  • A dynamic model has been developed to simulate dynamic operation of a real double-effect absorption chiller. Dynamic behavior of working fluids in main components was modeled in first-order nonlinear differential equations based on heat and mass balances. Mass transport mechanisms among the main components were modeled by valve throttling, 'U' tube overflow and solution sub-cooling. The nonlinear dynamic equations coupled with the subroutines to calculate thermodynamic properties of working fluids were solved by a numerical method. The dynamic performance of the model was compared with the test data of a commercial medium chiller. The model showed a good agreement with the test data except for the first 5,000 seconds during which different flow rates of the weak solution caused some discrepancy. It was found that the chiller dynamics is governed by the inlet temperatures of the cooling water and the chilled water when the heat input to the chiller is relatively constant.

  • Boundary layer ingestion in airframe-integrated scramjet engines causes engine stall (“engine un start” hereafter) and restricts engine performance. To improve the unstart characteristics in engines, boundary layer bleed and a two-staged injection of fuel were examined in Mach 4 and Mach 6 engine tests. A boundary layer bleed system consisting of a porous plate, an air coolers, a metering orifice and an ON/OFF valve, was designed for each of the engines. First, a method to determine bleed rate requirements was developed. Porous plates were designed to suck air out of the Mach 4 engine at a rate of 200 g/s and out of the Mach 6 engine at a rate of 30 g/s. Air coolers were then optimized based on the bleed airflow rates. The exhaust air temperature could be cooled below 600 K in the porous plates and the compact air coolers. The Mach 4 engine tests showed that a small bleed rate of 3% doubled the engine operating range and thrust. With the assistance of two-staged fuel injection of H2, the engine operating range was extended to Ф0.95 and the maximum thrust was tripled to 2560 N. The Mach 6 tests showed that a bleed of 30 g/s (0.6% of captured air in the engine) extended the start limit from Ф0.48 to Ф1 to deliver a maximum thrust of 2460 N.

  • The fluid system such as, the quantity control of raw water, chemicals control in the purification, the waste water system as well as in the feed water or circulation system of the power plant and the ventilation system is controlled with the valve and moter pump. The system's performance and the energy saving of the fluid systems depend on control of method and delicacy. Until, PI controller use in these system but it cannot control delicately because of the coupling in the system loop. In this paper we configure a single flow system to the multi variable system and suggest the application of 2-DOF PID controller and the tuning methods by the neural network to the electrical power of the flow control system. the 2-DOF controller follows to a setpoint has a robustness against the disturbance in the results of simulation. • Unburned hydrocarbon (UBHC) emissions from gasoline engines remain a primary engineering research and development concern due to stricter emission regulations. Gasoline engines produce more UBHC emissions during cold start and warm-up than during any other stage of operation, because of insufficient fuel-air mixing, particularly in view of the additional fuel enrichment used for early starting. Impingement of fuel droplets on the cylinder wall is a major source of UBHC and a concern for oil dilution. This paper describes an experimental study that was carried out to investigate the distribution and 'footprint' of fuel droplets impinging on the cylinder wall during the intake stroke under engine starting conditions. Injectors having different targeting and atomization characteristics were used in a 4-Valve engine with optical access to the intake port and combustion chamber. The spray and targeting performance were characterized using high-speed visualization and Phase Doppler Interferometry techniques. The fuel droplets impinging on the port, cylinder wall and piston top were characterized using a color imaging technique during simulated engine start-up from room temperature. Highly absorbent filter paper was placed around the circumference of the cylinder liner and on the piston top to collect fuel droplets during the intake strokes. A small amount of colored dye, which dissolves completely in gasoline, was used as the tracer. Color density on the paper, which is correlated with the amount of fuel deposited and its distribution on the cylinder wall, was measured using image analysis. The results show that by comparing the locations of the wetted footprints and their color intensities, the influence of fuel injection and engine conditions can be qualitatively and quantitatively examined. Fast FID measurements of UBHC were also performed on the engine for correlation to the mixture formation results.

  • Pneumatic actuators are widely used in a variety of hazardous working environments. Any process that involves pneumatic actuation is also recognized as "eco-friendly". In most cases, applications of pneumatic actuators require only point-to-point control. In recent years, research efforts have been directed toward achieving precise position tracking control. In this study, a tracking position control method is proposed and experimentally evaluated for a linear positioning system. The positioning system is composed of a pneumatic actuator and a 3-port proportional valve. The proposed controller has an inner pressure control loop and an outer position control loop. A PID controller with feedback linearization is used in the pressure control loop to nullify the nonlinearity arising from the compressibility of the air. The position controller is also a PID controller augmented with the friction compensation by a neural network. Experimental results indicate that the proposed controller significantly improves the tracking performance.rformance.

