  • The selective catalytic experiments using both sulfated/sulfur-free titania and V2O5/TiO2 catalysts have been conducted for NO reduction by NH3 in a packed-bed, down-flow reactor. The sulfated and vanadia loaded titania exhibited higher activity for NO removal than the sulfur-free catalysts, where > 90% NO removal was achieved over the sulfated V2O5/TiO2 catalyst between 280∼500 C. The surface structure of vanadia species on the catalyst surface played a critical role in the high performance of catalysts in which the existence of monomeric/polymeric vanadate is revealed by Raman spectra studies. Water vapor and SO2 were added to the reacting system for the catalyst deactivation tests. At higher temperatures (T ≥ 350 C), little deactivation was observed over the sulfated V2O5/TiO2 catalysts, showing good durability against SO2 and water vapor, which is compared with deactivation at lower temperatures.

  • The activity of domestic pigment titania$(TiO_2)$ impregnated with vanadia$(V_2O_5)$ was investigated in the laboratory microreactor. The meta-titanic acid$(TiO(OH)_2)$ which was produced at Hankook Titanium was selected as the precursor for support. The domestic pigment $TiO_2$ showed higher activity in the reduction of NO with $NH_3$ than the foreign commercial $TiO_2$. $WO_3$ were added to domestic $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalytic system to improve the catalytic activity at higher reaction temperature between 400~50$0^{\circ}C$ Also, the deactivation of domestic $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ and $WO_3-V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalyst by $SO_2$ and $H_2O$ was investigated.

  • Platinum catalysts were prepared by impregnating platinum precursor on titania-, vanadia-, zirconia- and ceria-incorporated silicas followed by hydrogen peroxide treatment. The effects of the oxide incorporation and the hydrogen peroxide treatment in the preparation of the platinum catalysts on their platinum dispersion and catalytic activity in carbon monoxide oxidation were investigated. XRD, TEM, EXAFS, XPS and carbon monoxide chemisorption studies confirmed the high dispersion of platinum even on silica by the oxide incorporation and hydrogen peroxide treatment. However, the type of oxides incorporated on silica caused considerable variances in the adsorption and the catalytic activity in the oxidation of carbon monoxide on them. The incorporation of titania, zirconia and ceria on silica and further hydrogen peroxide treatment enhanced the platinum dispersion, resulting in the improved catalytic activities. Among the catalysts supported on the oxide-incorporated silicas, the platinum catalyst supported on zirconia-incorporated silica exhibited the highest activity because of the highest platinum dispersion due to the formation of Pt-O-Zr bonds.

  • Catalytic activities of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalyst were investigated under reaction conditions such as reaction temperature, catalyst size, inlet concentration and space velocity. A 1,2-dichlorobenzene(1,2-DCB) concentrations were measured in front and after of the heated $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalyst bed, and conversion efficiency of 1,2-DCB was determined from it's concentration difference. The conversion of 1,2-DCB using a pellet type catalyst in the bench-scale reactor was lower than that with the powder type used in the micro flow-scale reactor. However, when the pellet size was halved, the conversion was similar to that with the powder type catalyst. The highest conversion was shown with an inlet concentration of 100 ppmv, but when the concentration was higher or lower than 100 ppmv, the conversion was found to decrease. Complete conversion was obtained when the GHSV was maintained at below 10,000 $h^{-1}$, even at the relatively low temperature of $250^{\circ}C$. Water vapor inhibited the conversion of 1,2-DCB, which was suspected to be due to the competitive adsorption between the reactant and water for active sites.

  • NOx from the thermal power plants are NO and $NO_2$. This work investigated the chemical/physical characteristics and SCR efficiency of newly prepared catalysts including tungsten ($WO_3$), molybdenum ($MoO_3$) and antimony ($SbO_3$) based on vanadia($V_2O_5$) over titania($TiO_2$). As a result of the examination, the surface area of the catalysts promoted with additional metals was larger and the de-NOx efficiency also was enhanced with temperature. The most efficient catalytst was $V_2O_5/TiO_2-WO_3$(10%) at $200^{\circ}C$. Such a high efficiency could contribute to reduce the ammonia slip.

  • Selective catalytic reduction of $NO_x$ by $NH_3$ ($NH_3$-SCR) over $V_2O_5/TiO_2$-based catalysts is recently reported to be an anthropogenic emitter of $N_2O$ that is a global warming gas with a global warming potential of 310. Therefore, this review will get a touch on significance of some parameters regarding $N_2O$ formation in the $deNO_xing$ reaction for fossil fuels-fired power plants applications. The $N_2O$ production in $NH_3$-SCR reaction with such catalysts occurs via side reactions between $NO_x$ and $NH_3$ in addition to $NH_3$ oxidation, and the extent of these undesired reactions depends strongly on the loadings of $V_2O_5$ as a primary active component and the promoter as a secondary one ($WO_3$ and $MoO_3$) in the SCR catalysts, the feed and operating variables such as reaction temperature, $NO_2/NO_x$ ratio, oxygen concentration, gas hourly space velocity, water content and thermal excursion, and the physical and chemical histories of the catalysts on site. Although all these parameters are associated with the $N_2O$ formation in $deNO_xing$ reaction, details of some of them have been discussed and a better way of suppressing the $N_2O$ production in commercial SCR plants has been proposed.

  • A series of $V_{2}O_{5}-TiO_2$ xerogel catalysts were prepared by nonhydrolytic sol-gel method and analysed by various characterization techniques. These catalysts showed much higher surface areas and total pore volumes than conventional V$V_{2}O_{5}-TiO_2$ xerogel and impregnated $V_{2}O_{5}/TiO_2$ catalysts. It was found that the textural property of $V_{2}O_{5}-TiO_2$ material varies with the method and conditions of synthesis. Surface vanadates and $TiO_2$ anatase phase are the crucial factors to obtain high catalytic activities. The selective oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in the presence of excess water and ammonia was studied over these catalysts. Xerogel catalysts prepared by non-hydrolytic sol-gel method showed very high conversion of $H_{2}S$ without harmful emission of $SO_2$. The highest catalytic activity shown by these $V_{2}O_{5}-TiO_2$ catalysts may be due to their high surface area and good dispersion of vanadia species in the titania matrix.
