undrained shear strength was derived through the regression analysis of slump test and laboratory vane shear test results. For the reliability of derived correlation equation statistical analysis using the t-distribution was performed and the comparison between the results of in-situ test and laboratory experiments demonstrated the applicability of the derived correlation.

It is important to estimate the mechanical properties of clay since it is directly related to the design and the construction of geotechnical structures. Site exploration, which is composed of boring, sampling, in-situ, or laboratory tests, is preformed to estimate the mechanical properties. However, mechanical properties of clay measured from laboratory test may be different from in-situ properties due to disturbances occurred during sampling, transportation, storage, and trimming. In this study, the degree of disturbance according to sampling method was estimated with the test results of CK/sub o/U triaxial compression test on Yangsan clay. The soil samples were obtained by three types of sampling method, j.e., 76mm-tube sampler, 76mm-piston sampler, and block sampler. In order to evaluate the quality of samples, volumetric strain, undrained shear strength, secant Young's modulus, and pore pressure coefficient at peak measured from each sample were compared with one another. From the test results, it was observed that mechanical properties of the block and piston samples were more reliable than those of tube samples. But it was observed that the water content of piston was similar to that of tube samples at given depths while the water content of block samples was 14.3∼15.8% smaller than that of piston and tube samples. In addition to the evaluation of the quality of samples, relationship between c/sub u// σ/sub vc/'and OCR was established from the results of the CK/sub o/U triaxial compression tests, which were carried out using SHANSEP method. And also undrained shear strength was analyzed using the in-situ test data such as Cone Penetration Test(CPT), Dilatometer Test(DMT), and Field Vane Test(FVT) and was compared with that evaluated from CK/sub o/U triaxial compression test.
The cone pressuremeter test (CPM) is a new in-situ test which combines a standard cone penetration test with a pressuremeter. The cone pressuremeter tests in clay are presented and analyzed. An analytical solution of CPM incorporated non-linear soil behavior with no volume change is presented, and curve fitting technique is proposed to make use of both the loading and unloading portions of the pressuremeter test. The proposed method is accomplished by putting greater emphasis on the unloading portion. Twenty CPM tests are analyzed using the proposed method, and the derived undrained shear strength of soil is compared with other tests such as field vane tests and laboratory tests. The interpreted soil parameters had resonable values when compared to other in-situ and laboratory test results. The cone pressuremeter has provided reliable measures of undrained shear strength using curve fitting method.

In this work, a modified stage-stacking method for the performance prediction of multi-stage axial flow compressors is proposed. The method is based on a simultaneous calculation of all interstage variables (temperature, pressure, flow velocity) instead of the conventional sequential stage-by-stage scheme. The method is also very useful in simulating the effect of changing angles of the inlet guide vane and stator vanes on the compressor operating characteristics. Generalized stage performance curves are used in presenting the performance characteristics of each stage. General assumptions enable determination of flow path data and stage design performance. Performance of various real compressors is predicted and comparison between prediction and field data validates the usefulness of the present method.
Spacer grid with mixing vane had been widely used in nuclear reactor core. One of the main feather of spacer grid with mixing vane was that strong swirl flow was formed after the spacer grid. The swirl flow not only changed the bubble generation in the near wall field, but also affected the bubble behaviors in the center region of the subchannel. The interaction between bubble and the swirl flow was one of the basic phenomena for the two phase flow modeling in fuel assembly. To obatin better understanding on the bubble behaviors in swirl flow, full three dimension numerical simulations were conducted in the present paper. The swirl flow was assumed in the cylindral calculation domain. The bubble interface was captured by Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method. The properties of saturated water and steam at different pressure were applied in the simulation. The bubble trajectory, motion, shape and force were obtained based on the bubble parameters captured by VOF. The simulation cases in the present study included single bubble with different size, at different angular velocity conditions and at different pressure conditions. The results indicated that bubble migrated to the center in swirl flow with spiral motion type. The lateral migration was mainly related to shear stress magnitude and bubble size. The bubble moved toward the center with high velocity when the swirl magnitude was high. The largest bubble had the highest lateral migration velocity in the present study range. The effect of pressure was small when bubble size was the same. The prelimenery simulation result would be beneficial for better understanding complex two phase flow phenomena in fuel assembly with spacer grid.
A dynamic model of turbo compressor having helical gear pairs is developed. The model accounts for the shaft and bearing flexibilities, gyroscopic effects and the force couplings among the transverse, torsion. and axial motions due to gearings. For the mode analysis of turbo compressor, a transfer matrix method is used. The excitation sources caused by the mass unbalances of the rotors and misalignment of the shafts, the transmitted errors of the gearings. and the vane passing frequencies of the Impeller are studied qualitatively. By introducing the perturbation method, the generated forcing frequencies are defined and devided into three groups. With the field data, two critical speeds are analytically found and the corresponding modal characteristics are examined.

The flow analysis method which had been developed for the numerical calculation of 3-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent flow within an axial compressor was extended to the flow field within centrifugal impeller. In this method based on the SIMPLE(Semi Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations) algorithm, the coordinate transformation was adopted and the standard k-.epsilon. model using wall function was used for turbulent flow analysis. The calculated flow fields have agreed very well with measurement results. Especially, 3-dimensional and viscous flow characteristics including secondary flows, jet-wake flow and decreased pressure rise along impeller passage, which can't be predicted by inviscid Q3D calculation were predicted very reasonably.