  • This paper presents the experimental results on the oil leakage characteristics of stem seals depending on the driving distance in LPG vehicle. The increased speeds of the camshaft and oil temperatures do not affect to the oil leakage of the seals because of the low level of driving distances less than 40,000 km. But the increased driving distance over 50,000 km to 100,000 km shows a rapid deteriorating the sealing performance, which may increase the oil leakage through the rubbing surfaces between the poppet valves and stem seals. In this result, the stem seal may be exchanged about the driving distance of 50,000 km to 60,000 km with a currently used stem seal in LPG car. Thus, the stem seal for a poppet valve should be resigned for the increased durability and long life.

  • A hydrodynamic separator using natural free energy provided by bridge was operated for the treatment of stormwater runoff. The separator was automatically controlled by using electronic valve which is connected with pressure meter. Normally the separator was opened during dry days, but it was closed after the capture of first flush. The results indicated that the average pressure and the flow rate were directly affected by the rainfall intensity. The pressure was more than 3 meters as the rainfall intensity was above 5 mm/hr. The percent volume of underflow decreased as the pressure and flow rate increased, but the percent volume of overflow showed an opposite behavior. The concentration of total suspended solids (TSS) in underflow increased as a function of increasing pressure while it decreased in overflow. The TSS separation efficiency was evaluated based on mass balance. It ranged from 30% to 90% with the pressure ranging from 2 to 10 meters, and it was proportional to pressure and flow rate. The analysis of water balance indicated that around 13% of total runoff was captured by the separator as a first flush, and this runoff was separated as underflow and overflow with the respective percent volume of 29% and 71%. The pollutants budget was also examined based on mass balance. The results showed that the percent of TSS, $COD_{cr}$, TN and TP in underflow were 73%, 59%, 7.6% and 49%, respectively.

  • In this study, a cryogenic vessel was constructed to maintain and control the safe pressure of liquid hydrogen boil-off gas (BOG), and the numerical analysis was conducted on the development of computational fluid dynamics model inside the high-pressure vessel. An evaluation system was constructed using cryogenic inner and outer containers, pre-cooler, upper flange, and internal high-pressure container. We attempted to analyze the performance of the safety valve by injecting relatively high temperature hydrogen gas to generate BOG gas and quickly control the pressure of the high-pressure vessel up to 10 bar. As a results, the liquid volume fraction decreased with a rapid evaporation, and the pressure distribution increased monotonically inside a high pressure vessel. Additionally, it was found that the time to reach 10 bar was greatly affected by the filling rate of liquid hydrogen.

  • An animal experiment was designed for the evaluation of in vivo performance of the newly developed electrohydraulic type ventricular assist device and its influence on the left ventricular function during pal- satile left ventricular assist. Eight adult sheep were incorporated into the study and data were collected from seven sheep. Total as- sist time ranged from 69 minutes to 7 days. The performance of the device was satisfactory both in asyn- chr nous and synchronous mode within the range of given native heart rate. More than 4 liters of device output could be reached within the range of normal left atral pressure without development of negative pressure in the left atrium. Moderate to severe degree of hemolysis was noted as evidenced by significant increase of plasma free hemoglobin level after 3 days of left ventricular support along with the presence of the small amount of thrombi around the floating disc type polymer valve apparatus reflecting that further study and refinement of the device need to be done in regard of biocompatibility and thromboresistance. The hemodynamics showed increase in heart rate (p < 0.05), cardiac output and left ventricular minute work (p < 0.05) after placement of the device at the flow rate of 2.0∼2.5 Llmin. The left atrial pressure, left ventricular pressure and LV dpldt were decreased after the device placement(p < 0.05). The endocardial viability ratio and oxygen contents of the mixed ven us blood and coronary venous blood were all increased (p < 0.05) after the device placement suggesting effective unloading of the left ventricle was accomplished. The myocardial perfusion was thought improved in synchronous counterpulsation as suggested by sig- nificant increase in endocardial viability ratio and coronary venous blood oxygen content in synchronous assist mode comparing with asynchronous mode.
