In this paper, the FEM result has been presented for a sealing safety between a valve packing and a valve seat during a open and close operation in a LPG cylinder. The sealing operation of a LPG valve is completed when the valve packing in which is made by a nylon-66 polymer is to stop a LP gas flow, which flows out from the outlet of a brass pipe in a LPG cylinder. The contact sealing mechanism of the valve may be classified by a flat contact of an unused valve packing and a circular groove contact of an used valve packing in a current LPG valve. Based on the FEM and experimental investigations the sealing force, 4.9 MPa for a flat contact mode of the unused valve packing is a little high compared to that of the used valve packing, which shows a circular groove contact geometry against a valve seat. But these sealing pressures for two contact modes are very low compared to the ultimate strenath 83 MPa of the nylon-66 and this may be designed with a excess strength of the valve.

Vibration has been severly increased at the branch pipe of main steam header since the commercial operation of a nuclear power plant. Intense broad band disturbance flow at the discontinuous region such as elbow, valve or heather generates the acoustical pulsation which is propagated through the piping system. The pulsation becomes the source of low frequency vibration at piping system. If it coincide with natural frequency of the pipe system, excessive vibration is made. High level vibration due to the pressure pulsation related to high dynamic stress, and ultimately, to failure probability affects fatally the reliability and confidence of plant piping system. This paper discusses vibration effect for the branch pipe system due to acoustical pulsations by broad band disturbance flow at the large main steam header in 7nn nuclear power plant. The exciting sources and response or the piping system are investigated by using on site measurements and analytical approaches. It is identified that excessive vibration is caused by acoustical pulsations of 1.3Hz, 4.4Hz and 6.6Hz transferred from main steam header, which are coincided with fundamental natural frequencies of the piping structure. The energy absorbing restraints with additional stiffness were installed to reduce excessive vibration.

Two different types of algorithms were developed and applied to detect the partial faults of a multi-type air conditioning system. Partial faults include the compressor valve leakage, the refrigerant pipe partial blockage, the condenser fouling, and the evaporator fouling. The first algorithm was developed by using mathematical models and parity relations, and the second algorithm was developed by using mathematical models and a RBF neural network. Test results showed that the second algorithm was better than the first algorithm in detecting various partial faults of the system. Therefore, the algorithm developed by using mathematical models and a RBF neural network may be used for the detection of partial faults of an air-conditioning system.

We herein propose a systematic design method of hydraulic pipes used in heavy construction equipment. We found that even though many design studies have been conducted regarding major hydraulic components such as pumps, cylinders, and control valves, studies regarding the optimal design of hydraulic pipes are scarce. In this study, the design of four types of pipes is considered: two high-pressure and two low-pressure pipes. First, fluid flow analysis was conducted based on oil flow and pressure for various radii of curvature. For a check-valve pipe, we considered the location of an inlet pipe. We could visualize fluid flow inside the pipe according to the flow velocity and pressure distribution. Based on fluid flow analysis, we conducted a structural analysis that revealed the stress distribution and concentration for each pipe design. We selected the best design parameters for each pipe design, fabricated the pipes, and subsequently tested them for validity.
To evaluate the pipe failure impact, current methodologies consider only a broken pipe as the impacted area. However, these approaches are accurate if the broken pipe is the only area isolated from tile system. Depending on the number and locations of on-off valves, more pipes which are adjacent to a broken pipe may be isolated. Using the concept of Segment suggested by Walski, the methodology evaluating the pipe failure impact incorporated with on-off valve locations has been suggested by Jun. However, a segment cannot account for all possible pipe failure impacted areas since it does not consider additional failures, namely the network topological failure and the hydraulic pressure failure. For this reason, a methodology which can consider the network topology and hydraulic pressure limitation as well as on-off valve locations is suggested. The suggested methodology is applied to a real network to verify its applicability As results, it is found that a single pipe failure can affect huge areas depending on the configuration of on-off valves and the network topology. Thus, the applicability of the suggested methodology for evaluating the pipe failure impacts on a water distribution network is proved.
This paper is an experimental study on the freezing protection valve used for solar water heating, air-conditioning systems, and plumbing systems. When the phase change occurs from liquid to solid, most of the substances except water volumetrically shrink. And referred to as PCM(Phase Change Material) a substance with such properties, the phase change temperature varies depending on the material. To prevent the freezing of the plumbing system, such as air-conditioning system in the winter season, we developed a several types of freezing protection valve using PCM whose freezing temperature are $2-4^{\circ}C$. The working principle of the freezing protection valve is that the fluid inside the pipe is released to prevent the system-collapse when fluid temperature reaches the freezing temperature of the PCM. And then the valve is closed and returned to the original position automatically when the temperature of the operating fluid rises. In this paper, the operating temperatures, discharge flow rate and the response characteristics of the valve during the operation are tested and investigated. From the results of this research the freezing protection valves employing PCM are expected to be commercialized in the near future.

The manifold designates a pipe system discharging or absorbing water through multiple holes installed along the finite length of the pipe. The proper design of the manifold requires the pre-analysis of the hydraulic characteristics such as system head and flow rate. head loss and hole discharges, etc. On the contrary to the general pipe systems. the head loss along the pipe is hardly quantified in an explicit way since it is complicately varied by the size and arrangement of the holes. In the present study, both energy and continuity equations are employed to analyze the hydraulic characteristics, constituting nonlinear simultaneous equations which are solved by Newton method. In addition, a hydraulic experiment utilizing the manifold system equipped with an automatically controlled valve is performed to reproduce model tide. The result shows that the manifold system can be effectively used in a tidal basin where water flow should be maintained uniformly over the basin width.
The waterhammer has recently become more important because the pumping stations were big and the systems conveying the fluid through the large and long transmission pipelines were complex. When the pumps are started or stopped for the operation or tripped due to the power failure, the hydraulic transients occur as a result of the sudden change in velocity As the pressure waves are propagating between the pumping station and the distributing reservoir, the pressure inside the pipe drops to the liquid vapor pressure with the pipeline profile, at which time a vapor cavity forms, and finally the column separation occurs. If the pressure in the pipe is less than the atmospheric pressure, the pipe can be collapsed and destroyed after the water columns separated by the vapor cavity rejoin. During the reverse flow, the pressure is so abnormally increased at the pumping station that the accident of flooding may happen due to the failure of system. In this paper, the field tests on the waterhammer by the startup, stoppage, and power failure of a centrifugal pump were carried out for Yongma transmission pumping station in Seoul. The experimental results were compared with that of the numerical calculations, in which results the procedure of controlled pump normal shut-down and the two-step closing mode of controlling the ball valve for pump emergency stop are proposed to reduce the pressure surge.

This study is to investigate the pressure wave characteristics and the maximum pressure rise generated by instantaneous valve closure at the end of the straightening polybutylene piping system. Experiments were conducted under the following conditions: initial pressure $1\~5$ bar, flow velocity $\~0.5-3.0m/s$ and water temperature $25^{\circ}C$. Results indicated that the peak pressure generated by quick valve closure reached Joukowsky's value. We also found that the maximum pressure rise and the pressure history depended on not only initial steady pressure but also flow velocity.
